[Pharo-project] Is serving files different in Pharo?

Hallo, I have just install and started playing a bit with Pharo today. The first thing I tried was to take one of my Seaside projects from Squeak and see if I can get it going in Pharo? Everything went very smoothly, except for the following annoying problem - which I - rather embarrassingly - can't seem to figure out myself. Any help/hints/pointers will be greatly appreciated. For my Squeak/Seaside project I've subclassed WAKomEncoded and have overridden the createService selector to allow for a custom entry point and the ability to serve files from this point. createService | basePath seaside assembly | basePath := 'encore'. seaside := self entryPoint: (WADispatcher default setName: basePath). assembly := ModuleAssembly core. assembly serverRoot: FileDirectory default fullName. assembly alias: '/' , basePath to: [assembly addPlug: [:request | seaside process: request]]. assembly documentRoot: FileDirectory default fullName. assembly directoryIndex: 'index.html index.htm'. assembly serveFiles. ^ (HttpService startOn: port named: 'comanche') plug: assembly rootModule; yourself. The custom entry point still works fine, but for some strange reason none of my files are served correctly. Is there a different approach to serving files from within Pharo/Seaside that I should make use of? I have downloaded and used this Pharo package: pharo1.0-10491-rc1dev09.10.5.zip. [Pharo-project] Segmentation fault when starting pharo 1.0rc1 on Ubuntu 64bit server

Hi - Has anyone successfully run a newer version of Pharo on either Ubuntu 9.04 or Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit server? When I try to start the command line simply says "Segmentation fault" and does not emit a stack trace. The UUIDPlugin is named UUIDPlugin.bak. I am attempting to use the latest versions of pharo, pharo sources and both the pharo vm or squeak 3.11 vm from the pharo-project.org site. I have installed ia32-libs and I do know that the latest pharo runs on Ubuntu Desktop 9.04. If you have gotten it running, will you please send me the output of dkpg -l or a description of whatever you did to get it started? Thanks Also, I'd be happy to attempt other solutions or provide more information as I've tried what I know how to do and checked what I know to check. Thanks Paul

Dear List, I was looking for a way to test whether a class is abstract or not. One easy way, is to check whether the class sends the message subclassResponsibility. This is not perfect, since we should also check whether the receiver is 'self' and this is the only statement in the method body. Looking at sender of #subclassResponsibiliy did not reveal anything. I propose to define the following method: Behavior>>isAbstract ^ self methods anySatisfy: [:cm | cm sendsSelector: #subclassResponsibility ] Shall I can create an issue and add a changeset? Can someone please explain to me how to run code critic on a single class or a single package? I managed to run it (overnight) on Smalltalk. It found 70189 problems, many of them jaw-dropping. But I would like to focus it on my code! Andrew

Hi, Morph>>heading is from eToy. It is used to rotate a Morph. If we remove it, we remove the possibility to rotate a morph. What are your positions about this behavior ? Do we considere it as a system behavior or as an eToy thing which must be removed ? [Pharo-project] Shared directories: The bug is quicker than the eye

Hello all, I'm not sure what to make of this one. I just spent a couple of hours trying to find the "leak" in an algorithm of mine. It was reading roughly 1200 records, claiming to have processed all of them, and yet writing only about 450 rows into an output text file. One clue should have been that the number of output rows was somewhat random; I did not fully appreciate that until I worked around the problme. I tried an explicit #flush - no help. I looked for logic errors and found none. The file was being written to a Windows hosted share mounted by CIFS (which I am learning to view with contempt) from Ubuntu 9.04. You can see where this is going: writing the file locally gave the expected result. Any ideas on how one might further isolate the problem? My trust in Windows is well known<g>; I have never liked shared directories; I _really_ do not like CIFS as compared (reliability wise) to SMBFS; the network between me and the server is in question too (long story). All of that said, file support in Squeak, and hence so far inherited by Pharo, is not the best code I have seen to date, so it is easy to suspect too. Can one argue that since it worked locally, Pharo is not the problem? The little bit that I know of cifs is not encouraging. It sounds as though things moved from an easily killed process into the kernel which shows an almost Windows-like unwillingness to shut down when it cannot see servers. I have found numerous reports of problems copying large files over cifs, and I have enountered them too. Bill

[Pharo-project] Starting out: db and gui recommendation

I am a Java & .Net application programmer who has flirted with Smalltalk for a long time without doing the "deep dive" to really understand it. Pharo and Seaside are making me think that everything is coming together now for another try. That and some micro-ISV ambitions to give me a real reason to write some code outside of work. For my type of project I really need a db package and a gui package. That leads to the questions: 1. Right now, is SqeakDBX my best choice for a db interface? Sqlite is my db of choice for the project I have in mind. 2. For the UI, I've been reading about the choices and I'm having a hard time finding a currently supported project. Do I go with polymorph by default? For the UI, what about "self-hosting" a Seaside instance and doing the UI in the browser? Ie, the app starts a Seaside server and opens a browser window pointed at the apps main window (home page). Can that be done? Is it a good idea? I hope you can give me some direction. I like the direction of Pharo and Seaside is just plain cool. I want to do this to get my head outside the coding box I'm kind of stuck in. And have some fun. Thanks for any help, Rick

Hi list, I learned something fun today from a friend, how to make Pharo produce random garbage! Make a class AC which is defined as: Object subclass: #AC instanceVariableNames: 'a' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'OB-Standard-Browsers' Then you make a second class AB defined as: Object variableByteSubclass: #AB instanceVariableNames: '' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'OB-Standard-Browsers' Then you make accessors for 'a' in AC Now execute: AB superclass: AC And then you do "AB new a" which gives you back random data.
