It all worked. It took a few minutes to load the image, but it worked. It takes ~15 seconds to quit an image that large. I'm not sure what quit is doing, but it appears to be dependent on the image size. Regrettably the squeak vm does a full gc on snapshot, and then, unavoidably, it does a scan of all contexts in the heap, changing any with machine code pcs to have bytecode pcs so that the image can be restarted on a different version/platform. It then writes the heap segments to the file. I guess the scan could be folded into the gc. This is a long time to wait! The gc makes sense only as a way of voiding new space; image loading is simplified only having to load old space segments. It does /not/ make sense semantically because and finalization actions it triggers cannot be responded to until after the snapshot. Instead, it makes much more sense for the image to invoke a full gc immediately prior to snapshot, and drain the finalization queue (something I guess will happen implicitly due to finalization process priority). This means that expected finalization activities such as flushing and closing output files will actually take place. The existing architecture effectively throws these actions away. Both squeak and pharo communities could do well to discuss this and agree on an approach. >> >> >> John Brant > > -- > www.tudorgirba.com > www.feenk.com > > "Every thing has its own flow." > > > > >

Path >> fullName should not be the same as printString
by Damien Pollet Oct. 15, 2016

Path >> printString returns a self-evaluating representation, which is fine. Its symmetric is thus Compiler >> evaluate: aString. (Path from: aString) parses the unix/url representation of a path and results in a Path instance. As far as I understand, #fullName should be the symmetric of that, so that we always have (modulo syntactic normalization, maybe) : (Path from: aString) fullName = aString Note that there's an edge case with the empty string that is wrong (at least it should be confusing to unix guys): Path from: ''. "Path root" Usually the absolute path for the root of the filesystem is explicitly noted '/', and an empty path is equivalent to '.' -- Damien Pollet type less, do more [ | ] http://people.untyped.org/damien.pollet

Shout style table editor (Request for Feedback)
by Nicolai Hess Oct. 13, 2016

Oct. 13, 2016

I am working on a syntax style table editor, see issue for some background about this. 18322 <https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/18322/Settings-for-Syntax-Highlighting-a-…> Settings for Syntax Highlighting a bit confusing 15409 <https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/15409/A-more-complete-set-of-syntactic-co…> A more complete set of syntactic colors is needed Load package ST-StylingPreview ST-StylingPreviewShoutExtension from MCHttpRepository location: 'http://smalltalkhub.com/mc/NicolaiHess/StylerTableEditor/main ' user: '' password: '' And open the preview/editor with: STStylerPreview open. This is a prototype, you can view builtin style tables, create and edit new custom style tables. This has some fake code styler methods to make the styling work for the code preview pane, and it supports more styling attributes than the default styler. This is what I would like to have as a syntax style setting dialog instead of the current confusing behavior. It may be helpful to actually see what syntax styling attributs are actually available.

I wanted to rename some of the iconNamed: into iconName: on menu and settings..... So cooooooool iconNamed: aSymbol "instead of forcing clients to refer to an icon builder such Smalltalk ui icons this message encapsulates it inside the builder itself. When removing uses of Smalltalk ui icons it avoid to force to subclass class with menu to inherit from Model." self flag: #toRemove. self deprecated: 'Please use #iconName: instead' transformWith: '`@receiver iconNamed: `@statements1' -> '`@receiver iconName: `@statements1' . ^ self iconName: aSymbol and bring a menu and the code got transformed. How can we get the recent search in spotter
by stepharo Oct. 12, 2016

Oct. 12, 2016

Hi I read the help and browse everything and history #History, History did not work. Personnally do not find effective to get menu first. To find menu I know where to look and what to do with my mouse. Now finding something I already found and use and that I forgot is a lot more important to me. Why? because there is no other supporting this functionality. Stef

Can Pharo VM be altered to act like GNUStep as well?
by CodeDmitry Oct. 12, 2016

Oct. 12, 2016

I woke up this morning and was wondering if it is possible to create a message API for C for communicating to a running Pharo VM; wrap the API in a preprocessor that abstracts away the calls with objective-C syntax. At the moment, Pharo is significantly simpler to get than GNUstep, and I feel is far cleaner of an environment than GNUstep. I want to write Objective C on Windows, but I can't without getting GNUstep, and I don't want to get GNUstep because I have bad past experience with getting it to run. By creating such a framework, you can write programs in objective C, run them through a preprocessor to turn objective-c constructs to the corresponding message calls(via sockets/pipes/etc)/create corresponding anonymous structs/dispatch tables. And then you can have a C program talk to the Pharo VM. Perhaps even spawn a fresh Pharo VM(In this case it would essentially act like Java, where java command spawns the virtual machines). This would allow native code that seamlessly uses the Pharo VM to deal with managed structures such a strings, hashmaps, arraylists(std::vector-like structures), and interacts with them via sending messages. In essence, it would be C-Pharo network interface which communicates via passing JSON back and forth over a network, where the pharo structures would be recovered from runtime by using a tagged union(variant) type, and sent to pharo by being wrapped in a variant type. What do you guys think about this absurd idea? -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Can-Pharo-VM-be-altered-to-act-like-GNUStep-as-well-t… Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Developers mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Halt once
by stepharo Oct. 11, 2016

Oct. 11, 2016

Hi guys we can do better in terms of comments. https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/19193/Halt-once-comment-mega-sucks In Pharo 60 I tried to use Halt once. There is no menu to set it up anymore so I looked in the class ... :( What a supercool and welcoming comment Halt is provided to support Object>>halt. once | callingContext senderContext node | <debuggerCompleteToSender> resetOnce (#haltOnce senders, #inspectOnce senders) do: [ :method | method ast sendNodes do: [ :sendNode| sendNode removeProperty: #Once ifAbsent: [ ]]] Not a single comment! I'm sure that we can do a lot better and think to all the newbies that will check pharo. Please comments such methods and class. Stef
