[Pharo-project] Issue 3802 in pharo: A strange superclasses if Canvas
by pharo＠googlecode.com March 10, 2011

March 10, 2011

Status: Accepted Owner: siguc...@gmail.com New issue 3802 by siguc...@gmail.com: A strange superclasses if Canvas http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=3802 Imagine that you can do something like: Object new drawOnCanvas: World assuredCanvas no, don't imagine. You can do that! :) At least it is supposed to work, because Canvas inherits from some strange things (NullEncoder, FlattenEncoder), so you can actually instruct any object to draw itself on canvas.. which is makes some sense (sort of): Canvas>>draw: anObject ^anObject drawOn: self Object>>drawOnCanvas:aStream self flattenOnStream:aStream. But as to me, Object should NOT implement #drawOnCanvas:, nor #drawOn:. Period. The real users of protocols placed in NullEncoder and FlattenEncoder is PostscriptCanvas which are not included into core images. So, the proposal is to remove the extra noise by making Canvas to be the subclass of Object. And for things which do care about serializing drawing commands onto some stream (like PostScriptCanvas do), make a subclass and introduce this behavior later.

[Pharo-project] Slides and Code | Networking @ Deep Into Smalltalk Spring School
by Noury Bouraqadi March 9, 2011

March 9, 2011

Hi, The slides and the Pharo code (with class comments :-) of my talk at the "Deep Into Smalltalk" Spring School are available at http://car.mines-douai.fr/noury/docs. The provided code covers the last two coding challenges of my talk: ⢠Simple TCP server implementing a basic Twitter-like server. I show how to use Socket for handling client connections and SocketStream to deal with data exchange with a client. ⢠Remote Messaging. The idea is to illustrate how to build a middleware similar to Remote Smtalltalk (rST) allowing message sends between objects located in different images. On the client side I show how to build a proxy, that is a place holder for a remote object. The proxy captures received messages and serialize them before sending the resulting bytes through a socket stream connected to the server. On the server side, a dispatcher recreates messages from received bytes and send them to the appropriate local object. [Pharo-project] InterpreterSimulator reloaded
by Pavel Krivanek March 9, 2011

March 9, 2011

Hi, I tried to make the IneterpreterSimulator working on and with latest images. The result is a Pharo image that you can download here: https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/shownotes.php?release_id=5897 It is still far from perfect however it can be used for simulations of small headless images etc. It would be great if some VM guy will help with integration of the changes. Cheers, -- Pavel

[Pharo-project] PharoOneClick .lnk file
by Torsten Bergmann March 9, 2011

March 9, 2011

>.. and this should probably be Pharo.exe with a nice Pharo icon :) I already created a custom Pharo VM (a standard one and a Cog VM, both with Pharo icon and resource section) and gave this to Marcus. I guess he just has to find the time to include it in the One click. As a windows user when I extract a ZIP I typically would expect the launcher exe at the root level and not in /Contents/Windows. Download Eclipse and you know what I mean. I understand that this folder structure was choosen due to the multiplatform nature of the one click. The .bat file solution would make us look really old style ;) However - when Pharo 1.2 is ready I try to find the time to build a setup again (as I already provided on the download page for previous Pharo versions) I expect a windows user to be more satisfied with a typicall installer that also set up program group, ... and allows also to uninstall. And this installer download is also smaller than the OneClick since Linux/Mac VMs are not necessary.
