[Pharo-project] ImageReadWriter class>>formFromStream:
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Nov. 16, 2009

Nov. 16, 2009

Hello all, I have a crude example of something I want to do with gnuplot, and started looking at reading images from binary streams. Looking at ImageReadWriter class>>formFromStream:, I see things I do not like, but I am not sure how to fix them. First, on a failure to find a matching reader, it sends #close to the stream. I don't think that is its job, or if nothing else, there should be a #formFromStream:onError: block that would allow overrides of that behavior. Second, it uses #reset to go back up to allow the selected reader to have a fresh start after it assumes responsibility for reading the format. #position: would be a better choice, to return to the position at the start of the method (not necessarily the beginning of the stream). If a positionable stream is too much to ask, then the code should be changed to allow the read to pick up where the format test left off. Another option would be to use something that I built in Dolphin a while back: it puts a wrapper around a stream to absorb a #reset (I had the same problem) and then delegates to the "real" stream from the point it left off. In my current situation, I should be able to get away with hard-coding the reader class. Bill

[Pharo-project] MailMessage
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Nov. 16, 2009

Nov. 16, 2009

Hello all, I am looking for a way to format text in email. Html comes to mind (yes, I hate those emails too, but it would work and the recipients don't know any better<g>), as does attaching a file with the data. I recently had to switch smtp servers, and for whatever reason, can no longer send html email. The server says it accepted it, but the mail is never delivered; send plain text through it, and it works. It could simply be that the server wants no part of html email, but it would be nice to repeat the test with another client, and/or try attachments as a solution to my problem. I found MailMessage, and could not figure out how to set the recipient. After some searching, I found 151 on Mantis; it is a five year old fix from Frank Shearer for adding recipients. If I had to guess, things are still broken, but I will try it and see what happens. Sending this now while I'm thinking about it. If anybody knows a way around my current problems, please don't feel that you would be cheating me out of the fun of solving it myself :) Bill

[Pharo-project] slow method editor on syntax problems
by Johan Brichau Nov. 16, 2009

Nov. 16, 2009

Hi everyone, Editing becomes very slow very rapidly when some (syntax) errors are present in the edited method. It suffices to have a couple of undefined variables to make the text editor take 1 second to display a typed character. Quite annoying... I have not yet investigated the issue but since I guess I must not be the only one to see this happen maybe someone has some thoughts or is already on the issue (although I could not find an issue on the tracker). I am working with the latest (1.0rc) image. cheers! ---------------------------- Johan Brichau johan.brichau(a)uclouvain.be

[Pharo-project] Status about compiler _ changes
by Lukas Renggli Nov. 16, 2009

Nov. 16, 2009

As far as I remember from the other mail-thread there was consensus to allow underscores in identifiers and get rid of underscores in assignments. What is unclear for me is how we want to proceed and when to integrate it? 1. Do we just change the scanner for 1.1 without fallback? 2. Do we add a setting (fix the existing setting) so that the scanner can be changed on demand? I prefer 1, because it is simpler and does not allow the system to be in an inconsistent state. 2 is more convenient for people, because they can change the setting to load old code, fix the code and change the setting back. Potentially that leaves the system in an inconsistent state though. Lukas -- Lukas Renggli http://www.lukas-renggli.ch

[Pharo-project] Trailer format
by Hernán Morales Durand Nov. 16, 2009

Nov. 16, 2009

Hi all, Possibly this is a bug. To reproduce it download a Pharo-Core (I'm using #11045), update from servers and evaluate: CompiledMethod allInstances first getSource asString if you see something like the following result, some things could be wrong: '(firstCollection at: index) equals: a. self assert: (secondCollection at: index) equals: b.] ' because that isn't a message pattern. The compiled method instance is (BlockClosure>>#newProcess "a CompiledMethod(1962)") and the source string is in PharoV10.sources, but #fileIndexFromSourcePointer: is answering "2" which is the changes file and should answer "1"... someone with a better understanding of sources arithmetic may comment. Cheers, Hernán

[Pharo-project] broken package browser
by Tudor Girba Nov. 16, 2009

Nov. 16, 2009

The package browser is broken in the 10495 dev image. For some reason, the cmdFactories array contained nil objects, so I had to patch it: scanNodeCommands: ann (cmdFactories select: [:ea | ea notNil and: [ea takesNodes]]) do: [:ea | ann addFactory: ea] I am not sure whether the problem is really in OB or in the image. Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com "Obvious things are difficult to teach."

Hi, http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=1450 I find annoying that the content of Blocks are not displayed when debugging. So by adding this last line, I can see the content without variable names (but that's ok to me) BlockClosure>>printOn: aStream aStream nextPutAll: '[closure] in '. outerContext printOn: aStream. aStream cr; nextPutAll: self decompile printString. What do you think of it ? Has the decompile method some limitations that will prevent to use it for such a usage ? A variation (second file): BlockClosure>>printOn: aStream aStream nextPutAll: self decompile printString. aStream nextPutAll: ' in '. outerContext printOn: aStream. that gives by inspecting [1000 factorial]: {[1000 factorial]} in UndefinedObject>>DoIt --- When it's not very nice is when inspecting: [:x :y | | temp | 1 + x@y. ^temp] {[:t1 :t2 | | t3 | 1 + t1 @ t2. ^ t3]} in UndefinedObject>>DoIt so here maybe the first version is better. Last point, I don't know how to get the real variable names and also how to remove the code formatting, but that's details. Thanks -- Cédrick
