Changed #atEnd primitive - #atEnd vs #next returning nil
by Sven Van Caekenberghe April 20, 2018

April 20, 2018

Somehow, somewhere there was a change to the implementation of the primitive called by some streams' #atEnd. IIRC, someone said it is implemented as 'remaining size being zero' and some virtual unix files like /dev/random are zero sized. Now, all kinds of changes are being done image size to work around this. I am a strong believer in simple, real (i.e. infinite) streams, but I am not sure we are doing the right thing here. Point is, I am not sure #next returning nil is official and universal. Consider the comments: Stream>>#next "Answer the next object accessible by the receiver." ReadStream>>#next "Primitive. Answer the next object in the Stream represented by the receiver. Fail if the collection of this stream is not an Array or a String. Fail if the stream is positioned at its end, or if the position is out of bounds in the collection. Optional. See Object documentation whatIsAPrimitive." Note how there is no talk about returning nil ! I think we should discuss about this first. Was the low level change really correct and the right thing to do ? Note also that a Guille introduced something new, #closed which is related to the difference between having no more elements (maybe right now, like an open network stream) and never ever being able to produce more data. DelayScheduler cleanup & Bootstrap
by Ben Coman April 20, 2018

April 20, 2018

I am doing a pass to cleanup the DelayScheduler hierarchy. I'll be refactoring of the hierarchy to aid code understanding and eliminate redundant instance variables from the original code. The target structure is.... DelayNullScheduler -- minimum interface to avoid errors in rest of system (6 empty methods) |__DelayBasicScheduler -- fully working sans race protection (equivalent to Courageous scheduler) |__DelaySpinScheduler -- plus race protection Can someone advise how/where the Bootstrap loads Delay and the DelaySchedulers? where the invocation of Delay_class>>#initialize selects the delay scheduler. I need to determine whether during transition the Bootstrap might need to temporarily hop to a different scheduler, and how to provide the new structure in the Image for operational testing before switching. cheers -ben

Slot Questions
by Sean P. DeNigris April 19, 2018

April 19, 2018

Stateful traits inspired me to reread the flexible object layout paper and I came up with a few questions about slots: - What is the plan for tool support? For example, it seems that to make slots discoverable like any other class or message, "References to it" should include class definitions, which should be the primary slot client. - Why does IndexedSlot have a #name slot? I thought the index and name were "either or" for instVars. Thanks! ----- Cheers, Sean -- Sent from: http://forum.world.st/Pharo-Smalltalk-Developers-f1294837.html
