New Cog VMs available
by Eliot Miranda May 18, 2015

May 18, 2015

...at http://www.mirandabanda.org/files/Cog/VM/VM.r3349. I hope that the Squeak VMs here-in are final Spur 5.0 and Squeak 4.6 VMs. The last known serious bug in Spur has been found and fixed with these VMs. Of course uch hubris is asking for it. I await the wrath of the gods. CogVM binaries as per VMMaker.oscog-eem.1313/r3349 General: Make the bounds check in primitiveObject:perform:... more restrictive and fix bugs in the commentary. Make stack pages a reasonable size. My math was wrong and the size was half as big as intended. Extend the fastPrimTrace scheme to trace stack overflow, prim failure and prim retry to help debug the phantom stack frame bug in Cog Spur. Fix old bug in ceMNUFromPICMNUMethod:receiver: that has been masked by cacheing of MNU method in MNU PIC entries. ceMNUFromPICMNUMethod:receiver: must set up lkupClass before calling handleMNU:... Spur: Fix ceActivateFailingPrimitiveMethod: to return properly after retrying a primitive after checkForAndFollowForwardedPrimitiveState. e.g. fixes | s | 1 to: 5 do: [:i| s := 'bar'. s becomeForward: 'bzzt' copy. 'foo' <= s] Fix bug in followForwardedFrameContents:stackPointer: so that arguments are actually followed. N.B. drives the above bug underground ;-). so that named constants (defines) are not elided. Make accessor depth calculation more accurate by not considering fetchInteger:ofObject: and arraySize: et al as object accessors. Make the read-before-written initializer safer, only initialzing simple types. Newspeak: Remove landmine left from restructing implicit receiver and outer sends as clean sends. Plugins: Regenerated because of changes in accessorDepth calculation, constant elimination, and read-before-use initialization. -- best, Eliot

What are Parent Cases? What problem do they address? When should they be used?

Getting all classes referenced by a method
by Yuriy Tymchuk May 17, 2015

May 17, 2015

Hi, it want to rewrite the SmallLint rule which checks whether an abstract class is referenced. First question is whether the rule is really important, because sometimes there are abstract classes with some utility class methods, so maybe we should check whether they are âinstantiatedâ with #new or #basicNew. Now the real question is how do you get all classes referenced by a method. So instead of performing a rule check on a class, do it on a method and find if any of the accessed classes is abstract. [Ann] System monitoring for pharo images
by Norbert Hartl May 17, 2015

May 17, 2015

Finally I've found some time to release some of my code I've been using the last years. It is a project around system monitoring. It defines system parameters to watch and integrates them with popular tools like munin, monit and nagios/icinga/... As an example the following picture shows the monitoring of the vm memory over a day. System monitoring is basically about monitoring system parameters in order to send alerts when thresholds are exceeded or to plot graphs that enables one to estimate further progression of image behaviour. The code is here http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~NorbertHartl/Monitoring <http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~NorbertHartl/Monitoring> and an introduction article (more will follow) to it is here http://norbert.hartl.name/blog/2015/05/16/system-monitoring-for-pharo-image… <http://norbert.hartl.name/blog/2015/05/16/system-monitoring-for-pharo-image…> Feedback is welcomed! Hopy you enjoy it. And bug me if you have questions or something is not working. Norbert

New CogVMs available
by Eliot Miranda May 17, 2015

May 17, 2015

at http://www.mirandabanda.org/files/Cog/VM/VM.r3343. CogVM source as per VMMaker.oscog-eem.1303/r3343 Cogit: Fix the regression with #== in the StackToRegisterMappingCogit; a spilled constant must still be dropped from the stack. (fixes the width:color: MNU) Since the method zone does not scavenge PICs, the MNU method in an MNU PIC entry cannot be young. If it is, void the cache (load 0 instead of the method). -- best, Eliot
