New debugger in pharo 5
by Norbert Hartl Feb. 15, 2016

Feb. 15, 2016

I'm using pharo 5 for the first time and I have trouble getting used to the new debugger there. I think that actions like proceeding, stepping into, over⦠etc. are important functionalities of a debugger. So it is not a good idea to move them to the upper right of the window and make them not to look like buttons. To me it is to make central functionality inaccessible. On the other hand I find the "Source" tab superfluous. Is this space supposed to be covered with more tabs then just the source? The Variables tab in the lower left: Is the "Type" information the most important? Not to me. If I look at the tab I want to find the name of a variable I expect there to be. So the Variable should be this first column, then Value and finally Type. This would also solve the UI issue that the Type label with strings of different size make a bad appearance when scrolling. It is hard to focus on the names of the Variable because the Type label having a dark background is catching attention. What needs some time to adjust but I like is to have the same behaviour as in the inspector in the bottom row starting from the actual execution context. my 2 cents, Norbert

Spec Experience in Need for Feedback :)
by stepharo Feb. 14, 2016

Feb. 14, 2016

Hi guys I should say that I'm sick (gift from my little boy) so may be this is obvious. I'm looking at the code of Spec and I hate this code :) widgetDo: aBlock ^ self widget ifNotNil: aBlock I do not see why widgetDo: has to test for nil So I transformed widgetDo: aBlock ^ self widget ifNotNil: aBlock into widgetDo: aBlock ^ aBlock cull: self widget BTW I hate all the cull: call. They are connected with sloppiness). It is far too easy to use cull: I do not know how many arguments, I do not care I use cull: cull: is slow slow and help producing messing API. And it broke. The methodBrowser example did not work anymore and many others. Debugger felt down.... I feel sad. Now my brain is dead so I cannot concentrate more. Stef

missing cairo library in CI
by Peter Uhnák Feb. 14, 2016

Feb. 14, 2016

Hi all, not sure if this is best directed at pharo or CI mailing list... I've created a new job in pharo-contribution and my Pharo project uses Cairo library... however when CI ran the tests it failed on "Cannot locate cairo library. Please check if it installed on your system" ( https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/DynaCASE/2/PHARO=40,VERSION=deve… ) is it something I need to enable or disable somewhere? I'm pretty sure Athens also uses Cairo ( https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/Athens/) and it works just fine. Any pointers appreciated, Peter

Termination semaphore for Process
by Max Leske Feb. 13, 2016

Feb. 13, 2016

Hi all, I have a proposal and Iâd like to hear your opinion. Right now, when I want to wait for a process to finish I use something like #forkAndWait or I write a block with semaphores myself. This works fine for processes that I spawn and then immediately want to wait for. But what if I spawn a process somewhere else and only later know that I want to wait for its termination? Currently I would construct a polling loop to do that. Hereâs a different idea (which Iâve tested): 1. add instance variable âterminationSemaphoreâ to Process 2. at the end of Process>>terminate #ensure: that all waiting processes are signaled 3. add #waitForTermination message to Process: waitForTermination terminationSemaphore ifNil: [ terminationSemaphore := Semaphore new ]. self resume. terminationSemaphore wait This enables code like the following: result := 0. p := [ result := 2. 2 seconds asDelay wait ] newProcess priority: 20; yourself. âdonât run the new process yet" [ p waitForTermination. result2 := 3. ] forkAt: 30. âp is now running, the second process is waiting" p waitForTermination. âp is still running, two processes are waitingâ âbecause processes waiting on a semaphore are signaled in the order they sent #wait we even achieve ordering (at least with equal process priorities) and so âresult2â is not nil but 3â {result. result2} â#(2 3) I wrote this in 10 minutes, so thereâs room for polishing. I just want to know if this is something other people might want and if there are potential problems with process termination and semaphores which I am not aware of. Cheers, Max
