InternetConfiguration has a method called on image save that removes the proxy on the mac: shutDown OSPlatform isMacOS ifTrue: [ HTTPSocket stopUsingProxyServer ] startUp should not mess with the proxy on other systems. > Would there be a way to detect if the proxy still exists on startUp, > and if it doesn't, then temporarily disable the proxy instead? It's the duty of the OS to provide proxy info, and the duty of the VM to provide this to the Image. Till today, this exists only on the Mac. [Pharo-project] Checking password entropy
by John Toohey June 29, 2011

June 29, 2011

Hi, Does anyone know of a package for Pharo that can calculate password strength based on its entropy? I know the formula based on the size of the symbol set and length of password, but would like to see some smalltalk code that fully implements this. -- ~JT

[Pharo-project] Need help with ConfigurationOfCog
by Igor Stasenko June 29, 2011

June 29, 2011

I updated the configuration to load new specs (ver 2.1), and everything worked before, but looks like after update of metacello, it does some checks and barks with error: Apparent loop in before/after dependency definitions any advice, what is wrong with it? The script to load stuff is following: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfCog'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfCog) project version: '2.1') load. (Smalltalk saveAs: 'generator.image') ifFalse: [ Smalltalk snapshot: false andQuit: true] its used on hudson server to build VMs, and apparently worked before. And i'm clueless what exactly wrong (not expert with metacello). -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

We did it with 1.1... the problem is that the build server is getting really full if we keep everything. And e.g. 1.2 did not change in weeks, so building it (unchanged) and running the tests (unchanged), does that make sense? We can keep it if people need... but this time we switch servers in addition, so links will change anyway. > Providing these builds might lead to people using them, and in commercial > development we mostly use released versions to base on. Did it all but Iliad's still not behaving as it was in 1.2.1 or 1.1.1, still getting the "receiver of session is nil" error... [Pharo-project] zinc incompatibilities with gemstone
by Esteban Lorenzano June 29, 2011

June 29, 2011

Hi, I'm trying to load Zinc on gemstone. It more or less loads fine, but there are some fixes needed, I'm attaching the problems I found, hoping some benevolent soul will integrate to gemstone zinc code :) This are the problems found: ZnUrl>>scheme: symbol symbol isNil ifTrue: [ scheme := nil ] ifFalse: [ (#(#http #https) includes: symbol) "<== they need to be strings (symbols ~= strings in gemstone)" ifTrue: [ scheme := symbol asSymbol ] ifFalse: [ (ZnUnknowScheme scheme: symbol) signal ] ] ZnNetworkingUtils>>isProxySet "Should a proxy be used ?" ^ NetworkSystemSettings useHTTPProxy "<== This class does not exists." ZnNetworkingUtils>>socketStreamTimeout "Access the current timeout in seconds for SocketStream IO" ^ ZnConnectionTimeout value "<== DynamicVariable class (parent of ZnConnectionTimeout) does not exists." best, Esteban

Its only from naïveté . What do you recommend I do instead? As Norbert mentioned in Pharo #hi = 'hi' evaluates to true but in Gemstone it evaluates to false. My only ideas to address the issue you bring up is to: 1. get Sven to change his design/coding behavior which may impede the functional improvement of Zinc in a small way. 2. get Pharo to behave as the blue book says it should 3. get Gemstone to behave like Pharo does. 4. Put an asSymbol everywhere the problem pops up. 5. ??? I'm sure there are better ideas but that's all I can think of at the moment. Also I do it twice in that method. I'd really appreciate reading a guide or some guidelines on how to do cross platform development. Or just code reviews like you've provided. I also override things rather than subclass in the port, as a rule. I think that's also offensive in some way but I'm not sure how/why. Thanks for the heads up Paul

June 29, 2011

Hi Stefan, Thanks a lot, your script fails upon trying to load ConfigurationOfOmniBrowser, ConfigurationOfShout and ConfigurationOfOCompletion though, I tried using the metacello repo but loading fails as follows: 'Could not resolve: OB-Standard [OB-Standard-lr.541] in /home/nabax/Downloads/PharoCore-1.3/package-cache http://www.squeaksource.com/PharoOB' Of cource it couldn't resolve it cos it's not there, why is it looking at my local cache instead of squeaksource? o_O Cheers! 2011/6/28 Stefan Schmiedl <s(a)xss.de> > On Tue, 28 Jun 2011 17:15:52 +0200 > Bernat Romagosa <tibabenfortlapalanca(a)gmail.com> wrote: > > > Hi lists, > > > > I don't know whether this issue is Pharo's or Iliad's, so I'm writing to > > both lists. > > > > I've just tried to pull Iliad 0.9.1 from the repos into a fresh Pharo 1.3 > > image and I keep getting the error "receiver of session is nil" every > time I > > execute an action.
