this is why ESUG is really helping helping teachers. In 2002 we sent smalltalk books to universities world wide. Re: [Pharo-project] Statistic tools in Pharo
by Alberto Bacchelli Sept. 29, 2010

Hi Alexandre, My question about a connection between Pharo and Python [1] is related to the issue you are reporting. In Python, they have numpy [2], which offers almost anything one would need for statistics, algebra, ... Instead of re-implementing everything in Pharo (aka re-inventing the wheel), imho, it would be much better to be able to exploit the good work already done by these smart people. My interest to Alien FFI is also related: Instead of using numpy, one could use the external interface offered by MATLAB [3] (in the form of C APIs) to let it do the number crunching. Even though the MATLAB external interface is very simple and clean, I have not being able to use it from Pharo, yet, because I cannot make Alien work under Linux (where my MATLAB resides). I have also tried nativeboost, but I am still not able to create the VM with the necessary plugin to make it work. It is very frustrating: Even if I am working with Fernando (who knows Alien very good), in three days we have not reach any target. It would be awesome if someone else wanted to give me a hand with this task: I believe It would be of interest for many of us. Hi, we just wanted to share with you that Smalltalks 2010 (the 4th Argentinean Smalltalk conference) has been declare of "public interest" at the Entre Rios province (where the city of Concepcion del Uruguay is and where the conference is going to be held). We are very happy and proud of such recognition to Smalltalk and our community!! We hope to see you there! Hernan. PS: Attached is the statement... although, it is is Spanish :-) * *

Re: [Pharo-project] Problem with Proxies, objects and MethoDict

Mariano why your proxy class does not have at least a format, methodDict and superclass? In the past Behavior new something was carashing the vm because methodDict was nil and boum it crashed. I fixed that long time ago. Now I think that a class proxy cannot be just the same as an object proxy from the vm look at structure. Re: [Pharo-project] ECompletion/OCompletion tests takes A LIFE!!

Sept. 29, 2010

On > 30k was a bit optimistic assumption. For example the Pharo 1.1 OneClick image has 3220 globals. The sortBlock asks for the preference twice per evaluation. SortedCollection uses a binary search during #add:. If we are optimistic, then the preference is asked 3220 * (3220 ln / 2 ln) * 2 times which is ~75k. > > In the same image the "old" code asked for the preference 2282899 times during the tests, while the new code did it only 398 times. If the preference is changed to return the value of a variable, then the difference is only 80 ms, otherwise it's 36.6 seconds. As you see we got trap in a tempest of documents to write :) so do not forget to open bug entry wehn some actions should be taken.... Soon back to life Stef
