[Pharo-project] Renaming methods in the debugger

While presenting "Revenge of the Debugger, feedback addicted" at Devnology tonight with Willem van den Ende, we noticed that it would be nice to be able to rename methods in the debugger. Is that something we missed in only using the old Pharo 2.0 debugger? :) Stephan

>We have so many cool mechanisms for in-image and external documentation now >that I sometimes get confused! The old "HelpSystem" that I wrote is in-image and was a first attempt on docu. It can be used, but these days I REALLY prefer that we switch to "PharoOnlineHelp" which is available in the config browser in Pharo 2.0. => just load it, start the server and open the browser (the "Browse" button in the panel currently only works on Windows but you can point your webbrowser to http://localhost:8080/) It uses Markup and you easily describe anything with it, also include pictures, videos and other resources. Markup is also readable even when not converted to HTML. After trying the demo just check class "PharoTutorial" especially methods #pharoTutorialOn: and #onlineHelpTutorialOn: that should give you an idea how easy it is to write documentation and tutorials. Both methods just use the pragma <onlineTutorial> and work with a builder (similar to the menu extensions). Simple - isnt it? The new online help is now also independent from any help framework classes (the subclassing on CustomHelp and its dependency was a problem for people like Lukas to write docu with the old HelpSystem). All this is solved in the new PharoOnlineHelp - IT JUST HAS TO BE USED. Maybe one can DEMO it on #pharoconf so it can be discussed. I would like to see in the near future: - people writing short tutorials using Markup with the <onlineTutorial> on their classes - a community hosted Pharo image at "http://help.pharo.org" with all these tutorials loaded so people can use their webbrowser to get more infos on all the nice packages and frameworks Any support welcomed! Regarding other docu efforts: ============================= Camillo also provides WebDoc - a more "reference" like help based on comments in the image. PharoOnlineHelp has this as well, see the API menu in the online help. I would like to see parts of WebDoc merged into the online help project. Camillo wanted to look into this AFAIK. So please: have a look, use it, report on it and help moving it forward Bye T.

We have so many cool mechanisms for in-image and external documentation now that I sometimes get confused! I considered a rant, but figured it'd be just as easy to write a plugin for Nautilus (thanks to Ben) ;) It gives you two buttons: - "Browse Tests", which becomes enabled when there are test methods in the image that reference the selected class - "Browse Help", which becomes enabled if there is a CustomHelp subclass in a category similar to the selected category (i.e. the package names match up to the first $-) Limitations: I hacked this together to scratch an itch, so I'm sure there are many. For instance: - it does not look in test helper methods, only #testSelectors. - I think I remember HelpSystem also allowing pragmas, so the logic may have to be extended It's a nice visual reminder that documentation may be available, with easily accessible links thereto. Gofer new repository: 'http://ss3.gemstone.com/ss/PharoSpd'; package: 'ConfigurationOfPharoSpd'; load. (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfPharoSpd) project bleedingEdge load: #('NautilusSpd'). Then enable DocumentationPlugin e.g. "Nautilus pluginClasses addLast: { DocumentationPlugin. #bottom }" p.s. if there is not a better way to programmatically enable a plugin, we should add that ;) p.p.s. if you load the 'IDE' group instead of 'NautilusSpd', you will get some unrelated but useful enhancements like Nautilus context menu items for adding boilerplate for new Spec UI's and adding custom attributes to Metacello configurations. Abstract The advent of Java and C# has been a major breakthrough in the adoption of some important object-oriented language characteristics. This breakthrough turned academic features like interfaces, garbage collection, and meta-programming into technologies generally accepted by industry. Nevertheless, the massive adoption of these languages now also gives rise to a growing awareness of their limitations. A number of reactions from industry testify this: invokedynamic bytecode instruction has been included in latest Java virtual machine release; the dynamic language runtime (DLR) is gaining popularity; C# adopted dynamic as a valid static type. Gartner prognoses further growth (http://blogs.gartner.com/mark_driver/2008/12/10) of dynamic languages. Researchers and practitioners struggle with static type systems, overly complex abstract grammars, simplistic concurrency mechanisms, limited reflection capabilities, and the absence of higher-order language constructs such as delegation, closures and continuations. Dynamic languages such as Ruby, Python, JavaScript and Lua are a step forward in addressing these problems while getting more and more popular. Making these languages mainstream requires practitioners to look back and pick mechanisms up in existing dynamic languages such as Lisp, Scheme, Smalltalk and Self. Practitioners also need to further explore discover new dynamic approaches in the context of new challenging fields such as pervasive computing. The goal of this workshop is to act as a forum where practitioners can discuss new advances in the design, implementation and application of dynamically typed languages that, sometimes radically, diverge from the statically typed class-based mainstream. Another objective is to discuss new as well as older "forgotten" languages and features in this context. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - programming language extensions - programming environment extensions - executing environments - static and dynamic analyses - optional type-checking - meta-object protocols - reserve engineering - domain-specific languages/tooling - testing environments - live programming !! Targeted audience The expected audience of this workshop is practitioners and researchers sharing the same interest in dynamically typed languages. Lua, Python, Ruby, Scheme and Smalltalk are gaining a significant popularity both in industry and academia. Nevertheless, each community has the tendency to only look at what it produces. Broadening the scope of each community is the goal of the workshop.
