[Pharo-project] A small idea how to get closer to hardware with small efforts :)
by Igor Stasenko April 8, 2010

April 8, 2010

Hello again, it is about running a native code , stored in compiled methods. All we need is: a) allow code execution for object memory. On most platforms this is trivial - just pass additional flags to virtual memory allocation functions. b) add a single primitive 'call a native code' c) use a special compiled method trailer, which will store the native code inside itself Then we could place any native code inside a compiled method and use a single primitive to run this code. This is quite simple thing, given that both pharo and squeak adopted method trailers, so a primitive, before running the code, needs few checks: - a method's trailer format is valid (we could reserve a terminal byte value for that) - a native code, placed inside a method trailer is targeted for same platform as currently running on if not, then primitive will simply fail, and interpreter will run the method's bytecode, which , depending on a situation, can check if it can recompile the code (if platform doesn't match) or use a workaround. The only limitation of such approach, that native code, placed in compiled method should be relocate-agnostic, i.e. never use absolute jumps, only relative ones and so on. Also, we could force, that code using a specific calling convention, so it will be easy to fetch values from stack and other useful stuff from interpreter/object memory (like passing an interpreterProxy pointer). This could be a good answer in generating a trampoline code for FFI/Alien on the fly. What you think? -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

[Pharo-project] Show Actions of a SystemWindow: bug?
by Carla F. Griggio April 8, 2010

April 8, 2010

Hello! I was fooling around with the latest rc3 image and I tried to use the "show actions" option in the menu of a SystemWindow and got this: *MessageNotUnderstood: ToolSet class>>openMessageList:name:autoSelect:* ToolSet class(Object)>>doesNotUnderstand: #openMessageList:name:autoSelect: SystemWindow(Morph)>>showActions [] in ToggleMenuItemMorph(MenuItemMorph)>>invokeWithEvent: BlockClosure>>ensure: CursorWithMask(Cursor)>>showWhile: ToggleMenuItemMorph(MenuItemMorph)>>invokeWithEvent: ToggleMenuItemMorph(MenuItemMorph)>>mouseUp: ToggleMenuItemMorph(MenuItemMorph)>>handleMouseUp: MouseButtonEvent>>sentTo: ... This is the code in SystemWindow>>showActions: showActions "Put up a message list browser of all the code that this morph would run for mouseUp, mouseDown, mouseMove, mouseEnter, mouseLeave, and mouseLinger. tk 9/13/97" | list cls selector adder | list := SortedCollection new. adder := [:mrClass :mrSel | list add: (MethodReference new setStandardClass: mrClass methodSymbol: mrSel)]. "the eventHandler" self eventHandler ifNotNil: [list := self eventHandler methodRefList. (self eventHandler handlesMouseDown: nil) ifFalse: [adder value: HandMorph value: #grabMorph:]]. "If not those, then non-default raw events" #(#keyStroke: #mouseDown: #mouseEnter: #mouseLeave: #mouseMove: #mouseUp: > #doButtonAction ) do: [:sel | cls := self class whichClassIncludesSelector: sel. cls ifNotNil: ["want more than default behavior" cls == Morph ifFalse: [adder value: cls value: sel]]]. "The mechanism on a Button" (self respondsTo: #actionSelector) ifTrue: ["A button" selector := self actionSelector. cls := self target class whichClassIncludesSelector: selector. cls ifNotNil: ["want more than default behavior" cls == Morph ifFalse: [adder value: cls value: selector]]]. *ToolSet openMessageList: list name: 'Actions of ' , self printString > autoSelect: false* Shouldn't the last line be MessageSet openMessageList: list name: 'Actions of ' , self printString autoSelect: nil ? I tried it and it seemed to work OK, although I never tried that option before so I don't know what was it's original behaviour. Cheers! Carla.

[Pharo-project] [Preview] Help System with new model
by Torsten Bergmann April 8, 2010

April 8, 2010

Hi, sorry for the delay on the help system - but time is rare these days. I know some of you are impatient - therefore I've commited my restructured code for the help system for you to look what is coming - even when it is not fully finished. But the restructured new model is now in place - I have to add more tests and adapt the "help on the help system" to document my ideas. I also want to work on compatibility with Squeak as the first version had. Currently the new stuff only work in Pharo. What is new =========== While we had 3 model classes in my initial version (and after Dannys additions even more classes) I now reduced the model to a very, very simple approach with just one model class. We now have a HelpBrowser that is "just" displaying topics. A topic (see class HelpTopic) is - providing a title and optionally an icon - able to have subtopics, - provides contents (that is displayed be the browser), - can be identified by a unique key (so we can later open the help browser on a specific topic from within other tools) You can create help topics from each and anything. To try it out just load the baseline (in Pharo 1.0 or 1.1): -------------------------------------------- Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfHelpSystem'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfHelpSystem) project version: '1.0-baseline') load -------------------------------------------- You can open the help browser from the world tool menu or via code: HelpBrowser open You can open the help browser on any object that is able to be converted into a help topic (via method #asHelpTopic). So you can write for instance: HelpBrowser openOn: Integer opening a short API help/system reference on the Integer class. The above expression is the short form for: HelpBrowser openOn: (SystemReference forClass: Integer) If you want you can include the subclasses: HelpBrowser openOn: (SystemReference hierarchyFor: Integer) or even methods HelpBrowser openOn: (SystemReference hierarchyWithMethodsFor: Integer) You can browse the whole system reference documentation using: HelpBrowser openOn: SystemReference But these are only a few examples what we can extract from the system. However - the major goal is NOT an API browser, the idea is to provide a simple architecture to provide browsable help contents depending on the context. For instance it should also be possible to use the help system to provide end user help on any commercial application that is written with Pharo. As I said you can convert any text data into topics to be displayed by the help system: the browser is able to open on anything that is convertable to a root topic using #asHelpTopic. More on this later. When you open the help browser it provides help for the whole system, so HelpBrowser open is the same as HelpBrowser openOn: SystemHelp which internally uses the class CustomHelp and subclasses to provide written text and API help to form a system wide help system. If you want you can also load "Metacello-Help" and "Squeak-Help" from the http://www.squeaksource.com/HelpSystem repository to see how the new topics are automatically used when they were just loaded. Yes, I would like to see a richer text support (using markup language) and written text documentation accessible directly from within the image. But the first step was to get a simple model, the next step would be to see if the extension mechanism is good enough (CustomHelp, HelpBuilder with own builders, ...) Some more notes on the architecture and extension ideas: ======================================================== 1. the model as I said before is now reduced to a single class (HelpTopic) 2. When you open the help browser on an object the method #asHelpTopic is sent to the object by the browser to get the root node of the displayed topic hierarchy: HelpBrowser openOn: myObject Typically the object does not convert itself to a help topic structure, usually it dispatches to a builder (see HelpBuilder and subclasses) who does all this. So the help text can be already in the image even when the help system itself is NOT YET THERE/LOADED and if you want to provide help text in whatever form you are not dependent on the help system itself!!! Later a builder can extract and convert the data. You can have builders for anything - even a builder who gets informations from the web or hard disk. But note: if you want to have your own help shown up in the standard help then you have to at least use the "CustomHelp" subclass mechanism. 3. The help browser is a simple tree view and is currently limited to ASCII text. One step in the future could be to provide a "contentType" (similar to MIME) to support other content types (for instance active morphs displayed in clean up book morphs, HTML help with scamper in the help browser, ...) 4. I dont expect the basic model to change much further - maybe Take care: all of this is still unfinished but in a usable state. The "Help on Help" is not yet updated. The tests are not reviewed, just brouht to green. So you have to rely on the implementation, all the informations in this mail or directly ask questions. Bill, I haven't followed your trials and tribulations with libraries, but I do know that starting with version 3.11-3 of the Squeak vm(see 'http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/vm-dev/2009-September/003206.ht…'), the naming conventions for dynamically loaded files was changed to use a _leading_ so. instead of a trailing .so.... [Pharo-project] Handle Close Event in Image - necessary for 1.0?
by Torsten Bergmann April 7, 2010

April 7, 2010

>So...which is the working Windows VM we should use for 1.0 ? the one before >4 version. Last one before this change was introduced was the 3.11.8 Squeak VM which I adapted for Pharo. You can download it from: https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/26654/PharoVM-Win32-3.11.8.zip However I still believe that fixing this in 1.0 would not only be a plus - it will also prevent questions regarding this new problem since people WILL use newer VM's after the first 1.0 release of Pharo and then instantly step into the problem! And it is not a Windows specific problem as Stef thinks it is. Bert requested John today (see [1]) to change the default for Mac too ... so if you upgrade your Mac VM for whatever reason (maybe to do 1.1 work or since you need a newer VM for a commercial project) then you will step into this with the 1.0 image. Guess what people think when Pharo tries to bring Squeak to a better quality level and then would not be able to close the system as usual after upgrading to a newer and better VM. But maybe my expectations for a 1.0 release are too high... Bye T. Stef wrote >Because I would like to change the default color of comments. >Green is really ugly for the release. Please no! This is subject to personal taste. In most text editors and IDE's I know the comments are always green by default independent from language. So I would keep it since this is what is common in developer tools. Re: [Pharo-project] Redline Smalltalk

Hi, James - Bert Freudenberg forwarded this along to me, as I'm not on a Pharo mailing list. I think you know of my JSqueak project (a.k.a. Potato) -- a Squeak VM written in Java. The image that I used with it, is the same that I always use for this kind of experiment -- mini.image built in Squeak 2.2. The reason it is so cool is that it includes browser, editor, compiler, inspector debugger, and files -- everything you need for self-support. Plus it has the decompiler, and special temp-name hack, so you can actually browse sources with temp names before any file system works. My favorite thing about this image is that although it is only 600k, if you decompile all its sources, it comprises over 850k of Smalltalk, so it's like a compressed version of the sources with a full-function IDE thrown in for free ;-). As I said, the image is about 600k, of which 240k is code -- 202 classes (x2 if you count the metas) with 4590 methods. This should be a good guide for you in choosing classes to start with. You can actually run this image live in JSqueak on the web if you have Java installed and the planets are aligned correctly... http://Weather-dimensions.com/Dan/JSqueak.jnlp Another interesting statistic is that the Java .jar file is only 433k, including not only the VM, but also the entire image! This is possible because the image is so small that the pointers in it are mostly zeroes, so it compresses nicely. I just checked that this runs, and was happy to see that it putts along at 21 million bytecodes/sec on my laptop. I haven't looked recently, but I think you'll find Mini2.2.image or something like it in the same place where all the historical releases of Squeak are kept. Let me know if you can't find it. Have fun with your project! I hope this helps - Dan
