[Pharo-project] how to identify objects ? (hash?)
by Mariano Martinez Peck July 19, 2010

July 19, 2010

Hi folks. I have a simple question. Suppose I have a file in disk that has a "pointer" to an object X that is in the image. What can I store from X in the file? Two options: the address in memory or the hash. If I savethe address, the object X can be moved by the GC, and thus, the address can become incorrect in the file. I don't want to update the disk files in case objects are moved. If I save the hash of X, how can I then localize that object in memory? Hash is 12 bits...so it is not enough to find that object...(otherwise there would be only 4096 objects) So....the question is, what should I save from object X in the file and what should I do to be able to localize it, some time after (even when the X is moved by the GC). Sorry for my ignorance about the hash. Thank you very much in advance, Mariano

[Pharo-project] Fwd: [Pharo-users] Recent Submissions

Ben you should register to pharo-dev Give a way for people to be lazy 1- give them a way load simply your code Gofer new squeaksource: 'PharoTaskForces'; package: 'Tools-Browser'; load 2- publish your work in a separate package 3- propose a way to open it 4- Create a separate class so that we can play with it independently of the other and existing tools. They are quite small, and they represent simple catalog items with typical attributes (i.e. item number, name, rating, etc.). The element hierarchy looks something like this: <catalog> <status> </status> <products> <list> <product> <id></id> <name></name> <reviews> ... </reviews> <labels> .... <labels> <type></type> </product> </list> </products> </catalog> So, what I want to do is be able to demarshall <product> elements into a product object. I have seen plenty of examples of how to grab the content of all of the name elements, but none showing how to pull all of the sub-elements of a given element type into an object. [Pharo-project] XML Demarshalling
by Larry Gadallah July 19, 2010

July 19, 2010

Hi all: I am a noob searching for an example of how to demarshall a set of simple and complex XML nodes into an object using Pastell or something similar. I have found many examples of how to pick out all of the elements of a certain type into a collection, but I'm trying to grab the data from a mixed collection of (~20) elements that are children of a particular element type and unpack them into an object. Does anyone know of some good examples of how to do this using Pastell or something similar? [Pharo-project] Unicode everywhere
by Miguel Enrique Cobá MartÃnez July 19, 2010

July 19, 2010

This is a newbie question. I really don't understand the issue with Unicode and the image/vm/os in Pharo/SqueakVM/Linux,Windows. I searched the lists for references to utf-8 and the long discussions about leadingChar encodings convert*Encoding methods Strings WideStrings Text DisplayText WAKom and WAKomEncoded keyboard input text file input/output vm's -encoding -textenc options So, the people that know about this things, can you please give a newbie explanation about this. What is needed for we users to: 1. Input text by keyboard with accents (and maybe in the language of Mordor too) and they look not like a diamond with a ? sign in the image system browser. 2. This text be correctly send to a modern web browser and rendered in utf-8 encoding correctly. 3. Upload a java messages bundle (or a file with characters outside ASCII) with a web browser posted to a Seaside application, stored temporaly in disk on the server and processed correctly (by opening it with some FileStream class) inside the image. Or is this really hard to do and I'm asking for the imposible? I understand that there are performance issues with full unicode image/vm but supposing that premature optimization rule applies here, what we need to do to achieve this (utopian maybe) goal? Why the question, because I put some strings inside the image (they look fine as I type them). Then I used them to put labels in my Seaside app. In the image I typed and saw in a code browser: Búsqueda de información But the web browser (firefox) I see: Bsqueda de informacin If I change the web browser encoding to iso8859-1 I see it correctly. Now if I evaluate 'Búsqueda de información' convertToEncoding: 'utf-8' this gives: 'Búsqueda de información' and if I use this weird, uneditable by hand, string as the string for my Seaside app, I correctly see the string in the web browser: Búsqueda de información. So, I really don't understand. Should I always write my strings in the image as I want them, use convertToEncoding: method and use the output as if that were my string? Well, thanks for your answers. P.S. I am using pharo core 1.0, Seaside 2.8 and squeakvm version: 4.0.3-2202 #1 XShm Sat Apr 17 18:21:07 UTC 2010 gcc 4.4.3 in a 64 bit Debian Linux with full utf-8 locale: miguel@laptop:~/proyectos/azteca$ locale LANG=es_MX.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_TIME="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_MONETARY="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_NAME="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="es_MX.UTF-8" LC_ALL= Cheers -- Miguel Cobá http://miguel.leugim.com.mx

[Pharo-project] Are objects moved (changed the address in memory)?
by Mariano Martinez Peck July 19, 2010

July 19, 2010

Hi. Nebwie here. THe first question is if objects are moved (changed the address in memory) at runtime? I am 99% sure the answer is true. If so: 1) Who moves them ? the GC? 2) when ? agains which events, what triggers these movements? 3) why they are moved? to compact the memory ? why the memory needs to be compact? for arrays? 4) Is there a way to say "please, don't move this object X" ? what would be the problem of having a lot of these "non-moveable" objects? memory fragmentation ? If you can point me to the code also I would be happy. Thank you very much in advance, Mariano

[Pharo-project] Debug-it and external calls
by Schwab,Wilhelm K July 19, 2010

July 19, 2010

I often (not always??) find that using the Debug-it command and debugging into an external call (FFI) leads to a false claim of "Unable to find function address." Stepping over the call works; stepping into it make it look like it fails. I am curently using a 1.1 RC2 image and the 4.0.3 vm on Ubuntu. I cannot easily move the offending code to Windows, nor do I particularly care to do so (feels good<g>), and FFI is fairly uncommon in Squeak/Pharo. Can anyone else tinker with this to see if it is real? Bill

[Pharo-project] Deployment on Pharo
by nullPointer July 19, 2010

July 19, 2010

Excuse me for my poor english. I want implement a mechanism of deploy in Pharo. The objetive is obtain one file with VM and Image mergeds. I believe than in MACOS is easy, only is needed put the image file into the "VM" folder and create a zip with a link to APPs folder. In Windows the idea is merge VM and image in one file and create a classical windows installer. Exists some previous work do it for deployment? I see for example images "One click" for mac.
