[Pharo-project] Analog to Dolphin's #forkMainIfMain?
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Aug. 17, 2009

Aug. 17, 2009

Is there anything in Pharo that starts a new main thread to carry on for one that is about to get blocked? It might be that Pharo does not need it, since sockets are serviced by the VM, where Dolphin (at least prior to overlapped calls) did the I/O through the event loop; if the main thread stopped, so did Windows event dispatching, and hence no socket I/O. Dolphin to some extent, and WindowBuilder to (IIRC) a large extent create modal loops in Smalltalk code. I see a few references to such things in Pharo, but I'm fairly lost. Where should I start reading and/or browsing? Bill

[Pharo-project] [Fix] Call initialsPerSe in isHarvester
by Alexandre Bergel Aug. 17, 2009

Aug. 17, 2009

Issue #1070 initialsPerSe is a deprecated method. When opening an image, a deprecated error shows up. "Author uniqueInstance fullNamePerSe" should be used in instead. The following .cs fixes this. On google code Cheers, Alexandre -- _,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;: Alexandre Bergel http://www.bergel.eu ^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;.

Re: [Pharo-project] Help on Polymorph [was How to build a GUI]
by laurent laffont Aug. 17, 2009

GUI quite easily ... ). - What is the idea behind the word "Pluggable" (PluggableButton, PluggableDialogWindow, ....) ? - It seems that many (all ?) UI in Pharo use the builder pattern. Great, but that's a lot of stuff for me while trying to learn (with almost no time, I had forgotten that a new child take soooo much time). Do you know a package/class with simpler UI to study ? - In Toolbuilder, what the word "Spec" means ? Some thoughts: - Toolbuilder-Examples package is great to study how to use Toolbuilder. I think it should be included in Pharo with some other XXX-Examples packages that might exists. - Is there a somewhat easier way to navigate through class and methods documentation than in System Browser ? I think that documentation is not easily seen, so it doesn't push developers to write documentation, so there's not a lot of documentation, so people don't write tools to read documentation, ... There should be a system / tool to reward developpers that write good class / package documentation with examples. Regards, Laurent

[Pharo-project] Best practices for writing data to disk.
by John Escobedo Aug. 17, 2009

Aug. 17, 2009

I'm having trouble finding out if classic squeak methods work in this case. Can anyone recommend a best practice if I have an object that holds a large, procedurally created, orderedCollection and I want to be able to read/write it from a file (text or binary)? Specifically. I have an object called "PrimeBank", that holds a huge set of prime numbers. Its methods can grow this set at any time. As the set gets larger, I'd like to be able to write it out to a file and read it in when I'm running the code on another image. Ideally I think I'd like the file to be human readable and editable. - John E.

this morning I lost some time because when I loaded moose I got cursor blinking bug. After investigating it I see that Moose use Mondrian which in his turn load an old version of morphic since it needs some event notification. This illustrates a more general scenario. How do we support the management of patches in general (especially patches that for various reasons would not be integrated in a packages). It seems that first we need to distinguish load and merge for installer or gofer. - load (the version I load take precedence on the one existing in the image) - merge the delta between the two when no conflict is loaded. What is the current process people usually use? Stef

[Pharo-project] [BUG] Blink cursor does not work!
by Torsten Bergmann Aug. 17, 2009

Aug. 17, 2009

Hi Stef, I'm in Pharo1.0beta Latest update: #10414 too and I DO HAVE the method #onBlinkCursor in TextMorph. It's included in both changesets at http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=1039 and the last one (BlinkingCursor.2.cs) was the base for inclusion. Try updating with a fresh core from the website...
