CPU and RAM usage of Pharo3 vs. Pharo6
by Holger Freyther June 12, 2017

June 12, 2017

Hey! my current major deployment is still with Pharo3 and due some bigger changes I start to migrate to Pharo6 and today I finally managed to update the test deployment (and be happy with it). The test is not scientific but maybe an early indicator that there is something to look at? The image is idle and not handling any application payload so it might be a fair comparison because of that. RSS + ~16 MiB RAM (~53 Mib vs. ~69 Mib) CPU + ~0.005s per real second passed (think of Amazon AWS why that could matter) (In ~1400s wall clock 57.8s vs. 50.86s cpu time was used) Does anyone else see this increased usage? Has anyone explored the source of it? Does anyone of you share the concern I have? :) holger Outline of the setup: * Take a Pharo3 or Pharo6 base image * Load my code (and its dependencies, big difference is version of Voyage) * Start the images on the test system * Opens a TCP connection, initialize VoyageMongo * Wait for work Look at top for RSS and CPU time used.

hello everyone I am working on project and we are using Roassal for visualization, the problem is that every time i execute my code Pharo crashes ( using the latest image 6.0 on Windows 10 64 bits machine), knowing that the same code runs fine on my collaborators Mac OS machines. Is there any solution that you could offer in such case ?  Moussa Saker LISCO Laboratory Badji Mokhtar-Annaba University, P.O. Box 12, Annaba 23000, Algeria

Fwd: [Off topic] BHP Recruitment & Resource Industry Hackathon "Digital Tribes"
by Ben Coman June 11, 2017

June 11, 2017

The global resources sector faces $1 trillion of impact in the next 10 years from new technologies. On the grapevine I hear that over the next few years BHP are recruiting 2000 people for their Digital Technology Revolution using IoT in the mining/energy/resources industry. "We are doubling our permanent workforce across the globe and have roles based in Australia, Chile (Santiago), Singapore and The United States (Houston)" http://careers.bhpbilliton.com/cw/en/job/789065/technology-revolution Forbe's rate BHP the world's 168th largest company and BHP seem to want to throw some serious money at innovation. As part of this BHP is sponsoring an online hackathon "Digital Tribes" https://www.unearthed.solutions/digital-tribes-perth/ based out of Perth - my home town. Applications are open to anyone around the world and will focus on IoT challenges. Whether you are a student, working full time or joining from anywhere around the world, if you are a "digital native" with hardware and software skills, then this one is for you. Challenge 1: Can you enable operational awareness on civil equipment to achieve compliance to our mine plans? Challenge 2: Can you design a prototype which operates in an ad hoc network suited for distributed safety devices? So the task is probably going to be something to do with location awareness of personelle around haul packs (look for the people in the photos) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haul_truck It would be really cool to get some Pharo into the mix of solutions. Regardless of individual team success or even want a job with BHP, Pharo could gain a lot from simple exposure to some of BHP's key innovation decision makers. This would ideally suit those with Pharo+RaspberryPi+hardware experience (I'm looking at you, robotics guys!) but also (I'm guessing) skills in data science and GPS-like triangulation algorithms. The first thing to do is to apply as an individual... Registrations: 12 June - 18 June Event dates: 30 June - 14 July BHP will then form the teams to get a broad range of skills in each team. For remote participants they aim to form teams in the same location or time zones. So I get the feeling that when they mention "digital native" they are looking for youth, maybe students or new graduates (sub-30yrs?) and are looking for the dynamics of how participants work together. So I think the focus is against existing teams and more on individuals. There is no harm in anyone registering (we can swarm them with "Pharo" just to make them curious), but particularly encourage your high quality students to apply, and even select a few local non-Pharoers with expertise you might lack. I'll hopefully have some more information about the challenges tomorrow. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Hi Ben, If you would like to share Digital Tribes information with your network, you can use the below details. There is no cost to participate. Participants who register their interest will go through an application and selection process. If successful, every participant receives a Raspberry Pi Zero W, gets assigned a team and $50 to work on their prototypes. Teams have 2 weeks to work at their own pace and the prize is paid engagement with BHP. The competition seeks people with skills in data science, software development and hardware engineering. More information can be found here: http://unearthed.link/digitaltribesperth Teams submit their prototype designs and video pitches online. There is also a free Info Session at CORE next Monday <http://unearthed.link/UEDT17_IS> for people to find out more. [I will be attending this session and hopefully can provide additional info after this (if there is of interest) -ben] cheers -ben P.S. I copied in [pharo-dev] to ensure coverage, but please reply just to [pharo-users]. P.P.S. Upcoming weekend resource sector hackthons... (i.e. I think winners get funded as a startup to further develop prototypes) https://www.unearthed.solutions/hackathons/ UNEARTHED CAPE TOWN 2017 21 Jul - 23 Jul 2017 UNEARTHED ARGENTINA 04 Aug - 06 Aug 2017 UNEARTHED SYDNEY 2017 25 Aug - 27 Aug 2017 UNEARTHED DENVER 2017 15 Sep - 17 Sep 2017 UNEARTHED VANCOUVER 2017 29 Sep - 01 Oct 2017 UNEARTHED NORWAY 20 Oct - 22 Oct 2017 UNEARTHED BERLIN 27 Oct - 29 Oct 2017 UNEARTHED SANTIAGO 2017 03 Nov - 05 Nov 2017

Need help for collecting tests usage data
by Blondeau Vincent June 10, 2017

June 10, 2017

Hi, An intern of the RMod research team needs your help: Cheers, Vincent De : Pharo-users [mailto:pharo-users-bounces@lists.pharo.org] De la part de Benoit Verhaeghe Envoyé : mercredi 7 juin 2017 16:47 à : pharo-users(a)lists.pharo.org Objet : [Pharo-users] Need help for collecting tests usage data Hi everyone. I need your help. Iâm working on how pharo developers use the tests. And you are pharo developers. So I developed a plugin and I would like you to download it. You just have to execute this line in a playground Metacello new smalltalkhubUser: 'Pharo' project: 'MetaRepoForPharo60'; configuration: 'TestsUsageAnalyser'; version: #stable; get; load. You will have to do it only one time in one image. Then, if they are updates itâll be done automatically and if you create a new image it will be automatically installed. The plugin will collect data on which tests you run, when, and the modifications you'll have done. Normally, it should be completely transparent for the users and the data are anonymous. If you want more details about the project or how it works, you can answer to this mail, or send me an email at benoit.verhaeghe(a)inria.fr<mailto:benoit.verhaeghe@inria.fr> or by using discord. Pharo 7 and changes/sources files
by Pavel Krivanek June 10, 2017

June 10, 2017

Hi, because during the image bootstrapping all source code is reloaded, it is all placed in the changes file and the sources file is useless. It would be strange to deliver Pharo with empty sources file and big changes so we decided to do sources compacting for every build. So Pharo 7 development versions will be delivered in an archive with three files named like: Pharo7.0-117934d.image Pharo7.0-117934d.changes Pharo7.0-117934d.sources where "117934d" is an abbreviated hash of the Git commit from which the Pharo image was bootstrapped. The sources file will be build-specific and of course you will be able to share it between images based on the same build. In changes file you will have only you own changes. You can test it here: https://ci.inria.fr/pharo/view/7.0/job/70-Bootstrap-32bit/lastSuccessfulBui… Cheers, -- Pavel

Fwd: PharoCloud drops VM hosting and focuses on Ephemeric Cloud
by Marcus Denker June 9, 2017

June 9, 2017

> Begin forwarded message: > From: mikefilonov <mikefilonov(a)gmail.com> Subject: [Pharo-users] PharoCloud drops VM hosting and focuses on Ephemeric Cloud Date: 9 June 2017 at 00:59:33 GMT+2 To: pharo-users(a)lists.pharo.org Reply-To: Any question about pharo is welcome <pharo-users(a)lists.pharo.org> Hello, I just wanted to make some clarifications on what is going on with PharoCloud and how I see the future of the project. PharoCloud is not closing, but just dropping VM hosting support. We will continue to develop and maintain Ephemeric Cloud which allows you to publish Pharo web applications online much easier than any other VM hosting can offer. In some way PharoCloud just becomes more "cloudy" by dropping outdated technologies off :) Our plan is to make the project more community oriented. We integrated PharoCloud with Pharo.org SSO and provide *FREE* access to all *Pharo Association* members. You are welcome to log in to the cloud with your Pharo Association account at: https://www.pharocloud.com/manager/connect We are encouraging you to migrate your applications hosted as Pharocloud VMs to the Ephemeric Cloud. It is much more simple! We have some positive experience already. There are some examples I moved from VM hosting to Ephemeric Cloud: http://pharo.pharocloud.com http://seaside31.swarm.pharocloud.com/ http://eph-b147b6e2.swarm.pharocloud.com/ http://smalltalk.mikefilonov.ru/ Here you can find a quick start guide to Ephemeric cloud and some tips on how to publish your app: http://docs.swarm.pharocloud.com/article/getting_started Also there is a REST API you can use to manage the cloud. And there is also a Pharo wrapper around the REST-API: http://docs.swarm.pharocloud.com/article/pharo_library_reference We also have video guides: quickstart (sorry for old UI of the manager) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1GfuT9M4qo curl example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dKBCpj96cU In case of any questions or issues with images, please feel free to contact me. -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/PharoCloud-drops-VM-hosting-and-focuses-on-Ephemeric-… Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
