[Pharo-project] Starting out: db and gui recommendation
by Rick Morrison Oct. 28, 2009

Oct. 28, 2009

I am a Java & .Net application programmer who has flirted with Smalltalk for a long time without doing the "deep dive" to really understand it. Pharo and Seaside are making me think that everything is coming together now for another try. That and some micro-ISV ambitions to give me a real reason to write some code outside of work. For my type of project I really need a db package and a gui package. That leads to the questions: 1. Right now, is SqeakDBX my best choice for a db interface? Sqlite is my db of choice for the project I have in mind. 2. For the UI, I've been reading about the choices and I'm having a hard time finding a currently supported project. Do I go with polymorph by default? For the UI, what about "self-hosting" a Seaside instance and doing the UI in the browser? Ie, the app starts a Seaside server and opens a browser window pointed at the apps main window (home page). Can that be done? Is it a good idea? I hope you can give me some direction. I like the direction of Pharo and Seaside is just plain cool. I want to do this to get my head outside the coding box I'm kind of stuck in. And have some fun. Thanks for any help, Rick

[Pharo-project] How to make Pharo produce random garbage bytes
by Niko Schwarz Oct. 28, 2009

Oct. 28, 2009

Hi list, I learned something fun today from a friend, how to make Pharo produce random garbage! Make a class AC which is defined as: Object subclass: #AC instanceVariableNames: 'a' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'OB-Standard-Browsers' Then you make a second class AB defined as: Object variableByteSubclass: #AB instanceVariableNames: '' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'OB-Standard-Browsers' Then you make accessors for 'a' in AC Now execute: AB superclass: AC And then you do "AB new a" which gives you back random data. Cheers, Niko

[Pharo-project] ClassOrganizer oddities
by Igor Stasenko Oct. 28, 2009

Oct. 28, 2009

I discovered a puzzling behavior: removeElement: element | oldCat | oldCat := self categoryOfElement: element. SystemChangeNotifier uniqueInstance doSilently: [ super removeElement: element]. self notifyOfChangedSelector: element from: oldCat to: (self categoryOfElement: element). I staring at it and i wonder, what the author meant by doing: super removeElement: element which effectively wipes out given element, but then next line uses: self categoryOfElement: element huh??? -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

[Pharo-project] Strange behavior of #printString method
by nullPointer Oct. 28, 2009

Oct. 28, 2009

I don´t understand the behavior of printString method. in a class I define a method #style , which returns an array... style style notNil ifTrue:[ ^style ] ifFalse:[ ^{ self borderColor . self borderWidth . self color . self gradientColor . (self cornerStyle = #rounded) . true }]. That method returns many times an Array. If #printString of that array is called the result is... '{Color black. 0. (Color r: 0.892 g: 0.887 b: 0.879). nil. false. true}' Well i have another method with same name in another class style ^{ self borderColor . self borderWidth . self color . self gradientColor . (self cornerStyle = #rounded) . true } but in that case when i call #printString of the Array result ... 'an Array(Color transparent 0 (Color r: 0.827 g: 0.827 b: 0.827) nil true true)'. I don´t understand nothing :| Both are instances of Array, and both is declared of same way. [Pharo-project] NewCompiler for pharo?
by Stéphane Ducasse Oct. 27, 2009

Oct. 27, 2009

Hi I would really like to know the status of the newcompiler for pharo? - when do you think we will be able to use it? - what is left to do? - how can people help? - is there a way to get something compiled in between? so I go back to preclosure or just hack the old compiler? Stef

[Pharo-project] Thread-safe collections
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Oct. 27, 2009

Oct. 27, 2009

Hello all, I just looked around for thread-safe collections, and found nothing that looks like a shared dictionary. The squeak-dev archives contain the obligatory newbie posts (wanting all collections to be thread safe) and the expected replies, some of which are overly dismissive of the idea. Something that protects things like #at:ifAbsentPut: and friends is _really_ useful. Am I missing an existing implementation? Bill

[Pharo-project] OCompletion in the rc1 dev image
by Niko Schwarz Oct. 27, 2009

Oct. 27, 2009

Hi list, in the most recent dev image (9.10.5), OCompletion is broken for me. I lost my reproducible test case, but the gist was that sometimes when OCompletion had no idea which type a temporal variable would be, you were unable to insert code behind that variable, because if you tried, a debugger would show up. The problem appears to be Debugger>guessTypeForName:. debuggerMap can be nil and if it is, the method fails. I changed the method to the following, and then the strange errors that occur on my image disappear: guessTypeForName: aString | index object | index := debuggerMap ifNotNil: [(debuggerMap tempNamesForContext: self selectedContext) indexOf: aString ifAbsent: []]. object := index ifNil: [index := self receiver class allInstVarNames indexOf: aString ifAbsent: []. index ifNil: [^ nil]. self receiver instVarAt: index] ifNotNil: [self selectedContext tempAt: index]. ^ object class Essentially, I leave index at nil, if debugerMap is nil. I don't know enough about OCompletion to tell whether this is a fix, or makes things worse somehow. Cheers, Niko

[Pharo-project] [SIXX] feedback
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Oct. 27, 2009

Oct. 27, 2009

Masashi, Thanks for adding support for Pharo! So far, I have tried only the example from the workspace opened by the installation, but it was nice to see it work. Your timing was perfect, because I just encountered my first need for a serializer on Pharo. The download packaging and instructions are a little confusing. Under Installation, you say to file in install.st. The only mention of Pharo in the download section is next to the .sar file, which Pharo appears to load correctly. If the .sar is the intended way to load it, it should be mentioned in the Installation section. Thanks! Bill
