Can someone explain to me the importance of Pharo's Balloon engine ? What it offers that Athens and Morphic dont already have ? In which scenarios its worth using ? Where I can find documentation about it ?

This issue was more of a discussion between Camillo and Sven. They never reached a conclusion, so please take a look. Iâve compiled the transcript below. Example: stream nextPutAll: #('ABC') asString could be written as stream printString: #('ABC'). This is a common extension of the following pattern: stream nextPutAll: #('ABC') printString could be written as stream print: #('ABC'). ============ Sven: And what about #print: as implemented by Transcripts and SocketStreams ? It is shorter. Feels more familiar. ============ Camillo: #print: is already implement and doesn't solve the stream nextPutAll: foo asString case. Since you cannot simply write stream print: foo, since you get quotes added for Strings. Ok, I admit that with decent design you can avoid this, since it should almost never happen that you have a String or a non string object in the same variable, right? ============ Sven: Yeah, that String issue is a bit annoying sometimes. Indeed there is Stream>>#print: already. But look: ThreadSafeTranscript>>#print: anObject self nextPutAll: anObject asString how about that ? There is also #<< whose implementation is even weirder, but it is handy. The question remain: when do you want to mix Strings and other objects as arguments ? ============ Camillo: - #<< is basically a lazy combination of #nextPut: and #nextPutAll: - #print: should call #printOn: on the initial argument, which for strings defaults to storeOn: which I think is wrong, but I would hardly stand a chance changing that :P So my global goal here is to avoid any kind of asString sends while pushing stuff on a stream. Sadly this happens more often than I thought :/ ============ Sven: Maybe this discussion should happen on the mailing list ? Changing String>>#printOn: might be hard, but #<< is much more recent, no ? Could it not be changed to do what you want ? Like Streamm>><< anObject self nextPutAll: anObject asString Another point is that #asString is not so efficient, since it creates throwaway Strings.

csv2html the Pharo version

Hi, Today I came across some bash code on a web page that loves Smalltalk, ah the horror ;-) http://car.mines-douai.fr/2014/09/csv2html/ The goal is to make it easier to look at CSV data, for which a conversion to HTML was done. To just look at CSV data in a nice tabular form, we do not have to leave Pharo at all. MultiColumnListModel new items: (FileLocator desktop / 'test.csv' readStreamDo: [ :in | (NeoCSVReader on: in) emptyFieldValue: ''; upToEnd ]); displayBlock: [ :x | x ]; title: 'CSV Data'; openWithSpec. Which results in this nice window: To do a conversion to HTML, debugging the code in Pharo should be preferable to doing the same with bash & sed (for most of us anyway). FileLocator desktop / 'csv.html' writeStreamDo: [ :out | | reader | out << '<html><head><title>CSV Data</title></head><body><table border=1>'. reader := NeoCSVReader on: (FileLocator desktop / 'test.csv') readStream. reader emptyFieldValue: ''. out << '<tr bgcolor=silver>'. reader readHeader do: [ :each | out << '<th>'; << each; << '</th>' ]. out << '</tr>'. reader do: [ :each | out << '<tr>'. each do: [ :td | out << '<td>'; << td; << '</td>' ]. out << '</table></body></html>'. reader close ]. Which gives the following output: NeoCSVReader is way more powerful in interpreting CSV files than a simple sed one-liner. Doing the same for a collection of files is easy. Maybe a little browser could even be written. Who knows, maybe Doru will add another tool to GT (TableViewer class>>#openStructuredOn: would do the trick I guess) ;-) Sven PS: The bash script was actually quite well written, even I could read/understand it. Thanks for sharing, it was the inspiration to do this little hack.

Copy class needs more information to do a good job At the moment, the copy class command only asks for the name of the new class. That is not enough information. There have been a number of issues posted about copying (or not) of the class comment, Issue 13247, 10039, 12294 and 12265. Other information that can be helpful is the package where the new class should be. I nearly never need a copy in the package where the original was. Spur: Fix bug in sweepToFollowForwardersForPigCompact which failed to update and answer lowest forwarder. Fixes numForwarders == 0 assert failures. Fix bug with become and class table not removing classes which become causes them to be unhashed. Fix bogus assert fail in synchronousSignal:. Refactor following code into ensureSemaphoreForwardedThroughContext: and fix the assert there-in. Use rawOverflowSlotsOf: in bytesInObject:. Make a little more progress on Spur image segment support. Provide a classTableEntriesDo: and use it to compute an arrayOfUnmarkedClasses. Cogit: Make sure voidImplicitReceiverCacheAt: sets codeModified if IRCs are inline. Make sure freeMethod: clears cmRefersToYoung Fix assert in cogitPostGCAction: that would fire erroneously in Spur become. Move evaluation of Cogit primitive desacriptor enabled function from initialization to just-in-time, and add enablers on SmallInteger primitives to ensure they are applied only to SmallInteger receivers (falling back to interpreter prims if not). Hence fix Cog for 4.1 (e.g. MuO) images. Back out of saneMethodClassAssociation assert in initialPCForHeader:method:. Newspeak falls foul of this.
