[Pharo-project] call for green tests
by Stéphane Ducasse Aug. 31, 2010

Aug. 31, 2010

Hi guys We should improve. One way is to make sure that all the tests are green. It will help when integrating fixes. So I need your help. DateAndTimeTest (Sean can you have a look?) and a couple of others need our care. The tests of TimeStamp are red but we should remove this class from the system. Now nothing is simple and I need help here too because MC logic rely on it. Tx! Stef

[Pharo-project] Fwd: [Moose-dev] [seed] New project around the kernel
by Stéphane Ducasse Aug. 31, 2010

Begin forwarded message: > From: Nicolas Paez <nicopaez(a)gmail.com> > Date: August 31, 2010 5:02:04 PM GMT+02:00 > To: moose-dev(a)iam.unibe.ch, pharo-project-request(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr > Subject: [Moose-dev] [seed] New project around the kernel > Reply-To: Moose-related development <moose-dev(a)iam.unibe.ch> > > Hi, I am working in the RMoD team (INRIA) in a project called Seed. One of the tasks of the project is to identify those mandatory classes that should be part of Pharo kernel. Currently, Pharo kernel has some "unhappy dependecies". We are using Moose + Glamour to create a tool (a browser) that help up with this task. The idea is to start by loading in our browser the classes used in the SpecialObjectsArray and then iterate to add dependencies incrementally. This way we will be able to detect smells and "blacklist" methods we don't want to be part of our kernel. > > During this days we will have a working version of our browser to start the analysis. > If you want to take a look, search for Seed on SqueackSource. > We will be sharing our findings in the Pharo mailing list. > > > > > Regards, > NicoPaez. > > _______________________________________________ > Moose-dev mailing list > Moose-dev(a)iam.unibe.ch > https://www.iam.unibe.ch/mailman/listinfo/moose-dev

Re: [Pharo-project] What are you using to write reports? Lyx!

HTML makes a nice way to scroll through data. As for connecting with OpenOffice or (I can't say it<g>), I find > LaTeX to be much nicer to use. It has a steep learning curve, but the view from near the top is pretty good. If you find LaTex has a steep learning curve I suggest you give Lyx a try. I write everything in either vi or Lyx. I use Linux but Lyx can also be found on Windows and Mac. By the way, when I write the external documentation (using Lyx of course) for Squeak/Pharo packages that I write where do I put this documentation? Regards, Ralph Boland

Re: [Pharo-project] Inter-image communication
by Ralph Boland Aug. 31, 2010

Aug. 31, 2010

Some time back I posted (to Squeak) the idea of doing development using two images. One image would be your development image, i.e. the image you would eventually release as your product. It would be a restricted version of the image you have in Squeak/Pharo now. The other image would be your software development tool image, roughly analogous to what the Eclipse development environment is. The advantage of such a set up would be that changes to your development image would not blow up your tool image. You could also leave out anything from your development image you didn't actually need in you product such as perhaps editors, debuggers, windows, etc. depending upon what software your product actually needed. I have no plans to actually try this anytime soon. But I am wondering: Would RemoteSmalltalk be helpful in (be a foundation for) creating such a utility? [Pharo-project] problems with 12119 and 12120
by Stéphane Ducasse Aug. 31, 2010

Aug. 31, 2010

I was trying to clean a bit MethodReference and now I broke the merge in Monticello. Now I get all the method with revision changed So what do we do? The changes were to help the integration of the new recentMessages changes 1- rollback because I do not have the time to dive into this part of the system. We need a better and cleaner infrastructure with a real declarative code model and not a hack like methodReference and tweak it to get comments and class definition on it. I hate that we have so lousy and brittle foundation 2- let it and try to understand why it breaks. But I have no time (now this stuff will stay in my mind until I check -grgrg). Stef

[Pharo-project] About the icons
by Fernando olivero Aug. 31, 2010

Aug. 31, 2010

Regarding the icons, i would like to spend some time during ESUG ( or the spring) merging what i have in Gaucho. Based on the previous work in MenuIcons and ThemeIcons, i've created an icon family importer, where all the icon contents are stored as methods in the corresponding subclass of GMIconFamily. A brief introduction, Object subclass: #GMIconFamily instanceVariableNames: 'iconsGroups aliases' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'GauchoGUI-Morphic-ImagesAndIcons' Where each GMIconFamily has the corresponding IconFamilyBuilder, that imports the external files from icon specs. IconsFamilyBuilder>>build | specs secs | specs := self iconsSpecs . specs do:[:each| each resourcesFolderName: self resourcesFolderName ]. ^ GMIconFamily createFamilyNamed: self iconFamilyName specs: specs . For example, IconsFamilyBuilder subclass: #GauchoIconsBuilder GauchoIconsBuilder>>iconsSpecs ^ self definedInSpecs , self bugSpecs, self accessorsSpec, .... GauchoIconsBuilder>>build . Will produce a bunch of methods in the GMIconFamiliyGaucho, that will hold the contents and provide access to the icons ( and also act as a form cache) then you can do icon := IconMorph named: 'apply' size: 16 familyNamed: 'gaucho'. I think that it wouldn't be hard to integrate this into Pharo1.2, to have a standardized manner of requesting icons, managing the forms, and easily importing external icon-families. I would be willing to work on this during the sprint. Fernando

[Pharo-project] SerialPort - named ports on Linux
by Schwab,Wilhelm K Aug. 31, 2010

Aug. 31, 2010

Hello all, I recalled seeing mention of the Linux vm's now supporting named ports, and I found the code for that, at least in the vm. My understanding gets fuzzy as we enter the plugin and primitives. At a minimum, there are a few ByName methods to be added, and Squeak 4.1 contains open and close methods that test on type (int vs. string) to open or close by name or not as appropriate. Is this as simple as gathering the changes and adding them to Pharo, or does it require VMMaker magic? Bill

Hi, Is there a way to allow the regex '.' (dot) to match line break characters: 'hello regex' matchesRegex: '.*regex' "true" 'hello regex' matchesRegex: '.*regex' "false" Thanks Nick
