[Pharo-project] Mac file names
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Aug. 13, 2010

Aug. 13, 2010

Hello all, I just realized that I am having all of the fun with approximately 3,000 infrared images. My boss should be able to share in the joy of eyeballing and annotating each and every one of these things ;) It's fairly safe: he's a good guy, and a good enough scientist to know that what I am doing really has to be repeated. Options include: (1) fix all of the file name manipulation to be Windows-friendly[*]; (2) create a Linux box he can use for the task; (3) let him run it on his mac at home. Will my Linux file names make sense to his mac? I never paid any attention to Microsoft's functions to get the Windows drive, and just hard-coded c: all over creation. On Linux, I have been coding a lot of references to things like /home/wks/2008/IR-data. Can his mac understand that? What would be required? Create an account for "me" to he would have the password (his computer, not my data, so that should be fine) and have him log in that way to run it? Bill [*] let's pass on that one

Aug. 13, 2010

I opened the ticket, check it at: http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=2658 Being that is my first one I'm not sure if I did all ok, please don't hesitate in correct me! :) The thing I don't understand is "publish in the repo PharoTaskForces", can you explain please? Cheers. [Pharo-project] How do take action before a morph closes
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Aug. 13, 2010

Aug. 13, 2010

Gary, all, My Polymorph-based image mask editing gizmo is taking shape. I easily set up a column of buttons to clear, save and toggle display of the mask. I had a pretty rough time making the toggle *work* but that was a logic error on my part. Next, I need to detect that a mask has been saved and apply it to a newly loaded image; I think I see how to do that. Another important feature would be to automatically save the mask rather than expecting the user to do that explicitly. How can I detect that the morph/panel is about to close and execute a command? If I wanted to do so, how could I detect that the mask has not been saved, and warn the user and/or veto closing the morph? For now I would be happy to just save the mask, but stopping something from closing will eventually arise. Bill

[Pharo-project] A little of documentation?
by Guillermo Polito Aug. 13, 2010

Aug. 13, 2010

Hi! I've just written this in some free minutes at work :P : http://book.pharo-project.org/book/table-of-contents/PharoTools/?_s=V-EPbS3… But I want to improve it a little more, like add the status for the tool for each pharo version, a brief description of what it does or contains, and whatever that is useful. So, could you throw me some info or links or something that helps? Next step for me is inspect the metacello configurations to create gofer scripts for each pharo version. Here's the list I made. Feel free to add things to the lists, comments... - OmniBrowser - AutomaticMethodCategorizer - ScriptManager - Shout - OCompletion - PharoNonCorePackages - NewInspector - RefactoringBrowser - Nile - ProfStef - Metacello Cheers, Guille

Hi guys the pharo web site does not support that yet :) but I would love to have some pictures of you because this is not that fun to talk daily with people when we do not even know their faces so we could start to build a pharo fun community. Let me know what you think. Stef

[Pharo-project] Instantiating an abstract class
by Alexandre Bergel Aug. 12, 2010

Aug. 12, 2010

Hi! Just wondering. What about redefining new into: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Behavior>>new "Answer a new initialized instance of the receiver (which is a class) with no indexable variables. Fail if the class is indexable." self isAbstractClass ifTrue: [ self error: 'An abstract class cannot be instantiated' ]. ^ self basicNew initialize -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This may break a lot of code however. [Pharo-project] MVP design question
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Aug. 12, 2010

Aug. 12, 2010

You might need to be familiar with Dolphin's MVP framework to care about this. It has long been accused of having a steep learning curve, but it also generates a lot of "This is great! Why did it seem so hard?" reactions. I certainly recall reacting that way, but like it enough that I want something at least close to it. Seaside's approach to components is interesting too, and it might be possible to strike a balance between the two approaches. Once I got the idea of MVP, I began to identify presenters with their contents. By that, I mean that I did not bother to name things like lastNamePresenter - the Presenter suffix is needless because the "presenterness" is clear from the context. The most common methods one writes are #createComponents, #createSchematicWiring (expressing interest in events triggered by components), and #model:. Dolphin's framework expects one to name view resources when adding sub-presenters to a composite presenter. It might be useful to map that to providing the instantiating selector (or optionally a closure) that can ultimately realize the correct view/morph. The resulting views/morphs could be specified in code or by some type of graphical editor. Object Arts did much the same thing in D6 when they moved away from serialized view resources to ones saved in class methods. I am more interested in being able to write clean code than I am in having a graphical editor, though ultimately both end up being "needed" (programmatic creation of views will indeed be needed to do some things, graphical editors are convenient and might be demanded by some potential users). IIRC, Gary did not think too much of my idea of having default models, but I like having working triads that can simply plug into a composite, or can be connected with a little work and value adapters. Any strong opinions? Bill
