[Pharo-project] Ideas for CompiledMethod proxies?
by Mariano Martinez Peck Nov. 30, 2010

Nov. 30, 2010

Hi. I am developing kind of proxies for unused compiled methods. I want to detect them, put a proxy instead of them, and swap them to disk. Then, in case they are used, I put back the original ones. With this, I want to realease memory. This is why I need the proxy objects to be as small as possibles. Right now, I do something like this: aProxy := CompiledMethodProxyReferenceStreamWithFileName installOn: ClassWith1Var selector: #foo. this will instantiate the proxy, do the ClassWith1Var methodAt: #foo put: proxy, write the original compiledMethod that was in #foo into a file, etc.... and then if I do "ClassWith1Var new foo", then using the #run:with:in I load the file from disk and I put back the original method. To know WHICH file I have to load, I have to store the fileName in the proxy object. In addition, if I DON'T execute the compiled method, but instead I send a message, for example: (ClassWith1Var >> #foo) literals this has to do the same: load and put back the original compiled method. To do this, I use the doesNotUnderstand:. This is easy to do if I store the fileName in the proxy instance. Right now, I am using as fileName this: CLASS >> SELECTOR. For example, in this case, the file would be named "ClassWith1Var >> #foo" Now.....with this solution, I need create an proxy instance for each compiled method, and these instances have also another instance for the filename. If I could use the same proxy instance for everybody, the amount of memory released would be muuuuch more. So I thought that maybe from the context I can "guess" the filename if I use conventions. For example, if you do "ClassWith1Var new foo" then in the #run:with:in I receive all the information to KNOW that the fileName should be "ClassWith1Var >> #foo". So, no problem here. But for the second case, suppose "(ClassWith1Var >> #foo) literals", I don't see a way to know this. In this case, #literals is intercepted by the doesNotUnderstand: of my proxy, and here I should load back the original compiled method from disk. The problem is that I cannot know in which CLASS and SELECTOR this proxy was put. The only way I know to do this, is to store the class + selector in the proxy instance....but it is the same...I will need an instance per compiled method. In such case is even easier to directly store the fileName. Anyway, if someone has a solution or advice on this, I would be appreciated that. I tried with thisContext, but it didn't help me. Thanks Mariano

[Pharo-project] Problem with #garbageCollect and -memory parameter
by Mariano Martinez Peck Nov. 30, 2010

Nov. 30, 2010

Hi folks. I am using the standard SqueakVM 4.2.5beta1U. If I run normaly the VM with a normal Pharo image and I print Smalltalk garbageCollect -> I get something like 492130460 Now...if I run the vm with the parameter -memory 1500m and I then print Smalltalk garbageCollect -> I get a NEGATIVE number like: -619402660 I guess there is a problem in somewhere like ObjectMemory >> bytesLeft: but I don't know... Anyway, the problem in my case is in SmalltalkImage: okayToProceedEvenIfSpaceIsLow "Return true if either there is enough memory to do so safely or if the user gives permission after being given fair warning." self garbageCollectMost > self lowSpaceThreshold ifTrue: [^ true]. "quick" self garbageCollect > self lowSpaceThreshold ifTrue: [^ true]. "work harder" ^ self confirm: 'WARNING: There is not enough space to start the low space watcher. If you proceed, you will not be warned again, and the system may run out of memory and crash. If you do proceed, you can start the low space notifier when more space becomes available simply by opening and then closing a debugger (e.g., by hitting Cmd-period.) Do you want to proceed?' Since both of the first answers false because, of course garbageCollectMost and garbageCollect are negative.... then I have that poup all the time. To fix this I have to posibilities: 1) Just patch this particular method to: self garbageCollectMost. self primBytesLeft > self lowSpaceThreshold ifTrue: [^ true]. "quick" self garbageCollect self primBytesLeft > self lowSpaceThreshold ifTrue: [^ true]. "work harder" Notice that primBytesLeft is answering correct. Wait..I don't know if correct, but at least possitive: 5691396 I think this is possitive because the primitive is not receiving a parameter, and thus, Interpreter >> primitiveBytesLeft evaluates the first part of the method, which just does self sizeOfFree: freeBlock , and not the second part where it does self bytesLeft: aBool. 2) understand why it is negative and fix it from the VM side (I have no idea how to do this). Now, in addition, I wonder if there may be other places broken because of this....I am having some crashed and I don't know why :( Thanks in advance, Mariano

Hi, So we finally have a Hudson: http://pharo-ic.lille.inria.fr/ - one Linux Builder Slave machine - Builds and runs tests of Core 1.1 - loads updates and runs tests Core 1.2 For now, it builds once per day. Starting tomorrow, 1.2 will be build automatically after an update. More to come... (e.g. builds of the full release, One-Click... Mac Slave...) Re: [Pharo-project] ConfigurationOfMocketry + Help
by laurent laffont Nov. 30, 2010

Hi Denis, I've commited Mocketry-Help and ConfigurationOfMocketry is in MetacelloRepository. I removed SMock-SUnit from the Configuration but SMock is still here for Mocketry-Tests (it may be good enough for a first release). I have 3 tests failing from SMock: SMProxyTest>>#testDefaultInspectString SMProxyTest>>#testDefaultDebugString SMProxyTest>>#testDefaultPrintString Cheers, Laurent. [Pharo-project] Issue 3360 in pharo: TextConverter handling of binary streams is wrong
by pharo＠googlecode.com Nov. 30, 2010

Nov. 30, 2010

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 3360 by sven.van.caekenberghe: TextConverter handling of binary streams is wrong http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=3360 It seems that the way binary (#isBinary true) streams are handled by TextConverter and its subclasses is wrong. When given a binary stream, the core text converter methods (#nextPut:toStream and #nextFromStream:) simply do no longer encode or decode at all. Moreover, the unit test UTF8TextConverter>>#testPutSingleCharacter seems plain wrong. The actual encoded bytes should be #[97 226 130 172]. However, this behavior seems to be added by design, so it is hard to estimate the impact of changing this. It is currently very ugly to get a binary UTF-8 encoding, one has to write to a character stream and then turn those characters into bytes. I wrote an alternative UTF-8 encoder as a support class to the Zinc HTTP Components (http://www.squeaksource.com/ZincHTTPComponents.html) together with the following unit test: testUTF8Encoder "The examples are taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-8#Description" | encoder inputBytes outputBytes inputString outputString | encoder := ZnUTF8Encoder new. inputString := String with: $$ with: (Unicode value: 16r00A2) with: (Unicode value: 16r20AC) with: (Unicode value: 16r024B62). inputBytes := #[16r24 16rC2 16rA2 16rE2 16r82 16rAC 16rF0 16rA4 16rAD 16rA2]. outputBytes := self encodeString: inputString with: encoder. self assert: outputBytes = inputBytes. outputString := self decodeBytes: inputBytes with: encoder. self assert: outputString = inputString based on the helper methods: encodeString: string with: encoder ^ ByteArray streamContents: [ :stream | string do: [ :each | encoder nextPut: each toStream: stream ] ] decodeBytes: bytes with: encoder | input | input := bytes readStream. ^ String streamContents: [ :stream | [ input atEnd ] whileFalse: [ stream nextPut: (encoder nextFromStream: input) ] ] The new encoder code is simpler, but might not handle everything that is needed (leading chars, language codes), but is all that still needed ?
