[Pharo-project] PharoTips architecture
by Mariano Martinez Peck May 16, 2010

May 16, 2010

Sorry Javier for "talking" too much about your project ;) I am just curious. 1) How to store tips? How are you going to store the tips? just class side variable with all stuff? 2) it would be great to be able to give properties to each tip. At least, to tell each tips in which context it should appear (not mandatory). For example, the tip "Do you want to save your workspaces to disk and manage easily multiple of them? Check out "Tools" -> "ScriptManager?<http://code.google.com/p/pharo/w/edit/ScriptManager>" should appear when using a workspace. so...a Tip may be dispatched against zero or more contexts 3) Define contexts: only type of windows ? or also capture events. For example, I can define a context is when browsing a class. That would be cool. 4) How to intercept these "contexts" without changing the PharoCore? Is is possible right now? what about using Announcments ? It would be cool to have inside PharoCore a way to notify these kind of stuffs 5) This is related to 1) How can a package define its own tips ? Suppose the example I gave in 2) I want to put it in the package ScriptManaget-PharoTips. It would be great to be able to define them there and then somehow to register them in the PharoTip "database". Ok...sorry. I know I flow too much hahaha. I went beyond the simple tool you wanted to do. The thing is that I am really interesting in this project and I think having this would be great. Mariano

[Pharo-project] Making OCompletion work in Pharo 1.1
by Mariano Martinez Peck May 16, 2010

May 16, 2010

Hi Romain. I was testing a little OCompletion in Pharo 1.1 and I found a bug in ECUntypedModel >> initializeSelectors as it is doing: [ Smalltalk keysDo: [ :each | selectors add: (ECGlobalEntry contents: each type: #globalVar) ]. Smalltalk, SmalltalkImage and SystemDirectory were refectorized. Running OCompletion tests, I have one red. I changed to: [ Smalltalk environment keysDo: [ :each | selectors add: (ECGlobalEntry contents: each type: #globalVar) ]. (notice I added environment) and with this, the test is green and OCompletion seems to be working. What do you think? can I commit ? Cheers Mariano

[Pharo-project] Help testing Pharo 1.1 in big screens!
by Mariano Martinez Peck May 15, 2010

May 15, 2010

Hi folks. I re-try (yes, yes, I re-insist hahaha) to have a background picture for the PharoDev 1.1. The last time I tried, we had a problem with the picture because in big screens instead of making it bigger, it put it several times, or it cut it. Now, thanks to Gary, it should work well. So, if you are a lucky guy an have a big screen, can you please take the latests PharoCore 1.1 image, for example this: https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/26995/PharoCore-1.1-11357-UNSTABLE… How to test it ? - Download this in the same directory where the .image is: https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/26996/pharoBackground.png Then evaluate: World backgroundMorph: ((UITheme builder newAlphaImage: (ImageReadWriter formFromFileNamed: 'pharoBackground.png') help: nil) autoSize: false; layout: #scaled; lock) What to test ? - You should stretch the pharo image, make it very big, and the background picture should stretch also together with the image. - If you notice a performance decrease with it (I don't think so) - If you like it or not. - If the resolution is good enough in big screens Thanks! Mariano

[Pharo-project] Pharo tips
by Torsten Bergmann May 15, 2010

May 15, 2010

File in the attached #initialize method after loading http://www.squeaksource.com/PharoTips/PharoTips-Pocho.1.mcz Run PharoTipsMorph show Then you have: - a working Pharo version by using "IconicButton" - better back/forward icons - the text non-editable when you click on it - a different color according to Polymorph look (the old yellow color remind too much on the annoying web page security bar from Internet explorer) If we use it in a dev-image we should consider placing the logo at another location: |logo| logo := World submorphs detect: [:each | each isKindOf: ImageMorph]. logo bounds: (4@34 corner: 379@169) See attached screenshot. One thing that still strikes me is that it does not resize when the outside native window is resized - which is hard to do since there is not yet an event from the VM for that. (see [1]) Bye T. [Pharo-project] CPUWatcher
by Mariano Martinez Peck May 15, 2010

May 15, 2010

Hi folks. This is why I like writing in books/wikis, because I always learn :) Now I writing in the book about the Interrupt Key and I come up with this guy I was not even aware of: CPUWatcher. It seemss very cool and useful. However, I am using it wrong, or there is too much dust on it. I want to ask if I am using it well before debugging and try to make it work. As the class comment says, I tried to do this: CPUWatcher startMonitoring. "process period 20 seconds, sample rate 100 msec" And then I evaluated in a workspace: [ true ] whileTrue: [ 1+1 ] It should stop that process when it is using 80% of the CPU, but it doesn't. The process is never stop and the image freeze. I then tried: CPUWatcher startMonitoring. "process period 20 seconds, sample rate 100 msec" CPUWatcher current threshold: 0.3. "change from 80% to 30%" I have the same results... any hints? Cheers Mariano

[Pharo-project] CSS style for tables in http://book.pharo-project.org/
by Mariano Martinez Peck May 15, 2010

May 15, 2010

Hi (Doru?) I was just creating this page: http://book.pharo-project.org/book/TipsAndTricks/InterruptKey and seems there is no style for table, tr, td, etc. I checked with firebug and the html is correct. So I guess we could add style. I tried to go to the css component and check but it seems I don't have access. But that's better because I am horrible with css ;) Now I wonder...can we put style to tables? at least border ;) Maybe I did something wrong. Thanks mariano

I have just tested this thing about ExternalWebBrowser. Now I was thinking the use we can give to it. For example, what about (somehow) being able to automatically open a link in the browser. Suppose these exampels: - In the welcome workspace, we have a lot of links. It would be great to be able to doble click, ctrl + click, or something, that automatically opens the URL in a tab of the default external browser. - Automatically open the issue tracker in certain circumstances ? - If we include PharoTips, there are a lot of tips that include links. It would be cool to open them automatically. What do you think ? Cheers Mariano > > > > I haven't played with it more than that. However, you can try to put them there just to see if that's the problem. I think that at some point (depends on an order) the library is searched in the same place where you are calling from. So, yes, do a test, but just a test. It should work without doing that. How did you install FFI ? Which Pharo VM and image versions are you using ? Can anyone help? > > I would like too, but I don't have such library. I developed a wrapper for a Clibrary called OpenDBX using FFI. In our website, some people experimented similar problems. Please take a look to the title "Problems with Mac OS:" of the following link: http://www.squeakdbx.org/Compiling%20and%20installing%20OpenDBX I also cc'ed people that can help you. [Pharo-project] A remote workspace
by Geoffroy Couprie May 15, 2010

May 15, 2010

Hello, Following the discussion on VM remote administration ( http://lists.gforge.inria.fr/pipermail/pharo-users/2010-May/000268.html ), I started working on something like a remote workspace. So far, I'm able to connect to a VM running Pharo with netcat, and execute some code. It is not much, but it was fun to write, and I learned a lot of things :) Now, before I add new features, I feel I should ask if someone would be interested by this, and what use case you would imagine: -Connecting from another VM or sticking with netcat? -Remote debugging (might not be easy, but should be fun to do) -Sending commands to a lot of VMs at once (and querying status) -Multiple connections possibles? -Being able to save a session (like http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/ ) -Authentication/encryption? Is there a way to use openssl, or should I steal the 3DES code from RFB (it should be quick enough for text only communication)? Best regards, Geoffroy
