[Pharo-project] Really funny bug... :(
by stephane ducasse Aug. 25, 2010

Aug. 25, 2010

Hi guys I was integrated the methodDictionary enh of levente. And after I integrated the addition of some methods into String. Then it seems that I got all the packages extending String dirty. I checked the changes and nothing special. The changed methods are not logged in the changeSorter. So may be the dictionary got rehashed, changed and all the methods went to get "changed". Strange. [Pharo-project] why are Bitmaps instanciated even in headless mode?
by Mariano Martinez Peck Aug. 25, 2010

Aug. 25, 2010

I took a dev image, and run them in two ways: the normal and headless. For each I did a: "Smalltalk garbageCollect. SpaceTally new printSpaceAnalysis" Normal one: Class code space # instances inst space percent Bitmap 3753 133 11099904 37.4 ByteString 2515 85110 6106378 20.6 CompiledMethod 19130 59452 3703463 12.5 Array 2176 77579 2561928 8.6 ...... Headless: Class code space # instances inst space percent ByteString 2515 85110 6106378 24.7 Bitmap 3753 126 6049208 24.5 CompiledMethod 19130 59452 3703463 15.0 Array 2176 77577 2561844 10.4 ...... So....even in headless mode, I have 133 instances of Bitmap, representing 24.5% of the memory.... Ok, 24.5 is better than 37.5, but I don't understand why Bitmap instances are created. Why they are needed ? is there a way to garbageCollect them? thanks Mariano

[Pharo-project] Fwd: About SPDF
by Torsten Bergmann Aug. 25, 2010

Aug. 25, 2010

>Hehe, too much legal terms to me.....What we could do? Can modify, >create a new package, etc? The license of SPDF was not open enough for me in the past - thats why I created the binding to the Haru PDF Library: http://www.squeaksource.com/HPDF.html http://libharu.sourceforge.net This requires FFI and an external shared library. If you want to have a Smalltalk only solution I think you have to digg in the PDF spec and write an own. Assumed you have lots of time to spend on bits and bytes and writing nice unit tests for PDF streams. Similar to iText for Java, this allows you change the license and block your government later ;), see the story of Bruno Lowagie [1] There are also other PDF alternatives beside HPDF and SPDF (see [2]) Bye Torsten [1] http://techcrunch.com/2009/05/20/open-source-developer-intends-to-block-bel… [2] http://www.seaside.st/documentation/pdfs -- GRATIS für alle GMX-Mitglieder: Die maxdome Movie-FLAT! [Pharo-project] Why is readStream on SequenceableCollection and not on Collection?
by Bart Gauquie Aug. 25, 2010

Aug. 25, 2010

Dear list, is there a specific reason readStream is defined on SequenceableCollection and not on Collection? I want to for instance stream over a Set (in a non determined order). I tried to do readStream on a Set, but got an error that copyFrom:to: was not defined on Set; so: ReadStream>>on: aCollection I think should read: ReadStream>>on: aSequenceableCollection Or should I always use: collect: select: detect: protocols? Any thoughts on this? Kind Regards Bart -- imagination is more important than knowledge - Albert Einstein Logic will get you from A to B. I have no idea. But I did a quick search and methods like flushCache, numArgs:,value:, isKeyword, cull:, etc, seems more from Selector Cheers mariano > > Stef > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > > Pharo-users mailing list > > Pharo-users(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr > > http://lists.gforge.inria.fr/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pharo-users > > > > > > -- > Best regards, > Igor Stasenko AKA sig. > > _______________________________________________ > Pharo-users mailing list > Pharo-users(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr > http://lists.gforge.inria.fr/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pharo-users >

[Pharo-project] #hasClassNamed
by Torsten Bergmann Aug. 25, 2010

Aug. 25, 2010

Dont know if this is something we should fix: Smalltalk hasClassNamed: 'Object' -> true Smalltalk hasClassNamed: #Object -> true but Smalltalk hasClassNamed: Object -> false Last one may be confusing and could be solved by adding an additional #asString so it returns true too.
