error "please insert disk" (windows vm)
by Nicolai Hess Jan. 15, 2017

Jan. 15, 2017

we have the following bug report 16928 <https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/16928/no-disk-in-the-drive-reply-to-World…> "no disk in the drive" reply to World | Save As (and other places) "On a clean Pharo4.0 #40618 image, on Windows 7 World Menu | Save As brings up a modal alert window, "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive <etc>" On my system, it does this 4 times. I'm assuming that each instance refers to one of the card-reader drives which are attached, but without a card inserted. This is a pain to deal with every single time a File Browser or World | Save As dialog is opened. Could the alerts either be - only raised when that specific drive is requested by a user action or, less preferably - given by a non-modal window, and fading away after a period" I was able to reproduce this error on squeaks and pharos window vm. (insert a usb card reader, with card, wait some time , remove only the card, every access on this drive, for example open a FileList and scroll to the drive letter). The solution I found is to call SetErrorMode( *SEM_FAILCRITICALERRORS)* I would like to propose the following change to sqwin32directory.c wrap the call to FindFirstFileW/FindNextFileW with UINT prevMode = SetErrorMode(SEM_FAILCRITICALERRORS); call FindFirstFileW/FindNextFileW SetErrorMode(prevMode); ... and call this functions in at least dir_lookup() (the other file/directory methods are save). Alternative solution, we could call the SetErrorMode function once at program start but I don't know if there are other "useful" errors message that we don't want to disable. I tested both solution, both seems to work fine. What do you think?

NBMacShell still used in GraphViz
by Bernhard Pieber Jan. 15, 2017

Jan. 15, 2017

Happy New Year! The GraphViz project in the Pharo Project Catalog has the tag Pharo5.0 but still uses NBMacShell which seems to have been removed in Pharo 5. What is the right replacement for NBMacShell run: string in newer Pharo versions? Cheers, Bernhard

Hi! anyone with smalltalkCI experience? I'm trying to setup travis CI integration for one of my projects ( https://github.com/ba-st/RenoirSt/tree/smalltalk_ci) and I'm getting a cryptic error on the builds: https://travis-ci.org/ba-st/RenoirSt/jobs/191751457 Any hints are welcome. Thanks, Gabriel

Strange DNU effect on Windows with Pastell
by Torsten Bergmann Jan. 13, 2017

Jan. 13, 2017

I have a strange effect I was not able to find out so far. You can try with any newer Pharo image/VM but here are the exact combination I tried: 1. Load latest VM from https://dl.bintray.com/pharo-project/pharo-vm/ which is as of today (https://dl.bintray.com/pharo-project/pharo-vm/pharo-win-i386-201701091105-b…) Extract in a directory. 2. Download and extract http://files.pharo.org/sources/PharoV50.sources.zip into same directory 3. Use latest image http://files.pharo.org/image/60/60342.zip in same directory 4. Start Pharo and load "Pastell" Metacello new smalltalkhubUser: 'Pharo' project: 'MetaRepoForPharo50'; configuration: 'Pastell'; version: #stable; load. 5. Put some Transcript output into: XMLNodeWithElements>>#doesNotUnderstand: by changing it to: doesNotUnderstand: aMessage "If I have one or more childs whose name is the same as the selector, return them in a PastellCollection. Otherwise, let the DNU propagate" | v | Transcript show: aMessage selector asString;cr. v := self child: aMessage selector. ^ v ifEmpty: [ super doesNotUnderstand: aMessage ] ifNotEmpty: [ v ]. 6. Now evaluate: | xml document htmls html heads | Transcript open;clear. xml := '<html> <head></head> <head></head> </html>'. document := XMLDOMParser parse: xml readStream. htmls := document html. "gives a pastell collection using the #doesNotUnderstand: trick" html := htmls first. "first element from collection, the class is XMLElement, a subclass of XMLNodeWithElements" html head "should call #doesNotUnderstand: again in XMLNodeWithElements but it is not" As you see the #html message triggers the #doesNotUnderstand: while #head does not. For strange reasons the XMLNodeWithElements>>#doesNotUnderstand: is only called once and then not anymore. Did I miss something? Last time Pastell worked was in Pharo 3.0. Is this a Cog issue or something I do not see? It seems to work on Mac (according to Stephan Eggermont). Any idea? Thanks T.

Can anyone explain #asInteger for Strings?
by Richard Sargent Jan. 13, 2017

Jan. 13, 2017

I've come across an implementation of #asInteger and #asSignedInteger in Pharo 3.0 that leaves me scratching my head. Can anyone explain why it was defined to answer what it does for strings that one would really not expect to parse as a number. 'abc-123-xyz-897' asSignedInteger ===> -123 To my mind, the method that does this for the example string should have an intention revealing name like #spelunkIntegerFromString or some such. Thanks, Richard -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Can-anyone-explain-asInteger-for-Strings-tp4929502.ht… Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Developers mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

problem with linux: missing
by Nicolas Anquetil Jan. 13, 2017

Jan. 13, 2017

a fresh install of moose image failed to start on a number of Linux machines because of missing libraries the missing dependencies are libGL and libX11 that for some reasons were not installed (but it was a running linux with graphical interface). See below --- $ ldd vm-display-X11 linux-gate.so.1 => (0xf7766000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib32/libpthread.so.0 (0xf76ff000) libGL.so.1 => not found libX11.so.6 => not found libc.so.6 => /lib32/libc.so.6 (0xf754b000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x5661f000) --- there should be a way to test that. Not too sure how. May be an installer in the form of a headless image using the system ldd (see above) command ? nicolas -- Nicolas Anquetil -- MCF (HDR) Project-Team RMod

collection flatCollect: #something VS (collection collect: #something) flattened
by Julien Delplanque Jan. 12, 2017

Jan. 12, 2017

Hello everyone, While using #flatCollect: on a collection, I realized that, for example, these two code snippets do not behave the same way: #(1 (1)) flatCollect: #yourself. "Raise an error because the array does not contain only collections" (#(1 (1)) collect: #yourself) flattened "Returns #(1 1) Shouldn't these two code snippets behave the same way? Thanks in advance for your answers. Regards, Julien
