[Pharo-project] Installing Cog - was Pharo 1.2.1 crashing
by Schwab,Wilhelm K July 9, 2011

July 9, 2011

Sig, Is there anything I should know about using the Stack or Cog vms from Hudson? It looks like the zips contain a vm, some external plugins and drivers. Can they simply be dumped in a directory with the image/changes and launched using a shell script? Below, are you recommending the Stack vm to remove Cog features that might be causing problems? [Pharo-project] About marketing and exchange between companies
by Stéphane Ducasse July 9, 2011

July 9, 2011

Hi guys I was discussing with Sven and I think that we could improve two things: - better marketing: T3 Easy is the example of Pharo on the server! We should add this to our success story web page T3 Easy is our new entry level track & trace product, an HTML5 web app (using client side HTML+Javascript+CSS) on top of a REST server written in Pharo Smalltalk. It consists of 4 stateless Pharo Cog VM's running behind an Apache load balancer. The server uses Zinc HTTP Components, both for its server part, as well as for clients talking to other systems behind the scenes. Even the Open Street Map tile serving, which is pushing out many megabytes, is currently going through this server. Here is a live demo URL in case your are curious: http://easy.t3-platform.net?t=livedemo - More exchanges between companies building on top of pharo. Sven showed us its automatic deployement infrastructure (using monit) and the automatic update and it was really what you want. Four server automatically restarting and ... So I would like to urge you companies guys to create a pool of knowledge and recipe around pharo. If you have docs/scripts I can put them in shape for a deployment chapter Stef

[Pharo-project] Understanding announcements
by Norbert Hartl July 8, 2011

July 8, 2011

It's been some time since I last used announcements. I had the impression that one of the benefits of announcements is that every object can play the role of an announcment. So I would expect the following to work | ann | ann := Announcer new. ann subscribe: Object do: [ Transcript show: 'received object announcement' ]. ann announce: Object new asAnnouncement As this is not working I wonder what is a good approach to wire my own model with announcements. Deriving my model from Announcement is not an option. And I'm a little bit reluctant to create yet another hierarchy of Announcement class just for the purpose of signalling them. The classes I like to announce are commands anyway so they are already suited for transmission. So what are the options? Override Object>>#handles: ? thanks, Norbert
