[Pharo-project] access to the serial interface?
by Friedrich Dominicus Dec. 15, 2010

Dec. 15, 2010

I'm wondering how to I access the serial interface on the diverse Platforms with Pharo. On Unix I assume I just can open the "/dev/ttyX" as Stream? What about access to COM: stuff in Windows. Just open it and see what will happen? Regards Friedrich

[Pharo-project] good news of the year
by Stéphane Ducasse Dec. 15, 2010

Dec. 15, 2010

Hi all We have a really good news for pharo. Igor got a job as engineer in our team for two years. We are really thankful to INRIA for that. Since we want to be transparent here is the way we plan to work. We asked igor to help fixing bug fixes for about 20% of his time. And to focus on larger items. Here is a list based on the brainstorming we did and what we told INRIA igor would do. Now if you want to help and join effort with us this is even better. Now igor started to work on OPAL because we would like to have it for a beta in january, when we will get a new unstable stream. Stef -- Set nil -- Hashed Collection -- dictionary are slower -- Generalize stream protocol #readInto:startingAt:count: -- WeakStructure -- Finalizer -- Chapter on Finalizer -- Better integration process -- EventSensor polling - publish a windows VM that support it -- ClassBuilder rewrite -- Helping improving the VM - cleaner code -- Cleaning events/annoucement check CUIS on:send: changed:/update -- SystemChangeNotification -> announcement sync with Cyrille review with Cyrille -- Using RPackage in Monticello sync with cyrille -- iSqueak New event hierarchy Alain imported that Multitouch? -- New compiler -- debug -- Decompiler IR -> AST -- Cleanups -- API -- Environment -- ROME API - API stablisation: openVG - system rewrite to use API -- Ephemerons ?? -- Announcement with weak structure -- Networks - may be use WeakFinalizer here. - looking at Andreas fixes in Squeak

Dear Smalltalkers, Christmas edition of Aida/Web is on the way and here is first beta, for Squeak/Pharo and VisualWorks. Instruction how to install it are there: http://www.aidaweb.si/download , Beta release What's new: *Mobile* devices like smartpone and tablet support, with mobile device detection and special mobile CSS as addition to screen CSS, so that you can easily adapt your existing apps to mobile simply by overriding the existing CSS. *HTML5* support: Aida switches now to HTML5 by default and HTML5 specific features will be gradually added, WebSocket is there already, local storage and offline support comes next. *WebSocket* support for bidirectional communication between server and browser, as a replacement for Comet. WebSocket channel is now automatically open on the session with WebSocket capable browser. *JSON* messaging introduced to be gradually used as only message format in unified (Ajax or WebSocket) communication between server and browser *Widget forms" introduced, hierarchy of forms follow the hierarchy of standalone widgets, each widget can Ajax submit its own form together with subforms in subwidgets. *registering root domain objects* is now simplified: myAIDASite register: myObject onUrl: '/myobject' Release notes with most important new features higlighted are available at: http://www.aidaweb.si/release-notes-6.2 . [Pharo-project] [Hudson] Changes this week
by Marcus Denker Dec. 15, 2010

Dec. 15, 2010

Hi, Hudson changes of today and yesterday: - added the image, changes and sources of the last successfull build as .zip (this is now configured for all 1.1, 1.2 core and full) - do not archive the images after test run. (the Workspace has those if one needs them) - The Full builds now are triggered to be rebuilt after a core build (need to be tested) - Cyrille started to use the Hudson for the Moose-based Pharo reporting stuff (work in progress) Next steps: - One-Click Builds for Full 1.1 and 1.2 - Add update numbers to build descriptions - Full builds should re-use the core image artefacts Later: - Builds VMs from reposository, use those for everything. -- Marcus Denker -- http://www.marcusdenker.de INRIA Lille -- Nord Europe. [Pharo-project] A Git-based VM sources repositories for you
by Igor Stasenko Dec. 15, 2010

Dec. 15, 2010

Hello, community (preface) there was a discussion about using git for VM sources and recently in pharo team, we are also discussed that, and decided to go on. So i started to look for an options and found that Gitorious is best solution for us all. In contrast to github, it doesn't charging users when their repository grow beyond 300Mb in size. And its totally free for open-source projects. To be sure, that i understood thing well, i even sent mail to support to clarify some aspects of their policy and got following in answer: <<<< quote start I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am about this! Smalltalk is the coolest thing I know about computers, and I love what you have done with Squeak, thanks! <... skip technical details ...> The short version: go ahead! I'm really pleased you want to use Gitorious and I hope you'll be satisfied! Cheers, - Marius >>>>>> quote end. So, after such warm welcome, the choice was obvious :) I made a mirrors of SVN repositories for Squeak VM and Cog VM on gitorious.org. i created a group named: squeak-vm-developers http://gitorious.org/+squeak-vm-developers this group owns two projects: Squeak VM (http://gitorious.org/squeak-vm) and Cog VM (http://gitorious.org/cogvm) Any member(s) of group having an admin access to these projects , and commit rights to projects 'blessed' repositories: http://gitorious.org/cogvm/blessed http://gitorious.org/squeak-vm/blessed (yes, a single project could have multiple repositories, but for start we will use just one - a blessed ;) Now what any people from street can do: - register @ gitorious.org - go to /cogvm/blessed or /squeak-vm/blessed - click magic 'clone repository' button and from now you will have a fresh copy of 'official' repository, ready for hacking in your own corner, where you are the all powerful deity and can do anything you want without asking anyone. That's the main reason for migrating to git-based hosting: - easy for getting in - no additional administration costs - people can easily exchange the results of their own experiments without putting an 'official' repository in danger. @(John, Elior, Ian & other currently active SVN users) note: There is no pressure for migrating to git-based source code management. if you keep using SVN, no problem. I will take care with refreshing a blessed repo(s) with SVN commits. But if you want to migrate, ask me, and i will add you to 'squeak-vm-developers' group. Note that this group serves only for managing and official 'blessed' repos, and if you don't want participate, you can just live in own corner as anyone else can. This doesn't make much difference anyways :) I just wanna tell, that from now i will use own clone(s) of 'blessed' repos for experiments and of course i encouraging everyone, who wants to start hacking VM(s) to do the same. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.
