Re: [Pharo-dev] [OFF-TOPIC] looking for your wisdom... video conference service?

Not true. Terf experience would help in focusing the meeting and make it like a real assembly. We could take a conference theater with podium etc to make it work. I can help facilitating. And we can make an intro video to explain to people how they could just sit their avatar to listen, raise the issues and use the chat or share a window. And go to the lectern to expose something. We can also screenrecord it all for reference and post it back to youtube as a private video. [OFF-TOPIC] looking for your wisdom... video conference service?

Hi, In the board we decided that we need to have a better support for public meetings (particularly for consortium meetings but also for others). So we wanted to explore other services that would allow is more than 10 persons participating (this limit is annoying). Now, I know google hangouts was able to provide more than 10 connections (paying), but now I do not find it⦠maybe I was mistaken? Do you have any other service we can try? Thanks, Esteban

FileDoesNotExist vs. FileDoesNotExistException
by stepharo Sept. 9, 2016

Hi guys in https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/19026/Merge-FileDoesNotExist-and-FileDoes… sven proposed to have FileDoesNotExist and remove the FileDoesNotExistException Before doing it I would like to have your point of view on the names. For now I'm neutral and indeed if we apply it to exception it seems to work for announcement. Now in Spec I was planning to put nearly systematically Presenter at the end of Presenters :). Stef

Cycles lost on startup
by Eliot Miranda Sept. 8, 2016

Sept. 8, 2016

Hi All, we are simulating a full block Pharo image derived from Pharo 6. On startup we see a very sad loss of cycles due to a very slow rebuild of the selector table in Symbol class. Why is this done at each startup? class>selectorTable calls Symbol class> initSelectorTable which then calls CompiledMethod class(Behavior)>allInstancesDo: to enumerate over all methods. This takes a significant amount of time, even on a fast machine. For example, on a 2.%GHz machine this takes about 70 milliseconds. That's a /lot/ of time to squander on startup. And it will grow the larger the image is. The selector table seems to be discarded on shut-down, which seems pointless. If one wants to recompute the table then before or after methods are added or removed seems like a better choice, not on every image startup. In around 2000 we were able to startup VisualWorks images in about 40 milliseconds on the hardware available at the time. I hope someone reconsiders this code and a avoids recomputing the selector table on each startup. _,,,^..^,,,_ best, Eliot

Small OS-... project addition
by Torsten Bergmann Sept. 8, 2016

Sept. 8, 2016

Hi, now also the OSX project in the OS series [1] has support to - directly open a terminal - directly open a file browser (Finder) on the working directory right from the Pharo tools menu. See attached screenshot. Depending on your platform just load - OSOSX - OSWindows - OSLinuxUbuntu - OSLinuxCentOS from catalog. Bye T. [1] http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~OS

Deactivated Locale Still Sets TimeZone
by Sean P. DeNigris Sept. 8, 2016

Sept. 8, 2016

I was surprised to find that Pharo kept setting my local offset, even though I explicitly set it to UTC and then made sure Locale was disabled. Then I saw: Locale class>>#startUp: resuming ... DateAndTime localTimeZone: self localTimeZone. (self activated) ifTrue: [ First it does some work, and then it checks to see whether it's activated! I propose to move the first line into the subsequent block, or maybe better yet - move that behavior into DateAndTime itself. Thoughts? ----- Cheers, Sean -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Deactivated-Locale-Still-Sets-TimeZone-tp4914754.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Developers mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[ANN] FreeType binding
by Thibault Raffaillac Sept. 7, 2016

Sept. 7, 2016

Hello, I am happy to announce the release of a new FreeType binding :) http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~ThibaultRaffaillac/UFFIFreeType I use it to render glyphs with OpenGL, so a few features are still missing compared to FT2: gamma-space blitting (should belong to OSWindow?), GlyphForm class, and subpixel rendering (patch GlyphSlot>>form). FT_Library startUp: true. face := FT_Face fromFile: 'Arial.ttf' index: 0. glyph := face glyph. face setPixelWidth: 0 height: 12. face loadChar: $x asUnicode flags: 4. image := glyph form. Cheers, Thibault
