[Pharo-project] Compiler tests naming
by Michael Roberts Sept. 28, 2009

Sept. 28, 2009

I've noticed we've got two sets of compiler tests. One category part of the compiler and one part of its own tests package. Assume we want to just the tests all into their own package? thanks, Mike

[Pharo-project] [ANN] STicky
by Hernán Morales Durand Sept. 28, 2009

Sept. 28, 2009

STicky is a pluggable real-time evaluator and/or translator workspace aimed to learn languages. For a quick overview please take a look at the presentation video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9uUIEaGyoU The Smalltalk evaluator could be useful in learning courses or for newbies typing expressions, but other translators/evaluators may help with more advanced usage, it all depends of the source and target languages you're using. Some default external translators, which does the real job, were included : Smalltalk to JavaScript (ST2JS by Diego Gomez Deck) Smalltlak to Java (Smalltalk2Java by Alexandre Bergel) Smalltalk to SQL (ROE by Avi Bryant) Smalltalk to AST nodes (Marcus Denker et al) HTML validator ( Todd Blanchard) JSON to Smalltalk (Tony Garnock-Jones et al) (...contact me if you want to add your translator in the release, a facility to automatic installation of translators is provided) You can easily plug translators and the workspace will update the current contents dynamically inside a sticky-like dialog or a fixed pane, the updater interface was decoupled to make possible other kinds of widgets too, but this is a bit experimental. Downloads from: http://www.squeaksource.com/STicky.html Comments are welcome. Hernán

[Pharo-project] Mac carbon VM goes to 4.2.2Beta1U
by John M McIntosh Sept. 28, 2009

Sept. 28, 2009

I've updated the Macintosh Carbon VM to include the latest changes for serial port logic which was driven by changes in the Unix serial port plugin. Plus Bert identified that horizontal wheel scrolling didn't work correctly, oddly it's never worked since I think 2002. People must not use those funky dual touch/action track pads on the macintosh I'd guess. I've added these changes to the SVN tree on squeakvm.org I've also uploaded the new VM as Squeak 4.2.2beta1U.app.zip found via http://smalltalkconsulting.com/squeak.html If someone other than Bert confirm the horizontal scrolling works, plus I couldn't test the altered serial port logic since I don't have a serial like device around that my mac would talk to. Promptly report any issues... Hint, don't forget to purchase your copy of ST80Docs or SqueakDocs on the iPhone to help defer the costs of my yearly Apple development license as you click thru to download the VM. 4.2.2b1 We update system to 10.6.1 and newest xCode Build powerpc VM with gcc 4.0 Run Static Analyser FilePlugin.c SetVMPathFromApplicationDirectory memory leak from vmPathString NSCursorWrappers.m fix memory leak, bitmap, image sqMacMain.c fixupNonAbsolutePath memory leak from resourcePathString sqMacNSPluginUILogic2.c handle_CMD_SHARED_MEMORY memory leak from colorspace sqmacUIEventsUniversal.c Bert reported scroll wheel movement was wrong. We did not get kEventParamMouseWheelAxis correctly This problem oddly has existed for years. SerialPort, use unix serial port logic that now supports named ports, instead of older carbon solutions. -- = = = ======================================================================== John M. Re: [Pharo-project] CairoGraphics
by Ken Treis Sept. 28, 2009

Hi Damien, Yes it definitely works -- at least for me, on Mac OS X. Recent VMs from John McIntosh have the plugin already, though on the mac it only searches for libraries in a few select places and it doesn't accept absolute paths. Hopefully this will be resolved soon; for now I've symlinked the library into my Squeak VM's plugins folder. On Linux you may have to compile a VM yourself to get the plugin; I know it's in the VM source tree. For a quick demo, try: > |image cr backgroundGradient textGradient| > image := CRImageSurface format: CRFormat argb32 extent: 300@200. > cr := image context. > backgroundGradient := CRLinearGradient from: 0@0 to: 150@200. > backgroundGradient addStopAt: 0 color: Color white. > backgroundGradient addStopAt: 1 color: Color lightGray. > cr > source: backgroundGradient; > paint. > cr moveTo: 30@100. > cr > selectFontFace: 'Sans'; > fontSize: 40. > cr textPath: 'Hello, World!'. > cr > source: Color green; > strokePreserve. > textGradient := CRLinearGradient from: 0@50 to: 300@50. > textGradient addStopAt: 0 color: Color blue alpha: 0.2. > textGradient addStopAt: 1 color: Color blue alpha: 0.8. > cr > source: textGradient; > fill. > image writeToPng: '/Users/kdt/Desktop/hello.png'. This isn't anything super exciting to look at, but if you've got the IA32ABI plugin and have set up CRLibrary class>>libraryPath to point to the Cairo library, you should be able to see the output (attached). I'll try to post a more impressive demo soon. Ken On Sep 25, 2009, at 2:08 AM, Damien Cassou wrote: > Hi Ken, > > I'm going to have 4 students working during 4 months on Smalltalk. [Pharo-project] CAnalyer
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Sept. 28, 2009

Sept. 28, 2009

I was digging around on Squeak Source for OSProcess and friends, and ran across CAnalyzer. Are there any papers on it? How robust is it? What does it extract from C code? For example, might one put the GSL (www.gnu.org/software/gsl) header files into it, pull out all of the structure definitions and function prototypes, and generate LOTS of FFI code to make a wrapper? Just a thought... Bill

Stef, It's only fair to immortalize you in a final report on a grant. As near as I can tell, it should be: Dr.\ St\'{e}phane Ducasse Let me know if that's not right. Bill

[Pharo-project] Monticello15 file support?
by Hernán Morales Durand Sept. 28, 2009

Sept. 28, 2009

Dear list members, As part of a data mining process I need to use many external files. File based developement is boring and error prone, as other developers should reproduce the same directory structure to load my packages in their images, etc. I can use InstanceEncoder but sometimes I need to view header information in files. >From this announce http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2008-December/133031… there is a claim of Monticello basic support of external files as packages although I've tested it without success, that means, the package was created but it didn't included the contents of any file in a directory with the same name as the Monticello package. Is that the intended functionality? Did I miss some extra setup or step besides hitting the "Save" button? (I'm using Monticello.impl-mtf.648 and PackageInfo-Base-mtf.70) And it seems too there's only one image with file support integrated (the "LPF image" : 090628-1523_Squeak3.10.2-lpf) but I want to use it in other images, namely Squeak and Pharo. My options are: -Ask for feasible alternatives to you. -Keep mantaining external files without taking advantage of image based developement. -Adapt PackageInfo/MCPackage to latest forked Monticellos (I'm not tempted with this at all, still I see no technical reason why Monticello was forked so many times...) There are plans to integrate the external files feature in Squeak or Pharo? Someone already has something "better"? Cheers Hernán
