Hi, In the latest Pharo #50125, I do this from the command line: ./pharo Pharo.image eval "SystemWindow allSubInstances" ==> an OrderedCollection(a RubFindReplaceDialogWindow(534511616) a GLMSystemWindow(58720256)) There are two strange things: - the GLMSystemWindow has a nil model, although if you inspect it, it visually looks like a Playground window (normal playgrounds have a GTPlayground instance as model). - the RubFindReplaceDialogWindow has findTextField as nil (while normally it should be some PluggableTextFieldMorph). Hi, How would you replace a piece of text in a file with another one and persist the change on disk? Right now, I have: file := 'path' asFileReference contents := file readStreamDo: #contents. newContents := contents copyReplaceAll: 'PATTERN' with: 'TARGET'. file ensureDelete; writeStreamDo: [ :s | s nextPutAll: newContents asString ] Any idea to make this more concise? the importance of your story

Hi, I gave last week a talk at NDC Oslo on "Don't demo facts. Demo stories!". While the talk is less technical, I did exemplified the message by demoing Spotter in comparison with the search support from Eclipse. There are several things I would like to emphasize. I compared our solution with an "industry standard" one. We often think our system as being niche and perhaps not mature enough. We need to change that perception about our work. We build state of the art. One thing that I did not mention explicitly in the talk is the size of the implementation. The Spotter implementation is 3500 lines of code -- and that it is so large because it currently comes with its own widgets. Furthermore, the extensions average 8 lines per custom processor (including the method header and the pragma). This is orders of magnitude smaller than what is typically out there, and it is precisely the reason why we can compete even if we are fewer. But, to get out there and compete we have to set that high goal for ourselves. For example, with GT we do not want to compete. We want to outcompete. So can you. While details are important, high goals require us to get away from those details. Only polishing details will tend to limit you to incremental improvements. We need to jump from time to time. But, these jumps are hard. On the one hand, it is hard to find the right jump and convince people to jump with you. On the other hand, they are hard to predict. For example, Spotter would have not been predictable one year ago. Yet, dry goals are not enough to keep us going. We need stories that make us dream. And the beauty is that Pharo breaths such a story. We should not limit ourselves to that story only. For example, with GT we want to reinvent the developer experience by making the developer be able to mold visual tools to her context because that is the only effective way to build sustainable systems. This little point of view will turn the IDE upside down, and this is only possible in a system like Pharo. Choose your high goal and tell its story through the system that you build. Detecting the context/producer of code change announcements

Hi everybody, I'm writing you to discuss about a new feature for Pharo. I would like to know your opinions and ideas. Thanks in advance. My point is that there are operations like "MC version load", "change set file in", "RB refactoring execution", or "class copy" that produce code change announcements (e.g. ClassAdded or MethodAdded), but subscribers can't know that. I mean, a subscriber that listens a ClassAdded can't know if it is product of a "high-level" operation, or if it was manually performed by the user in the Nautilus browser. I think Pharo should provide a way to detect this information, because it can be very useful. For example, I can tell you about a tool I work on: Epicea. Epicea logs code changes while developer works (like traditionally done with the .changes file), and the user can browse, undo and redo changes. Now, imagine that your vm crashed and then you want to recover "lost" changes... you don't want to see hundreds of changes produced by Monticello when loading packages: in this case, such changes are noise and make you waste time when selecting what to redo. In Epicea package I have a workaround for detecting some "high-level" operations, but Epicea would need support from Pharo for a nice implementation. Brainstorming on implementations. I think announcements are a good mechanism to implement this feature. A simple approach is to provide *begin* and *end* *announcements* (e.g. *MCVersionLoadBegin* and *MCVersionLoadEnd*). Then, somebody that subscribes to such announcements can have a stack or state machine to know the context where each code change announcement is produced. It would look like: MCVersionLoader >> load ... SystemAnnouncer uniqueInstance announce: (*MCVersionLoadBegin* versionName: ...). [ ... produce code changes ... ] *ensure:* [ SystemAnnouncer uniqueInstance announce: (*MCVersionLoadEnd* versionName: ...) ]. which may be re-written with a convenience method as: ... SystemAnnouncer uniqueInstance *announceBefore*: (MCVersionLoadBegin versionName: ...) *announceAfter*: (MCVersionLoadEnd versionName: ...) *do: *[ ... produce code changes ... ] but, going one step further, we could reify the concept of announcement *begin* and *end* like: ... *announcement := (MCVersionLoad versionName: ...).* SystemAnnouncer uniqueInstance announceBefore: (*AnnouncementBegin* of: announcement) announceAfter: (*AnnouncementEnd* of: announcement) do: [ ... produce code changes ... ] which could be re-written as: ... SystemAnnouncer uniqueInstance *announceBeforeAndAfter*: (MCVersionLoad versionName: ...) *do*: [ ... produce code changes ... ] I think any approach can work, but I'd love to have some feedback.
