Thanks for your help so far. Now that I've had a chance to get my feet wet, start an eval of VW, watch Peter Fisk's progress, etc. I've hit a scary point. To go the distance, my app needs the maturity and capacity of Squeak/Pharo/VW(?). And, near- and long-term, it needs an elegant, cogent, captivating, intelligent, engaging, interactive front end. I've considered doing it in Flash or Silverlight or AIR (fat client) or straight JavaScript - though splitting the tiers and forgetting the backend seems like a lot of deferred pain. I know I have to worry about deployment. I am. I'd rather do it through the browser. And, even though DabbleDB and others are some of the coolest apps ever, I don't see Seaside cutting the front-end mustard (at least the way I understand things at this point). I sure wish there was a lightening-fast, browser-based, morphic-3-supporting VM so I could run ST on both tiers. A sexy, Smalltalk Lively-Kernel. I'm still trying to get Clamato to work. So, in your professional, experienced opinions, can I get a front end on Pharo (either in-image via Rome/Athens or some cooler-than-I've-seen, through-the-browser front end)? With all due respect to the Founding Fathers, I can't do eToys. Should I just do the whole client tier in in JS for the prototype and then hook to Seaside later? Any thoughts would be deeply appreciated. [Pharo-project] random crashes... help needed (Pharo, Magma, Seaside... I dunno)

Hi, I'm having random crashes in a production image. This crashes occurs without leaving any information available... it just crash. No PharoDebug.log, no dump, nothing... finally, yesterday I get a PharoDebug.log (which I'm attaching) with some error information... but frankly I don't know if this is the reason the image is crashing or some other random error. Some other elements I'm seeing is: - Seaside sessions are in fact never removed unless I manually execute garbage collect. - WeakArray FinalizationDependents is bigger than usual (90 instances), elements are mostly WeakIdentityDictionary and MaWeakIdentityDictionary (most of them empty but some other with sizes from 700 to 4000). I'm using a Pharo 1.1.1 with Seaside 3.0 and Magma 1.1r2 The VM is any VM (exuperi 0.15f or unix cog) . OS is "some kind of linux"... looks like a "custom suse". Well... and I'm completely lost. Any help will be very appreciated... even on ways on how to get more info of my crashing system (redirecting standard and error output does not works either)... And the access I have to the O.S. is also limited. Cheers, Esteban

Hi, What do you think about adding these packages as default in Pharo 1.2: - ConfigurationOfMocketry - ConfigurationOfXMLSupport - ConfigurationOfCryptography (does'nt exist yet, planned to be created in a local coding-dojo on Tuesday). Motivations: - XMLSupport and Cryptography are often needed to consume web services - Mocketry because I want to write tests using Mocks and it's easier to work when tools are in standard Pharo (and then newcomers can see Mocketry examples). I will update ConfigurationOfPharo 1.2 (beta3 ?) if people agree. Cheers, Laurent Laffont

Hi guys What yoshiki is doing is quite nice and cool. We started this summer to do the same (without the C compiler). Now we will see how we can join effort or at least interact or learn from what he did. Nicolas, Gabriel and Benjamin we should continue :) so that your work is not lost. Now there are some lessons to learn: when you believe into something, you should do it and not talk. - I should have worked on that after seen the talk of dave thomas at ESUG at Douai instead of trying to improve squeak. Now as a researcher papers papers projects money projects...... are slowly killing us. - I really really happy that we decided to do pharo because at least we are doing something. Hi (alain?). I wonder if this is a feature or a bug. When I open a system windows AND a find & replace popup, even if the system window is in front, when I click in the code pane of a method, the find replace popup comes to front :( I mean, it gets the focus. Thanks Mariano

I think both suggestions are good. Maybe you or Torsten have time to it. Basically, both can be done. Open a file dialog instead of just asking the name of the file / folder. And the other one, now that in pharo 1.2 we have the samlltalk and text editor, it would be easy. We can have "notes" and "scripts". Notes can just open a text editor (without colors and completion) and "scripts" a shout workspace with autocompletion + colors.
