Shortcuts conflicts

Hi, I am the only one to find this screen weird? https://puu.sh/qSyo9/baa12ac902.png It's pretty annoying when I am debugging and that instead of an inspector I get the inheritance⦠Or when I change a method in the debugger, I want to paste a sentence (I know, copy/paste are evil but sometimes they can be useful) and I get the versions window⦠Could we find a way to improve that? :) -- Cyril Ferlicot http://www.synectique.eu 165 Avenue Bretagne Lille 59000 France

Iceberg: success and fail
by Serge Stinckwich Aug. 28, 2016

Aug. 28, 2016

Hi all, I was able to do my first commit with Iceberg on github ! So this is great. I'm trying now to move an existing project on SmalltalkHub on github. I made a local repository and when I try a package in this repo, I have the following error. I can put the error report on Iceberg issue tracker if needed. -- Serge Stinckwich UCBN & UMI UMMISCO 209 (IRD/UPMC) Every DSL ends up being Smalltalk http://www.doesnotunderstand.org/

looking into Pharo VM
by Peter Uhnak Aug. 28, 2016

Aug. 28, 2016

Hi, I wanted to start looking into VMs a bit (because crashing several times a day for months now is really pushing my temper), but now I am not sure what is actually the VM. This is what it used to be https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo-vm, but it's maintained anymore. So there's this https://github.com/OpenSmalltalk/opensmalltalk-vm, but there are no builds available for linux/windows, so I guess it's not used for Pharo yet. My understanding is that there is no work done on the VM currently used by Pharo, and all effort goes into the OpenSmalltalk one (to which Pharo hasn't switched yet). Thanks, Peter

broken GitFileTree/IceBerg on Windows because of ProcessWrapper
by Peter Uhnak Aug. 28, 2016

Aug. 28, 2016

Hi, GitFileTree / IceBerg is now broken, because ProcessWrapper (one of the deps on Windows) is downloading plugin from http://leves.web.elte.hu/ProcessWrapper/ProcessWrapperPlugin.dll But of course since the domain is down, it breaks everything. Not the mention downloading dll over http. Peter

ensure blocks in TestCase>>tearDown are not run if an error occurs inside ensured block when test itself was halted ...
by Dale Henrichs Aug. 28, 2016

Aug. 28, 2016

While attempting to characterize the "Empty Debugger" problem that I've recently reported[1], I found that ensure blocks in TestCase>>teardown methods are not run if an Error is signaled while executing the code protected by the ensure block ... when the test itself brings up a debugger --- now that is a mouthful :) ... but a situation that commonly occurs ... I've attached a fileIn with a very simple reproduction of this problem. After filing in the code, execute the following: BugTestCase debug: #test. Abandon the first halt -- this is the halt in the test. Next a debugger is brought up on the error from inside the ensure block in the tearDown method: tearDown [ self error: 'teardown' ] ensure: [ "Imagine that something important NEEDED to be done here" self halt ]. super tearDown. Abandon the error and the `self halt` in the ensure block is not run ... If you take the `self halt` out of the test method itself, the `self halt` in the ensure block _is_ run ... This does not directly lead to the Empty Debugger, but when the ensure blocks called during teardown are not run, a resource is not cleaned up properly and that leads to SharedQueue hanging ... when I interrupt the SharedQueue, I believe that this leads to the "Empty Debugger" a separate, but more nasty problem ... [ann] GTExamples alpha
by Tudor Girba Aug. 28, 2016

Aug. 28, 2016

Hi, Over the last coupe of years Stefan Reichhart and the rest of the GT team worked on an implementation of examples. The work is inspired from previous work done by Markus Gaelli and Adrian Kuhn. As one of the goals of GT is to offer a live programming environment, one important issue is how to move from the static code to live objects as fast as possible. That is why we worked on this library as a solution to provide a link between the static code and live objects. Furthermore, this examples library also enables the definition of assertions on the examples, and this provides the possibility of rethinking the way we construct tests throughout our system. Tests are great as they help us create live objects and then to assert live properties. However, they do not allow us to leverage the objects we create, and this can be a tremendous resource for understanding systems. In our vision, examples should be everywhere and they should be explicitly linked to the static code they exemplify. That is why the library comes with an initial integration in existing tools (such as Nautilus, Spotter, Inspector). The current solution works well and it is the result of several rewrites. We think that the solution is complete in terms of features, but there are still several things to improve and iterate on. To this end, I kindly ask you to take a look at it while distinguishing between the concrete implementation choice (e.g., the current extensive use of pragmas) and the conceptual benefits of the approach. To ease the discussion, we put together a short documentation: http://gtoolkit.org/doc/Examples/examples.html That being said, you can get it with the full GToolkit in Pharo 6.0: http://gtoolkit.org/#install (easiest is to download the ready made image for now) For those that are at ESUG, I will try to provide a short overview during the Show Us Your Project session from today. Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com www.feenk.com "Reasonable is what we are accustomed with."

About better communication in the community
by stepharo Aug. 28, 2016

Aug. 28, 2016

Hi guys the board got a good discussion at ESUG about how to improve and a lot of the discussion turned around improving communication. We got some ideas that we will propose soon but I would like to get *your* ideas. If you have idea about improving communication around pharo please tell us. Stef

Polymorphic results would be good
by stepharo Aug. 27, 2016

Aug. 27, 2016

Hi I'm cleaning Smalltalk ui icons usage again and more :) I just want to share with you. I see code like that KomitDirectoryRemote>>icon ^ 'DIR' KomitGemstoneRemote>> icon ^ Smalltalk ui icons iconNamed: #komitterGemstoneRemote It would be nice if we could be cleaner and makes sure that we do not return totally different objects. Stef PS: Some of you can understand why I was not found of Komitter and suggested to remove it. So let us improve it.
