Hi Ron-- Thanks! Yeah, this is a system that can serve a website for doing module discovery and management, appear as a filesystem through WebDAV, keep track of changes, and serve modules to other systems. Currently it's 300k, but there's another shrinking pass left. -C -- Craig Latta www.netjam.org/resume +31 6 2757 7177 + 1 415 287 3547

[Pharo-project] roadmap for 1.4
by Stéphane Ducasse June 21, 2011

June 21, 2011

Hi guys here is a kind of dump of roadmap for 1.4 first level is to make sure that we have only one single image. - load FileSystem -> so that we can start to integrate and improve the fileSystem API - Load shout, Ocompletion, RBEngine (not OB) so that we can change what should be changed for RPackage to work - Ring -> so that we can start to integrate it - Fuel -> so that we can deprecate SmartRefStream (there may be a problem with mcz (not sure)). - I want Opal in 1.4 too. - continue to remove StringHolder hierarchy - Morphic improvements Comments are welcomed. [Pharo-project] FFI and capturing external program input in Squeak/Pharo
by Dave Mason June 20, 2011

June 20, 2011

I'm working on making a clean interface layer on top of FFI (and possibly Alien and NativeBoost). It will look something like: FFIParse createFFI: #System category: 'My-Category' library: 'System'. System parseSystemHeader: 'sys/resource.h'. rusage := System struct: #rusage. System getrusage: 0 with: rusage. Transcript show: 'Used '; show: rusage ru_utime tv_sec; show: '.'; show: rusage ru_utime tv_usec; show: ' seconds of user CPU time'; cr. System parseSystemHeaer: 'unistd.h'; sleep: 5. pid := System getpid I have a very compact, almost compete C header parser but I need to be able to get the output from popen("echo \"#include <unistd.h>\"|gcc -E -","r") or equivalent. The popen is easy enough to get at through FFI, but is there a way to connect either the FILE* or the file descriptor up to some ReadStream. In the worst case, I could probably use FFI to call fread(3) but is there a better way? I'd also appreciate any simple examples of using FFI, especially with ExternalStructure subclasses. Finally is there a way to get external variables such as 'extern int errno;' ? Thanks in advance! ../Dave

[Pharo-project] Fuel - a fast object deployment tool
by Martin Dias June 20, 2011

June 20, 2011

Hi all Last months I and Tristan have been working on Fuel project, an object binary serialization tool. The idea is that objects are much more times loaded than stored, therefore it is worth to spend time while storing in order to have faster loading and user experience. We present an implementation of a pickle format that is based on clustering similar objects. There is a summary of the project below, but more complete information is available here: http://rmod.lille.inria.fr/web/pier/software/Fuel The implementation still needs a lot of work to be really useful, optimizations should be done, but we'll be glad to get feedback of the community. = Pickle format = The pickle format and the serialization algorithm main idea, is explained in this slides: http://www.slideshare.net/tinchodias/fuel-serialization-in-an-example = Current features = - Class shape changing (when a variable has been added, or removed, or its index changed) - Serialize most of the basic objects. - Serialize (almost) any CompiledMethod - Detection of global or class variables - Support for cyclic object graphs - Tests = Next steps = - Improve version checking. - Optimize performance. - Serialize more kinds of objects: -- Class with its complete description. -- Method contexts -- Active block closures -- Continuation - Some improvements for the user: -- pre and post actions to be executed. -- easily say 'this object is singleton'. - Partial loading of a stored graph. - Fast statistics/brief info extraction of a stored graph. - ConfigurationOfFuel. - Be able to deploy materialization behavior only (independent from the serialization behavior) = Download = In a Pharo 1.1 or 1.1.1 evaluate: Gofer new squeaksource: 'Fuel'; version: 'Fuel-MartinDias.74'; version: 'FuelBenchmarks-MartinDias.4'; load. = Benchmarks = You can run benchmarks executing this line (results in Transcript): FLBenchmarks newBasic run. Thank you! Martin Dias

[Pharo-project] About not using full Pharo
by Torsten Bergmann June 20, 2011

June 20, 2011

It's hard to work on core without good tools and this will become more painfull the more we strip down core in the future. But we all agreed that we need a stable core to build on top of it because there are also people who just require a core Smalltalk and not a full developer IDE or people who have their own IDE setup or want to do experiments. There is only one solution to this: - repackage and introduce clean dependencies between the packages If this is done it is much easier - to build a dev on top of core by loading - to build a core by stripping a dev - to build a kernel from core - to have a custom image with the packages you need And once we have done it we can extend our toolset not only to build and test packages but also to check validness and quality.
