[Pharo-project] disabling ecompletion in PharoCore-1.1-11383

ecompletion does not show up in the preferences browser so I am at a loss to turn it off ... it is annoying enough that I've spent a fair amount of time cruising the image looking for a way to turn off a preference (plenty of protocol for getting the preference values...) and I've examined the every option in the preferences browser looking for an option that makes sense ... I know this is beta and unstable so put my complaint down to grouchiness:) maybe I will have found the magic by the time anyone can answer me:) Dale

Hi guys, Am I the only one who finds the ruby protocol for accessing collections richer at times? In Smalltalk, if ary is an array, how do I get ary without its last element? In Ruby, it's dead easy: ary[0..-2]. I can do that by heart after not having done any serious Ruby in a long time. In Smalltalk, I have to search through a long list of method names, because there are just so many possible names for the method. The point is: would it be totally out of reach to try and get a more concise and unified way to access sequenceable collections? I know I'm sort of asking for the slaughter of a holy cow: Smalltalk only has telling and easy message names all over. Or wait, does it? There's of course Class >> #methodName. And 2 @ 3 for points. Just to put something on the table, how about: (ary at: 1, -2) Or, without braces, if you don't mind the reversal: 1,-2 @ ary Or, consistent with current naming conventions: (ary from: 1 to: -2) Just my 2 cents, what do you think? [Pharo-project] pharo and stand along GUI projects

Hello, INRIA RMOD is looking for a full-time engineer for helping with Pharo development. As researchers, we need a really great system to explore new ideas with. The job of the engineer is to help us by improving the infrastructure we use for our work. What this of course means is that it's kind of a cool job: work in a research lab, but no paper writing, no teaching, no administration. In addition: - live in France (one hour from Paris, 1h20 from London, 35 min from Brussels) - try a lot of good beers (our office is just 10km from the border to Belgium) - french food - code all the day in Smalltalk and a bit of C Apparently from what the DHR services told us, the salary will depend on years of expertise and diplomas. We can think that 2700 Euros (before final taxes) should be a good working number for a candidate of the experience we are looking for. In France the employer pays already social security and pension. So the salary already includes lots (and lots) of deductions compared to e.g. a german brutto salary. Lille is an active city but not expensive (lot of students...), centrally located with good connections by train to everywhere (including CDG and Brussels airports). [Pharo-project] Minimal release images (currently 6.2MB)

Hi all, Here is the result of some more effort I put into creating small images from PharoCore. Running "ScriptLoader new cleanUpForProduction" in the latest PharoCore 1.1 you get an image that is 6.2 MB on disk. There are two goals for shrinking images: (i) sparing some megabytes makes a big difference if you run a lot of images on a server, also they start up much faster; (ii) modularization: being able to reliably unload packages forces us to cleanly package our code without unnecessary interdependencies. Note that after running #cleanUpForProduction, you need to close all windows, save the image, restart it, trigger a GC, and save the image again (because for instance the Mac host menu classes will only go away after a restart). In addition to #cleanUpForRelease the production cleanup does the following: - removing all tests and the SUnit test runner - removing all methods storing binary graphic resources (icons and fonts) - removing the help system and Mac host menu - changing all font selections to Accuny and deleting Deja Vu fonts - deleting the logo - deleting MC ancestry information - deleting ScriptLoader I made sure that these removals result in a clean system, that is, no undeclared and no obsolete classes.
