[Pharo-project] [ANN] Trax downloads
by Stephen Pair March 11, 2010

March 11, 2010

I have made the source code (as well as a pre-loaded image) for Trax available here: http://squeak.pairhome.net/trax Trax is a general object versioning system for Squeak. As of right now, I've only tried to run it in Squeak 3.9. It also depends on the pinesoft widgets. If anyone is interested in porting this forward to any other version of squeak, let me know. Regarding the extension of Trax to store Monticello packages, I had considered storing individual methods in the repository instead of MC packages, but always felt that computing the SHA-1 on potentially a large number of methods when committing a package would be prohibitively expensive (but would have clear space advantages because new versions of packages might only change a few methods). Due to the interest in doing that by someone conversing with me off-list, I reconsidered. Then it occurred to me that you could use the SHA-1 as the source pointer for methods and compute it at the time a method is saved. It also means that you could discard the sources and changes files and simply use a Trax repository for storing method source code. Furthermore, it opens up the possibility of committing objects to a repository that capture and create a content based address (a SHA-1) to the entire bundle of source code in an image. If anyone is interested in working on such an experiment, let me know. - Stephen

[Pharo-project] Add Alien in 1.1 (Issue 1360)
by Torsten Bergmann March 11, 2010

March 11, 2010

Hi Marco, what is the status for http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=1360 ? We should really move this forward for integration, especially since your Alien work was done based on Win32VM 3.11.5 and we now have 3.11.8 already... [Pharo-project] GSoC idea: Brainstorming portal for better community decision process
by Janko Mivšek March 11, 2010

March 11, 2010

Dear Smalltalkers, Becasue we have quite some problems in a community with seeking a consensus on important questions, from organization ones and on, I came to idea to build a tool for help. And a GSoC project can be an ideal opportunity to build such a tool. What do you think? Here is a description: Brainstorming portal for better community decision process ========================================================== Create a web portal for brainstorming sessions/meetings to get ideas and answers to important questions in Smalltalk community. Portal should allow on-line to: 1. brainstorm the ideas 2. vote to get-out the best ideas 3. seek consensus 4. analyze - report On-line session/meeting should look like a Skype session together with a brainstorming portal, from collecting ideas to a final decision proposal. Example of such session can be a Squeak Oversight Board meeting or planning session for a new Smalltalk project. Or some broader session in the community, like on a question how to organize better. Some important concepts: * anonymity of idea proposers * associations: proposers see the ideas of anonymous others to facilitate an association for proposing an even better idea * seeking consensus to avoid 51/49% decisions but to come closer to 100% agreement on important ideas. Technical details * a web application for gathering brainstormed ideas in real-time (using Ajax and Comet technology). * voting system with appropriate algorithms * analytics with on-line graphs and reports on paper/PDF * installation on a publicly available hosting server Benefits to the Student * getting insight into group dynamics of Smalltalk community and in general * gaining knowledge of modern web technologies in Smalltalk and in general Benefits to the Community Better community decision process by getting the best ideas from the members while on the other side avoiding stalemates so frequent in Smalltalk community those days Best regards Janko -- Janko Mivšek AIDA/Web Smalltalk Web Application Server http://www.aidaweb.si

[Pharo-project] Pharo Win32 VM update (3.11.8)
by Torsten Bergmann March 11, 2010

March 11, 2010

Based on the Squeak Win32 VM update from Andreas (see [1]) I created an update for the Pharo Win32 VM which you can either download directly [2] or from the pharo download page [3]. This VM also includes the fix from Juan so the white rectangles should never show up again when dragging a browser in Pharo 1.1. The full pharo installer for Pharo 1.0 (setup_pharo1.0-10508-rc2dev10.01.2.exe) does not yet contain the 3.11.8 VM since we dont have a new image - so no reason to regenerate the setup. As soon as this is the case I will include it there or any newer VM release. Bye T. [Pharo-project] How I build squeak-vm with FT2Plugin on Linux
by Torsten Bergmann March 11, 2010

March 11, 2010

Hey - you can now print yourself a certificate! See [1] >Can we merge our respective posts and put this on the Pharo wiki ? Why, I would put it on squeakvm.org if the documentation there is not up to date. Just ask David T. Lewis or post to the vm-dev list so your blog posts can be linked/included. >Do you know if there's an equivalent tutorial for windows ? Yes, again see http://www.squeakvm.org/win32/ >I will try with the svn trunk. On windows there are two ways: 1. Using SVN trunk, the squeakvm.org description and the vmmaker metacello config. 2. easily grab the zipped sources of the latest release without regenerating using VMMaker. (Andreas released version 3.11.8 yesterday, see [2]). First is more fun, second is easier. Note that you always get a Squeak VM. If you want to build a Pharo VM you have to additionally exchange ressources (icons, version info) to get the same results as the one I prepared for the pharo download page. BTW: I will build a new Pharo win VM based on 3.11.8 this week and will upload it to gforge similar to 2. Bye T. [Pharo-project] [Pharo Project] Installer / Installer Monticello
by Norberto Manzanos March 11, 2010

March 11, 2010

I found some bugs in Installer and InstallerMonticello packages. Is this the properly forum to report them? If not, sorry for bother you. InstallerMonticello >>mcDetectFileBlock: The detection is made with #beginsWith:, but if you have two different packages which begins with the same string, it would detect a wrong package. Reeplaced by #copyUpToLast: $- InstallerMonticello >>mcSortFileBlock If the file has no number (it could happen, yes, and it happened to me with a file create by MonticelloConfiguration, which I didn't remember it existed) the files collection is sorted wrongly, since #asInteger will answer nil. Replaced #asInteger by #asNumber I made other modifications, but I'm not sure they are part of the developing plan of the package. Errors are logued only with an output on the Transcript, so it's very difficult to separate errors form manu other messages shown there. I add a #logErr: method which adds the string to a new instance variable in. I attached the package.
