Pharo crushes

hello everyoneÂ I am working on project and we are using Roassal for visualization, the problem is that every time i execute my code Pharo crashes ( using the latest image 6.0 on Windows 10 64 bits machine), knowing that the same code runs fine on my collaborators Mac OS machines. The global resources sector faces $1 trillion of impact in the next 10 years from new technologies. On the grapevine I hear that over the next few years BHP are recruiting 2000 people for their Digital Technology Revolution using IoT in the mining/energy/resources industry. "We are doubling our permanent workforce across the globe and have roles based in Australia, Chile (Santiago), Singapore and The United States (Houston)" http://careers.bhpbilliton.com/cw/en/job/789065/technology-revolution Forbe's rate BHP the world's 168th largest company and BHP seem to want to throw some serious money at innovation. As part of this BHP is sponsoring an online hackathon "Digital Tribes" https://www.unearthed.solutions/digital-tribes-perth/ based out of Perth - my home town. Applications are open to anyone around the world and will focus on IoT challenges. Whether you are a student, working full time or joining from anywhere around the world, if you are a "digital native" with hardware and software skills, then this one is for you. Challenge 1: Can you enable operational awareness on civil equipment to achieve compliance to our mine plans? Challenge 2: Can you design a prototype which operates in an ad hoc network suited for distributed safety devices? So the task is probably going to be something to do with location awareness of personelle around haul packs (look for the people in the photos) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haul_truck It would be really cool to get some Pharo into the mix of solutions. Regardless of individual team success or even want a job with BHP, Pharo could gain a lot from simple exposure to some of BHP's key innovation decision makers. This would ideally suit those with Pharo+RaspberryPi+hardware experience (I'm looking at you, robotics guys!) but also (I'm guessing) skills in data science and GPS-like triangulation algorithms. The first thing to do is to apply as an individual... Registrations: 12 June - 18 June Event dates: 30 June - 14 July BHP will then form the teams to get a broad range of skills in each team. For remote participants they aim to form teams in the same location or time zones. So I get the feeling that when they mention "digital native" they are looking for youth, maybe students or new graduates (sub-30yrs?) and are looking for the dynamics of how participants work together. So I think the focus is against existing teams and more on individuals. There is no harm in anyone registering (we can swarm them with "Pharo" just to make them curious), but particularly encourage your high quality students to apply, and even select a few local non-Pharoers with expertise you might lack. Pharo 7 and changes/sources files

Hi, because during the image bootstrapping all source code is reloaded, it is all placed in the changes file and the sources file is useless. It would be strange to deliver Pharo with empty sources file and big changes so we decided to do sources compacting for every build. So Pharo 7 development versions will be delivered in an archive with three files named like: Pharo7.0-117934d.image Pharo7.0-117934d.changes Pharo7.0-117934d.sources where "117934d" is an abbreviated hash of the Git commit from which the Pharo image was bootstrapped. The sources file will be build-specific and of course you will be able to share it between images based on the same build. In changes file you will have only you own changes. remote development via VS Code

I just bumped into Microsoft's MIT Licensed IDE "Visual Studio Code" that runs on OSX, Linux & Windows. What is interesting is their Debug Protocol for connecting to language specific debuggers. * https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/extensionAPI/api-debugging If I had time, it would be interesting (and super cool) to build a Debug Adaptor in Pharo * https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/extensionAPI/language-support as well as a Language Server Protocol provider * https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/extensionAPI/language-support Could make a good student project or two. The skills learnt and demonstrated would be quite marketable outside of the Pharo community. >From a marketing perspective, it might be more palatable for existing Visual Studio users to install Pharo as an extension rather than install Pharo as a whole new IDE (i.e. Pharo) - a common complaint about Smalltalk in general. At a minimum there is the exposure gained from Microsoft's Extension Marketplace, with early adoptors trying out Pharo just-because-its-there. It also smashes that regular criticism of Smalltalk that it lives too much in its on isolated world. It might attract developers wanting to do polygot development, for example (just guessing that might be possible): * game development using Unity libraries for the game engine with Ronnie's minimal-vm embedded as the scripting language, and debugging both in parallel from a single environment * Pharo web server backend with Javascript frontend I vaguely wonder if it would be possible to make a Debug Adaptor that integrates VM & Image level debugging, transparently stepping from Smalltalk into the VM C code. That could be useful for FFI debugging, or developing low-level graphics interfaces that might break our internal IDE. Disclaimer: Like all my random ideas, its a bit vague and dreamy, but I had no concept of it yesterday, so just sharing the find to stimulate future ideas. cheers -ben
