Pharo Bootstrap
by Guido Chari June 26, 2018

June 26, 2018

I followed the instructions for building the image in https://github.com/guillep/PharoBootstrap and I get: ...RETRY->BaselineOfPharoBootstrapProcess ...RETRY->BaselineOfPharoBootstrapProcess ...FAILED->BaselineOfPharoBootstrapProcessCould not resolve: BaselineOfPharoBootstrapProcess [BaselineOfPharoBootstrapProcess] in /Users/guidochari/Documents/Projects/Research/Nopsys/CogNOS/image/pharo-local/package-cache filetree:///Users/guidochari/Documents/Projects/Research/Nopsys/PharoBootstrap I then resort to just execute the command that travis executes ( ./scripts/install-packages.sh) and it works. But when I open the image I can not find PBBootstrapSpur3250, needed for running the bootstrapping. Best, Guido

Esteban's ChangeLog week of 18 June 2018
by estebanlm＠gmail.com June 25, 2018

June 25, 2018

Hello! This is my weekly ChangeLog, from 18 June 2018 to 24 June 2018. You can see it in a better format by going here: http://log.smallworks.eu/web/search?from=18/6/2018&to=24/6/2018 ChangeLog ========= 21 June 2018: ------------- * I made a port of [OmniBase](https://github.com/estebanlm/OmniBase) for Pharo 6+ . While this is a discussed DB, some peple likes it so is good to have it available. 20 June 2018: ------------- * I'm working on getting Pharo and the PharoVM to work properly on win 64bit. While there is still work to do, I already get a compilation that works for most cases (including iceberg). Which is sad about this is I needed to split the build into parts and prepare the VM with dependencies upload to a repository. This works, and simplifies a lot the building process. Next days I will continue the remaining dependency: cairo. 19 June 2018: ------------- * again, I spent last two days on makign [this PR](https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo/pull/1546) to pass. The PR is about "[case: 22146](https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/22146) - update metacello to allow alternate filetree formats", and is important to allow baselines to use tonel format without changing all their baselines and without needing to create a special notation for tonel formats. This way, all baselines referred as "github://", etc. will be correctly interpreted as tonel or cypress format automatically. cheers! Esteban

Empirical Analysis of Programming Language Adoption
by Ben Coman June 23, 2018

June 23, 2018

I bumped into a paper "Empirical Analysis of Programming Language Adoption" that I thought might be of interest to others since we'd like to increase Pharo's mindshare. (http://sns.cs.princeton.edu/docs/asr-oopsla13.pdf) TLDR; my top three take outs were... Figure 5 indicates that simple syntax and languages features don't attract new users, and of the things we can control the most important are... performance, portability and development speed. Figure 12 suggests a strategy to promote useful libraries rather than language features. I guess that might best take take the form blogs showing the use of libraries. Table 7 makes and interesting assertion that static types are more important for readability than preventing bugs. cheers -ben P.S. Then I bumped into "Toward Semantic Foundations for Program Editors" (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1703.08694.pdf) which was over my head but I guess it might be interesting to people working in UI area.

strange debugging
by Ben Coman June 22, 2018

June 22, 2018

Not sure if this is intended behaviour... in a brand new build 71053, open a browser GTGenericStackDebuggerTest >> testBasic right-click and choose "Debug" the debugger opens about on the third statement. Clicking <Restart> doesn't improve things, and then clicking <Into> shows the stack on MetaLink>>uninstall. cheers -ben

Fuel Error in Latest Launcher
by Sean P. DeNigris June 22, 2018

June 22, 2018

While Fuel was trying to serialize a sort block ([ :a :b | a name < b name ]), I got CompiledMethod>>errorSubscriptBounds:. One strange thing about the block is that the outerContext is `SortedCollection>>DoIt`, meaning I probably had to initialize it by hand due to a previous Fuel problem. The odd thing about the error is that this object graph was serializing and materializing just fine before I upgraded Pharo Launcher. Call chain: CompiledMethod(Object)>>errorSubscriptBounds: CompiledMethod(Object)>>at: InstructionStream>>interpretNextV3PlusClosureInstructionFor: OpalEncoderForV3PlusClosures class>>interpretNextInstructionFor:in: InstructionStream>>interpretNextInstructionFor: [ (InstructionStream new method: self pc: pc) interpretNextInstructionFor: nil ] in CompiledMethod(CompiledCode)>>abstractBytecodeMessageAt: in Block: [ (InstructionStream new method: self pc: pc)... BlockClosure>>on:do: CompiledMethod(CompiledCode)>>abstractBytecodeMessageAt: BlockClosure>>blockCreationBytecodeMessage BlockClosure>>endPC BlockClosure>>abstractBytecodeMessagesDo: BlockClosure>>isClean BlockClosure>>shouldBeSubstitutedByCleanCopy BlockClosure>>fuelAccept: FLLightGeneralMapper>>mapAndTrace: ----- Cheers, Sean -- Sent from: http://forum.world.st/Pharo-Smalltalk-Developers-f1294837.html
