[Pharo-project] Pharo/Squeak an iOS
by Steve Taylor July 13, 2011

July 13, 2011

First of all - I hope this isn't a bit off topic for this list. If it is, someone give me kick and I'll ask elsewhere... I've noticed some posts in the past showing Squeak or Pharo running on iPhones, but haven't paid close attention to them. Now I've gone and bought myself an iPad and all of a sudden I want nothing more than to write software for it using Smalltalk... Is there a feasible route for getting applications written in Smalltalk onto a *non-jailbroken* iPad? I'm well aware of Apple's restriction on allowing programmable systems onto the iPhone/iPad, but I'm looking more at writing some sort of simple game which just happens to have been written in Smalltalk and ultimately getting it into the AppStore. Any pointers to interesting information? regards, Steve

[Pharo-project] Socket objects created twice ?
by Sven Van Caekenberghe July 12, 2011

July 12, 2011

Hi All, I encountered something that I do not understand. I tried this in 1.2.2 and 1.4 with both my normal, older CogVM as well as the lastest one by Estaban. In a normal clean image, there would be not Socket instances. Socket allInstances size = 0 Now create any kind of Socket Socket new (or newTCP, newUDP) Now Socket allInstances size = 2 So Smalltalk reports two instances, but it seems they share the same socketHandle and semaphores, so one seems to be a shallow copy of the other. (Close the one instance, 3 timesRepeat: [ Smalltalk garbageCollect ] and they are both gone). Is this normal ? Is there really only one OS level socket ? Does this have to do with Sockets being in a WeakRegistry ? It is confusing to say the least. Sven

[Pharo-project] MorphicModel needs serious cleaning
by Igor Stasenko July 12, 2011

July 12, 2011

Just found that scrollbars are assigned 'slotname' when you creating them and when it comes to send events to their model, it end up in this method: use: cachedSelector orMakeModelSelectorFor: selectorBody in: selectorBlock | selector | model ifNil: [^ nil]. cachedSelector ifNil: ["Make up selector from slotname if any" selector := (slotName ifNil: [selectorBody] ifNotNil: [slotName , selectorBody]) asSymbol. (model class canUnderstand: selector) ifFalse: [(self confirm: 'Shall I compile a null response for' , Character cr asString , model class name , '>>' , selector) ifFalse: [self halt]. model class compile: (String streamContents: [:s | selector keywords doWithIndex: [:k :i | s nextPutAll: k , ' arg' , i printString]. s cr; nextPutAll: '"Automatically generated null response."'. s cr; nextPutAll: '"Add code below for appropriate behavior..."'.]) classified: 'input events' notifying: nil]] ifNotNil: [selector := cachedSelector]. ^ selectorBlock value: selector this is incredible.. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.
