[Pharo-project] Preallocation behavior
by jannik.laval April 28, 2011

April 28, 2011

Hi all, I am playing with MessageTally, and I have a strange result with prealocation. Here is my example. I am working on a PharoCore1.3, with a VM4.2.5 First of all, I spy this source code: ==== MessageTally spyOn: [ 500 timesRepeat: [ | str | str := ''. 9000 timesRepeat: [ str := str, 'A' ]]]. ==== The result appears after 24 961 ms. An optimization is to use a Stream. Here is my source code: === MessageTally spyOn: [ 500 timesRepeat: [ | str | str := WriteStream on: (String new). 9000 timesRepeat: [ str nextPut: $A ]]]. === The result appears after 812 ms, which is a large improvement. Now, we could optimize again using the preallocation. Here is my source code: ==== MessageTally spyOn: [ 500 timesRepeat: [ | str | str := WriteStream on: (String new: 10000). 9000 timesRepeat: [ str nextPutAll: 'A' ]]]. ==== And the result is strange: it makes 2 times slower to display the result. The result appears after 1656 ms. Here is the spy result: === - 1656 tallies, 1656 msec. **Tree** -------------------------------- Process: (40s) 464519168: nil -------------------------------- **Leaves** 22.9% {380ms} UndefinedObject>>DoIt 22.5% {373ms} SmallInteger(Integer)>>timesRepeat: 22.2% {368ms} WriteStream>>nextPutAll: === There is the call of UndefinedObject>>DoIt which is added and takes time. Does anyone know what is done during the preallocation ? Why is it slower than non-preallocation ? Thanks for your answers. Jannik

[Pharo-project] GitFs / MCGit
by Camillo Bruni April 28, 2011

April 28, 2011

Hi Max, I took another effort to work on the git bindings of MC. However I ran into troubles with FSGitFilesystem on commiting. 1. I fail when saving the repos in GitCommit >> parents when it starts to lazily load the object which does not exist yet... 2. GitRespository >> packedObjectWithSignature: aGitObjectSignature does not throw an exception but simply returns nil? does this make sense? maybe you have a clue how to solve this faster than I do :-) camillo

[Pharo-project] Why we have Behavior >> flushCache?
by Mariano Martinez Peck April 28, 2011

April 28, 2011

Hi. As far as I can see, Behavior >> flushCache "Tell the interpreter to remove the contents of its method lookup cache, if it has one. Essential. See Object documentation whatIsAPrimitive." <primitive: 89> self primitiveFailed And primitive 89 does nothing in particular with the receiver (the class in this case). In both, InterpreterVM and Cog, the WHOLE cache is flushed, there is NOTHING related to the receiver class. Of course, that's at least what it looks for me (please tell me if I am wrong). So...if this is the case, wouldn't make sense to move it elsewhere? like Smalltalk flushCache or Smalltalk vm flushCache (and it is a good moment to reify the VM). So after we can do: Smalltalk vm version. Smalltlak vm flushCache, Smalltalk vm parameterAt: , etc.... If you don't like doing "Smalltalk vm" then we can create a VM class with all class methods, or a singleton and use #current or a singleton and put it in Smalltalk globals...etc We will need to fix a couple of senders, thus. What do you think? For me is really confusing, and you don't understand it until you see the primitive implementation. Cheers -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

I added a tracker entry: http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=4104 I will see how to fix that. [Pharo-project] [ANN] PharoDev-1.3-13173
by Mariano Martinez Peck April 28, 2011

April 28, 2011

Hi. IMPORTANT: This is not the final 1.3 release, it just one simple snapshot and one point. We all want a rock-solid Pharo 1.3 release, but that doesn't happens automagically. We all need to start using and testing the image before they are release. It is for the better of all of us. The more we test the more stable will be the release. So...we need your help. What you can do? 1) test test test test test. Use it. Take this image and use it for your regular work. 2) report bugs: http://www.pharo-project.org/community/issue-tracking 3) propose fixes: http://code.google.com/p/pharo/wiki/HowToContribute 4) Fix errors/failures tests 5) Load your OWN packages and projects now. Don't wait until Pharo1.3 is released and then ask "uuhh what happened to XXX? you removed? ohhh but I use it". 6) Do you maintain Metacello configurations? ok, if you test your project and works correctly in Pharo 1.3, please update (or create if you don't yet have it) the #stable, 7) Do you maintain packages included in Pharo? please check we are using the correct versions 8) I would like to see people testing AidaWeb, Magma, Fuel, Moose, DBXTalk, Seaside and all its friends, Zinc, FileSystem, etc, etc, etc. Pharo-1.3-13173 should work with Interpreter VM and with Cog. For Cog I recommend to download the last one from Eliot's page: http://www.mirandabanda.org/files/Cog/VM/ Two little warnings: - The Transcript is read only....and it will probably be roll backed to the previous one - if text editing looks weird....it is Lukas's fault ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTMX1f8Lu5w Ok, the image is here: https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/28517/Pharo-1.3-13173.zip<https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/28517/Pharo-1.3-13173.zip> And it was build by Hudson: https://pharo-ic.lille.inria.fr/hudson/view/Pharo/job/Pharo%201.3/111/ Best regards, -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com
