Currently, the image is the result of an evolutionary process and rebuilding it from zero was not possible. This maes it possible to audit the whole build process, create different base image for various purposes (very small, headless with no UI objects at all, using the object engine in a completely different way that is used today). That makes the image the result of a fully reproducible process, from a file of zero bytes, to a file with a working image. That would make us master the whole chain. Today, there is still black magic in the image, due to the history. That's an exciting development. For example, in C, one compiles all files, and links, giving the exe. All that from a file of zero size. We will be able to do the same kind of thing at the image level. Also, this allows to experiment with new low level mechanisms. This is currently not possible since it makes us like performing surgery on our own brain. Also, the Oz-inspired system will help in exploring other image memories (small or large) and manipulate them as entities. At this point, this is also not common pratice. Ready to play guinea pig for UI improvements
by stepharo Jan. 22, 2016

Jan. 22, 2016

Hi guys Many of you may bthink that I'm mad or whatever about new UI elements. Sometimes this is true :) but most of the time not. I'm just going straight and (harsh) comments. So what I propose to the GT team is the following: I'm ready to be a guinea pig Each time they want I will record a screenflow of my interaction or perception about new/different tools. I will follow a UI debugging process an expert proposed: talking aloud about my hypotheses while interacting and discovering the tools. I play that in the past with other people and it works well. I encourage other people to do the same to give feeback to GT team. Stef

[ann] spotter processors as settings
by Tudor Girba Jan. 22, 2016

Jan. 22, 2016

Hi, We now have a new little feature in Spotter. Take a look: Basically, you will get a setting for each processor defined in the image. This happens dynamically. If you disable the setting, the processor will not be available anymore. Please give this a try and let us know what you think. We would also like a code review related to the way we deal with dynamic settings. Right now, the magic is done in GTSpotterExtensionSettings (this is real magic - read the class comment), but the current solution relies on a doesNotUnderstand: to maintain the list of disabled processors. I would more prefer it if we could create a DynamicSettingDeclaration that would be able to pass arguments to one central selector. Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com www.feenk.com "Quality cannot be an afterthought."

This is a much more complex and challenging subject that you might think. There has been a lot of work done on this for many years, many approaches have been tried. I am pretty sure that the people behind the Pharo Bootstrap project are aware of the existing literature. > On 21 Jan 2016, at 09:49, Peter H.
