[ANN] Lowtalk, a new Smalltalk dialect that could eventually replace Slang
by Ronie Salgado Sept. 6, 2017

Sept. 6, 2017

Hi All, I am finally glad to announce an initial version of my secret experiment, Lowtalk: https://github.com/ronsaldo/lowtalk Lowtalk is a new Smalltalk dialect that generates relocatable binary object code, that can be linked with any C program or used to generate a standalone executable with the C linker. I am designing Lowtalk as a language for video game developing, where performance and multi-threading support is important. The Lowtalk compiler is completely written in Pharo. The main features of Lowtalk are the following: - The compiler is actually a meta circular evaluator, whose features are used for bootstraping the Lowtalk kernel. - The Lowtalk object model, including the layout of the objects is defined in the language itself. - Direct interface with C. There is an almost 1:1 mapping between the Lowtalk native types and the C types. There is a syntax extension for calling C functions. -Support for real multi-threading. - The current object model uses automatic reference counting, which is slow, but makes supporting real multi-threading easier. - Immediates are based on the Spur object model. - Partial support for generating debugging information in the DWARF standard. It is possible to place breakpoints and get correct stack traces with gdb. Lowtalk is on the line of my work with Lowcode, and I am planning on making a Lowtalk backend that uses Lowcode. The Lowtalk type system is almost the same as the one that I described at the paper: Lowcode: Extending Pharo with C Types to Improve Performance I will make a video later, and a proper demonstration at ESUG. Best regards, Ronie

[ann] moldable editor - transcript with adornments
by Tudor Girba Sept. 4, 2017

Sept. 4, 2017

Hi, We are happy to announce that the moldable editor helped us create a richer transcript: GT Transcript. The transcript is traditionally a stream of plain text. As we now have an elaborate editor, we can take advantage of it to help us display richer representations. The API is backward compatible with the existing transcript. To enable the new features, we introduced a builder. For example: transcript nextPutAll: âsomethingâ becomes transcript next putAll: âsomethingâ and after #next we can add multiple attributes that we want to affect the following insertion of a text. Below you can find an example detailing most of the API. The most notable additions is the support for expandable adornments. For example, #showException: provides an in-place expansion of the stack of the exception context. To get an idea of how this tool can be useful, take a look at the following video showing the visual logging of a Bloc animation: https://youtu.be/9VATYNaLwJY The code can be found in the new incarnation of GToolkit: Iceberg enableMetacelloIntegration: true. Metacello new baseline: 'GToolkit'; repository: 'github://feenkcom/gtoolkit/src'; load. Cheers, The feenk team -- www.tudorgirba.com www.feenk.com âSoftware has no shape. Esteban's ChangeLog week of 28 August 2017
by estebanlm＠gmail.com Sept. 4, 2017

Sept. 4, 2017

Hello! This is my weekly ChangeLog, from 28 August 2017 to 3 September 2017. You can see it in a better format by going here: http://log.smallworks.eu/web/search?from=28/8/2017&to=3/9/2017 ChangeLog ========= 29 August 2017: --------------- * I just released [Iceberg v0.5.7](https://github.com/pharo-vcs/iceberg/releases/tag/v0.5.7) with some minor (but necessary) fixes. * fixes cherry pick bug on multiple packages (issue #450) * indirectly fixes issues #403, #440 and #442 * fixes windows crashes (and from 0.5.6) * fixes "restore" clone * adds IceLog to query history * minor enhancements This version also updates 0.25.1 branch from [libgit2 bindings](https://github.com/pharo-vcs/libgit2-pharo-bindings/tree/v0.25.1), who makes Windows not crash :) Now, there are still a remaining problem which is: writing the index for windows is taking ages for pharo project, which means any huge project will also take ages... I need to dig into this more in detail :( cheers! Esteban

State of 64bits? Errors during configuration loading
by Cyril Ferlicot Sept. 4, 2017

Sept. 4, 2017

Hi, I would like to know the state of the 64bits builds. At Synectique we tried to build on of our tools in 64bits on ubuntu slaves but we get a lot a VM crashes. We get the image/vm with this command: wget --quiet -O - get.pharo.org/64/$PHARO+$VM | bash $PHARO = 61 $VM = vm Here is the command we launch: ./pharo Pharo.image --no-default-preferences eval --save 'Metacello new repository:'\''http://smalltalkhub.com/mc/*******/*********/main'\''; configuration: '\''********'\''; version: #development; load' And I join an example of log we get when the vm crash. Is that a known issue? -- Cyril Ferlicot https://ferlicot.fr http://www.synectique.eu 2 rue Jacques Prévert 01, 59650 Villeneuve d'ascq France
