Applications are invited for a PhD candidate at the Software Composition Group, University of Bern, Switzerland. The Software Composition Group carries out research in software analysis and programming language design and implementation, with a view to enabling software evolution. The SCG is led by Prof. Oscar Nierstrasz and is part of the Institute of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (IAM) at the University of Berne. Hello Laurent, Regarding Pharo Issue 4910, http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=4910 Did you see my reply ? Did you get any further ? I would really like to solve this problem. I have described it before, but here is what I think happens: - you start the ZnZincServerAdaptor, which implies creating a listener socket and process - you test it to see if it is running by doing one or more requests - this means that at least one connection and worker process are alive - you save the image - the server receives a shutdown and stops cleanly - since this is a ZnMultiThreadedServer and not the experimental ZnManagingMultiThreadedServer it leaves the connection and the worker process alone - you restart the image - the server receives a startup and starts working - the worker process is revived and will continue its blocking read for the next request - this signals a primitive failed and causes a hang/crash Now, using the lastest Zn, the primitive failed should be caught and the connection and worker should be cleaned up silently, unless there is also a VM problem, but I don't think so. (It would also be possible to make sure that no open connections are alive, close the browser that you used, check the Process Monitor) Another option is to use the experimental ZnManagingMultiThreadedServer which does track its own connections and cleans them up, which should result in the worker processes stopping cleanly. The next code requires the very latest Zinc-Seaside adaptor, you could try: ZnZincServerAdaptor new port: 8080; serverClass: ZnManagingMultiThreadedServer; start; yourself Regards, Sven

[Pharo-project] RFB looks terribly broken

Hi list, I'm not able to develop remotely using the RFB server anymore. The image just dies all the time. Examples of behaviours that trigger the crash: - Right-clicking on a Workspace - Saving a method in a Browser, then selecting another method in the same Browser Any ideas on why is this happening? The same exact image (with the RFB server also running and the same VM) works okay locally, but when I access it remotely it becomes unusable. Here's my config: 'Pharo1.3' (one click) 'Croquet Closure Cog VM [CoInterpreter VMMaker-oscog-IgorStasenko.123]' Debian 6.0 Cheers! -- Bernat Romagosa.

Hi, We should try to post something every week to the Pharo news blog. One interesting kind of content are projects done with Pharo. So if you have something to share: we would be interested in -> short text that describes the project -> URL to website -> a cool screenshot Especially interesting are of course for one commercial projects (Things like http://www.t3-platform.net) The other class I like are Research Projects. They are always fun and force us to think and dream. http://www.languageoflanguages.org is a nice example. Third: Infrastructure. [Pharo-project] Linus Torvaldsâs Lessons on Software Development Management

While I am waiting for enough time to devote to learning more Smalltalk/Squeak/Pharo, I came across this article [1] which reflected upon recent discussion on Fuel version format compatibility, as well as on other projects. Perhaps it is that it is such a great environment for experimenting with ideas that it encourages developers to do so, but it seems that functionality often becomes orphaned as the trunk progresses. I see some efforts provide a more professional platform, and understand that involves 'some' ripping/replacement of unmaintainable code, but which contradicts the philosophy of 'no regressions' mentioned in the article - which in practice I imagine a hard line to walk. Linux is the poster child of open source development success, and while it is more mature that Pharo such that the presented philosophy might not fit exactly, perhaps something can be learned. [Pharo-project] How to use freetype?

I feel a bit confused. I want to do something as easy as: font := Something fontByName: 'Arial'. but the problem is that i cannot find anything like that in freetype. There is FreeTypeFontProvider fontFor: aLogicalFont familyName: familyName but i puzzled, why it needs a logical font and why i should create it? Is there a general way to programmatically say: give me font 'Arial' pt size 9, or nil, if font cannot be found? -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko.
