[Pharo-project] Update 10458 fails with MNU
by Martin McClure Sept. 29, 2009

Sept. 29, 2009

Downloaded 09.09.3, install fresh, launch, System->update. Runs for a while, then fails while loading 10458. Failure is MNU. In [] in ScriptLoader>>loadTogether:merge: the code [:fn | loader addVersion: (self loadVersionFromFileNamed: fn)] Is failing, #loadVersionFromFileNamed: is answering nil when fn is 'Gofer-lr.48.mcz'. And, indeed my package-cache does not contain 'Gofer-lr.48.mcz', but it does have Gofer-lr.51.mcz. Regards, -Martin

[Pharo-project] Morph extension
by Gary Chambers Sept. 29, 2009

Sept. 29, 2009

After some experimenting I can get over 10% perfromance improvement with window operations when fillStyle; borderStyle; hResizing; vResizing are made as instance variables of Morph, rather than going through extension. I thought Marcus has mentioned this some time ago, but no progress? There is obviously an issue with name collision/shadowing but not many methods in core need changing to accomodate. Whilst on the subject I am wondering on everyone's opinion on merging the behaviour of color/borderColor/borderWidth with that of fillStyle... sure to be some gains there! Regards, Gary

[Pharo-project] The tool is called "Method Search" or "Message Names"?
by Oscar Nierstrasz Sept. 29, 2009

Sept. 29, 2009

In the Tools menus the tool labeled "Method Search" opens a tool called "Method Names". Which is it? (The the Pharo book we are calling it "Method Names", but we should be consistent.) - on

[Pharo-project] Citing Pharo
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Sept. 29, 2009

Sept. 29, 2009

What is the proper way to cite Pharo? Is there a proper way? :) If not, we might take some guidance from R, which sprays out the text below in response to citation(). Bill To cite R in publications use: R Development Core Team (2008). R: A language and environment for statistical computing. R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria. ISBN 3-900051-07-0, URL http://www.R-project.org. A BibTeX entry for LaTeX users is @Manual{, title = {R: A Language and Environment for Statistical Computing}, author = {{R Development Core Team}}, organization = {R Foundation for Statistical Computing}, address = {Vienna, Austria}, year = {2008}, note = {{ISBN} 3-900051-07-0}, url = {http://www.R-project.org}, } We have invested a lot of time and effort in creating R, please cite it when using it for data analysis. See also âcitation("pkgname")â for citing R packages.

[Pharo-project] Link to Pharo by example book
by Noury Bouraqadi Sept. 29, 2009

Sept. 29, 2009

Hi, I think the tutorial/book page should include a reference to "Pharo by example" instead of "Squeak by example" http://www.pharo-project.org/documentation/tutorials-books (I don't have a login otherwise I would do it) Also, it should be usefull to insert links to all required files for running examples. I have to provide a student of mine with them. Which image should he use ? [Pharo-project] Alien
by Torsten Bergmann Sept. 29, 2009

Sept. 29, 2009

According to the Alien squeaksource page (wiki section) one has to evaluate ScriptLoader loadLatestPackage: 'AlienLoader' from: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/Alien'. (Smalltalk at: #AlienLoader) load But this crashes in latest core #10462 while it seems to load in core #10441. And my question about the state and a pointer to the alien plugin for win32 is also still unanswered... [Pharo-project] OT: vm performance
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Sept. 29, 2009

Sept. 29, 2009

Hello all, Here I am referring to a vm in the OS sense. Suppose you are forced to run code on a virtual machine running on a blade computer hidden behind locked doors. Access to the machine is limited to a remote desktop connection. You suspect that the machine is far too busy for its own good. Is there any way to test that? Is there any way to separate network latency from the box being slow, or perhaps just plain busy restoring a backup to fix up the most recent crash of some piece of hardware or who-knows-what software? Something that periodically runs a lightweight benchmark and logs the results comes to mind. Is there something that is commonly used for such measurments? I would rather not add too badly to machine's workload, but it gets sloooooowwwwwww at times :( Getting some data to objectify that statement could be useful. Bill
