[Pharo-project] Understanding Morphic programming
by Alex Schenkman Nov. 12, 2009

Nov. 12, 2009

Hello list: I've read *"Squeak by Example"* and looked at some Morphic tutorials and example Morphs. I still don't understand how to organize my code with Morphic, =( 1) How should I separate the model from the graphical representation? Object subclass: #Person instanceVariableNames: 'name address email' Morph sublcass: #PersonMorph instanceVariableNames: 'person' The morph can then show and update the model when changed. 2) What happens if the model is changed by another class. How does the morph gets notified? What is the preferred approach? Thanks in advance!

[Pharo-project] A programming conference made for you
by Hernan Wilkinson Nov. 11, 2009

Nov. 11, 2009

Do you want to know how Object-oriented programming was originated? Would you like to personally meet one of those crazy people who revolutionized the computing world in Xerox Parc together with the Turing Award Alan Kay in the 70âs? Then you must come to Smalltalks 2009 and attend Dan Ingallsâ talk â40 years of Fun with Computersâ and the Q&A session âA fireside chat with Dan Ingallsâ. Do you want to know whatâs the latest trend in object oriented research? Then you must come to Smalltalks 2009 and attend Stephane Ducasseâs presentation âI have a dream... letâs make it come trueâ; and Alex Warthâs âImplementing programming languages for fun and profit with OMetaâ. Are you interested in understanding a little bit more about metaprogramming and what itâs used for? Do you want to understand what it means that an environment is âMetacircularâ? You donât feel at home with multiple inheritance? Do you think that Java or .Net interfaces are not enough? Do you feel iffy about mix-ins and think that thereâs got to be a better way to share code? Then you must come to Smalltalks 2009 and attend Jorge Ressiaâs âGlamourâ and âHelvetiaâ, and also Diego Geffnerâs âImproving Smalltalk development toolsâ. Have you ever wondered how an object database works and how different it is from a relational database â are they faster or slower? I donât want to sound repetitive but I just canât help it: You must come to Smalltalks 2009!!! James Foster will give âIntroduction to GemStoneâ and a one-day tutorial dedicated to this topic. You cannot miss it!. Have you ever wondered if it is possible to control hardware in real time with objects and a dynamic languages? Hmmmâ¦So thereâs no way out but to attend Smalltaks 2009 and check out Gonzalo Zabalaâs talk on âPhysical EToysâ and Andres Otaduyâs on âRul@ Systemâ. Are you doubtful about the possibility of designing and writing good genetic algorithms or mathematical models with objects? If math is your thing you must come to Smalltalks 2009 and attend Maximiliano Tabacmanâs talk on âGenetic Algorithm Frameworkâ and Leandro Canigliaâs on âHomological Algebra in Smalltalkâ. Are you interested in getting familiar with the implementation details of an object-oriented Virtual Machine or knowing how safe they are? hehe, we also have two talks in store for you! âVirtual Machine, Invisible Machineâ by Andrés Valloud (programmer of the fastest Smalltalk VM in existence) and âSecurity on JIT VMsâ by Gerardo Richarte (a leading security â or insecurity? â expert) Are you oriented toward software quality? Do you feel that TDD and agility rules? Again... I donât mean to drag on it but youâve got to come to Smalltalks 2009! and check out Tim Mackinnonâs talk on âAgile Planningâ and âExpressive Testingâ and also Nicolas Chillo and Gabriel Burnsteinâs on âMutation Testingâ. Are you tired of stopping and restarting your web application every time you modify it? Do you think that thereâs got to be a simpler way to do it? Are you done with recompiling your Java application or your ObjectiveC to be able to see a little change youâve made in your iPhone application? You must come to Smalltalks 2009 and attend German Arduinosâ talk on âSWTâ, Santiago Robles and Lautaro Fernándezâ âMeteorid: A real MVC for the Webâ and Esteban Lorenzanoâs talk âSmalltalk in the pocket: Building applications for the iPhoneâ. Or maybe you are not into talks, you get drowsy when you listen to people talking all day long, you feel good when it comes to action, to coding, building real things and contribute them with the community? Or perhaps youâve always heard about Smalltalk but never had the time or the support to get started... hmmâ¦I donât know... you can come to Smalltalks 2009 on Saturday and participate in the Pharo Sprint! An all-day programming session meant to improve and expand Pharo, an open-source Smalltalk. Have you been told â and did you believe â that dynamic languages are no good when it comes to developing large applications, or that Smalltalk is only used for teaching at universities? Well, youâd better attend Smalltalks 2009 and check out Maximiliano Tabacmanâs âXTrade â Risk and Yield Analysisâ, Félix Madrirâs âExpeccoâ and José Brettiâs âiBizLogâ. Are User interfaces, 3D graphics etc. your choice? We also have a treat for you... Adrian Somaâs âA visual environment to develop softwareâ, Juan Vuletichâs âCuis and Morphic 3â, Andres Fortierâs âDeveloping a 3D Engine: A Neophyteâs Experienceâ and Travis Griggsâ â#{Open.Source.Graphics} bindTo: {Cincom.Smalltalk}â. Do you feel itâs time to get an iPod? Do you want to give a digital camera to your girlfriend/boyfriend or your mom?...Easy, just join Smalltalks programming contest, youâll have a blastâ¦and if you donât win anything or you didnât make it, you can attend Carlos Ferroâs (programmer of the contest) talk âSmalltalks 2009 Coding Contestâ in which heâll explain how it was developed. And if youâre teaching object-oriented programming and want to collect some info, teaching materials, or you are feeling like sharing your experiences and your doubts with other teachers, you must come to Smalltalks 2009 and check out Nicolás Páez âTeaching Object-Oriented Programming with Smalltalk, and Agile Practicesâ, or spend a few minutes with Stephane Ducasse who will share with us the stuff he used for teaching objects. Are you tired of reading this neverending email? Did you have fun reading it? Do you want to be a part of a conference made by programmers and for programmers, with more than 400 registered people already, having fun and learning in the process? youâve got to come to Smalltalks 2009!!! :-) Register for free at www.fast.org.ar The conference will be held from Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st November. You can check out the âTalksâ section on our website, youâll have a great time for sure. Schedule will be available soon. Smalltalks 2009 Organization Committee For questions, send an email to info(a)fast.org.ar -------------------- This mails was first writting in Spanish and sent to many argentine programming lists. It cause a great effect because it made the registered number go from 320 to 411in just one day... we wanted to share it with you...

[Pharo-project] SystemVersion
by Michael Roberts Nov. 10, 2009

Nov. 10, 2009

Hi, now that we have multiple branches & image types I want to improve the publishing of test results. I'm lacking a neat way to get the image type and branch number. I don't really want to parse the image file name. Seems the best thing to use is: SystemVersion current version. Is there anything else? results: Pharo Core 1.0 --> 'Pharo1.0rc1' Pharo Core 1.1 --> 'Pharo1.1a Pharo 1.0 --> 'Pharo1.0rc1' We could add some state to SystemVersion, e.g #imageType, #branch, or we agree on a convention for #version that can easily be parsed. What do you think? thanks, Mike
