[Pharo-project] Diagram Tool
by Torsten Bergmann Dec. 29, 2010

Dec. 29, 2010

Hi, I would like to see a lean diagram tool included into Pharo-dev in the future. The diagram part should be generic but by default it may include UML visualization (we once had this in the extended OB in the old Pharo-devs). A good UML editor would really be helpfull. I've seen "smallUML","Mondrian" and others but mostly they visualize existing code instead of "interactively create" new stuff. I would like to see a tool similar to "eUML2" in Java which is able to synchronize code and diagrams automatically. (see http://www.soyatec.com/euml2/screenshots) I think of the following scenario: - you open Pharo and select diagram editor from the world menu - you select/create a package, for instance "MyApp" - this leads to the following packages: "MyApp-Core" -> code "MyApp-Tests" -> SUnit test code "MyApp-Help" -> help descriptions "MyApp-Diagram" -> here the diagram contents stored in classes - you click on "new class" and place a UML class in the diagram area. You name your class in the graphic for instance "Person" - you add a property "firstName" -> an IVar "firstName" is created - it allows you to easily create accessors (if you click "read only" only a getter is created) - you create another class "Account" and create a relationship "owner" by drawing an association line, the code is created - if you "manually" add an ivar to a class it will popup in the diagram too - ... With a few clicks you are able to find a nice design and you can use the diagrams to discuss with others. Maybe this could lead to a Graphical Editing Framework similar to Eclipse GEF http://www.eclipse.org/gef/ allowing you to provide own shapes and connections by adding custom shape/connection libraries. Attached is a first shot on the graphic part. File into a 1.2 image and select "Tools"->"DiagramEditor". This is just a test - maybe it is also possible to extend existing frameworks like Mondrian ... Anyone interested... Bye T. -- GMX DSL Doppel-Flat ab 19,99 Euro/mtl.! [Pharo-project] big ui decisions
by Chip Nowacek Dec. 29, 2010

Dec. 29, 2010

Thanks for your help so far. Now that I've had a chance to get my feet wet, start an eval of VW, watch Peter Fisk's progress, etc. I've hit a scary point. To go the distance, my app needs the maturity and capacity of Squeak/Pharo/VW(?). And, near- and long-term, it needs an elegant, cogent, captivating, intelligent, engaging, interactive front end. I've considered doing it in Flash or Silverlight or AIR (fat client) or straight JavaScript - though splitting the tiers and forgetting the backend seems like a lot of deferred pain. I know I have to worry about deployment. I am. I'd rather do it through the browser. And, even though DabbleDB and others are some of the coolest apps ever, I don't see Seaside cutting the front-end mustard (at least the way I understand things at this point). I sure wish there was a lightening-fast, browser-based, morphic-3-supporting VM so I could run ST on both tiers. A sexy, Smalltalk Lively-Kernel. I'm still trying to get Clamato to work. So, in your professional, experienced opinions, can I get a front end on Pharo (either in-image via Rome/Athens or some cooler-than-I've-seen, through-the-browser front end)? With all due respect to the Founding Fathers, I can't do eToys. Should I just do the whole client tier in in JS for the prototype and then hook to Seaside later? Any thoughts would be deeply appreciated. Thanks, Chip -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/big-ui-decisions-tp3160359p3160359.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[Pharo-project] random crashes... help needed (Pharo, Magma, Seaside... I dunno)
by Esteban Lorenzano Dec. 29, 2010

Dec. 29, 2010

Hi, I'm having random crashes in a production image. This crashes occurs without leaving any information available... it just crash. No PharoDebug.log, no dump, nothing... finally, yesterday I get a PharoDebug.log (which I'm attaching) with some error information... but frankly I don't know if this is the reason the image is crashing or some other random error. Some other elements I'm seeing is: - Seaside sessions are in fact never removed unless I manually execute garbage collect. - WeakArray FinalizationDependents is bigger than usual (90 instances), elements are mostly WeakIdentityDictionary and MaWeakIdentityDictionary (most of them empty but some other with sizes from 700 to 4000). I'm using a Pharo 1.1.1 with Seaside 3.0 and Magma 1.1r2 The VM is any VM (exuperi 0.15f or unix cog) . OS is "some kind of linux"... looks like a "custom suse". Well... and I'm completely lost. Any help will be very appreciated... even on ways on how to get more info of my crashing system (redirecting standard and error output does not works either)... And the access I have to the O.S. is also limited. Cheers, Esteban

[Pharo-project] Pharo 1.2 - default packages
by laurent laffont Dec. 29, 2010

Dec. 29, 2010

Hi, What do you think about adding these packages as default in Pharo 1.2: - ConfigurationOfMocketry - ConfigurationOfXMLSupport - ConfigurationOfCryptography (does'nt exist yet, planned to be created in a local coding-dojo on Tuesday). Motivations: - XMLSupport and Cryptography are often needed to consume web services - Mocketry because I want to write tests using Mocks and it's easier to work when tools are in standard Pharo (and then newcomers can see Mocketry examples). I will update ConfigurationOfPharo 1.2 (beta3 ?) if people agree. Cheers, Laurent Laffont

Hi guys What yoshiki is doing is quite nice and cool. We started this summer to do the same (without the C compiler). Now we will see how we can join effort or at least interact or learn from what he did. Nicolas, Gabriel and Benjamin we should continue :) so that your work is not lost. Now there are some lessons to learn: when you believe into something, you should do it and not talk. - I should have worked on that after seen the talk of dave thomas at ESUG at Douai instead of trying to improve squeak. Now as a researcher papers papers projects money projects...... are slowly killing us. - I really really happy that we decided to do pharo because at least we are doing something. Thanks you all for your good energy. Stef ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Yoshiki Ohshima <yoshiki(a)vpri.org> Date: Tue, Dec 28, 2010 at 11:19 AM Subject: [squeak-dev] A Bootstrap Compiler To: The general-purpose Squeak developers list <squeak-dev(a)lists.squeakfoundation.org> Hi, We've been playing with John's MicroSqueak and it occured to me that having a bytecode compiler that is implemented outside of Squeak opens some possibilities, such as generate a growable image file from all text files, or make deep changes to the system without shooting yourself. I wrote a longer explanation so if you are interested, please go to: https://github.com/yoshikiohshima/SqueakBootstrapper and check it out. Thank you! -- Yoshiki
