Recommendation for password encryption?

Hi guys. Some time ago I asked about the best way to encrypt a password. Some of the recommendations I got was: 1) Generally for passwords you do not write a decrypt method for security purposes (eg you do not want people to be able to reverse engineer the encrypted password easily) 2) put a little salt 3) There is http://www.squeaksource.com/Cryptography/PasswordHashingFFI 4) I should not decrypt password but instead I should compare both encrypted versions to see if they are equal. My scenario is the following. I need to store database passwords in text files. So I don't want to let them as plain text. And while I understand 4), I think it's a different scenario than mine. I know that some database driver may allow you to directly send the encrypted password. But still...I have another similar scenario in which I have to store a password and then send it (unencrypted)...so I kind of really need a bi-directional encryption. Now..I would try to avoid having an external library + FFI. Any ideas what is the best thing I can do? And how could I solve 1) if I want bidirectional like in my case? Reacting to multi-selection changes in ListModel

Hi, maybe someone can help me out with this. Iâm working with ListModel that supports multiple selection and has autoDeselect turned off. Now Iâve tried to use #whenSelectionChanged: but it doesnât give any data, #whenMultiSelectionChanged: is not triggered at all, #whenSelectedItemChanged: works as for single selection list. Rubric mutability issue in RubTextComposer binary search

Hi, seems like there is a rather rare bug in Rubric. missing cairo library in CI

Hi all, not sure if this is best directed at pharo or CI mailing list... I've created a new job in pharo-contribution and my Pharo project uses Cairo library... however when CI ran the tests it failed on "Cannot locate cairo library. Please check if it installed on your system" ( https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/DynaCASE/2/PHARO=40,VERSION=deve… ) is it something I need to enable or disable somewhere? I'm pretty sure Athens also uses Cairo ( https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/Athens/) and it works just fine. Any pointers appreciated, Peter

Hi, I followed the recent discussion and initial code about "Pomodoro" and since (until now) I used a timer written in Java I thought it would be a good idea to replace it with a Smalltalk one ;) I grabbed the HOPomodoro code from Phil and since it was marked as "experiment" I thought it would be good to write a new clean implementation with tests for Pharo 2.0. Thanks Phil - hope you are not angry that I hijacked the idea ... Attached is a screenshot of the tool. Install ======= Go to the Config browser in Pharo 2.0 ("Tools" -> "Config Browser") and load "Pomodoro" from the "Verified" tab. A new timer should appear and you can just click on "Start" to run the timer. When it finished it turns red, beeps and informs the user. How to use ========== You can open a new pomodoro (defaults 25 minutes) from the world menu ("Tools" -> "Pomodoro"). Customize ========= You can customize the pomodoro using Smalltalk. Here are a few examples: "open a new 25 minute one" Pomodoro new open "Opens a new timer with one minute total time" Pomodoro timerFor: 1 minute "Provide an action when pomodoro is finished" Pomodoro timerFor: 5 seconds whenFinishedDo: [ self inform: 'Pomodoro finished'] Code ==== The project comes with 15 tests. Code lives on project "Pomodoro" on SmalltalkHub. So far I added Phil and Sean as contributors since they discussed this topic already and may provide new ideas. [ANN] Multiple Desktop support for Pharo 5

Julien Delplanque provided this week a goodie to switch between "desktops" - but his initial solution was more or less hiding windows and not really switching between real Pharo worlds/desktops. I gave him some tips what could be done on the pharo-user list. Havent heard from him afterwards. Now I was able to spend a few hours on this topic myself and implemented a full multiple desktop solution myself. This works in Pharo 5 only (currently) and requires latest VM (at least on Windows) from files.pharo.org to get the keyboard shortcuts right. To try: Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'TorstenBergmann' project: 'DesktopManager'; configuration; loadDevelopment. The goodie has some nice features like keyboard navigation, world menu integration and even a custom spotter with preview of the desktops. Quick start: =========== - evaluate the above expression in a Pharo 5 image - check the world menu "Desktop" - you can press CTRL + D and then CTRL + A (= Desktop Add) to add a new desktop - you can press CTRL + D and then CTRL + D (= Desktop Desktop) to open the overview - you can press CTRL + D and then CTRL + P (= Desktop Previous) to navigate to the previous desktop - you can press CTRL + D and then CTRL + N (= Desktop Next) to navigate to the next desktop The code is hopefully a good example on how to build a custom spotter, shortcuts, inspector extensions, ... Metacello load script won't update the configuration

Hi, when you use a script like Metacello new smalltalkhubUser: 'Pharo' project: 'MetaRepoForPharo40'; configuration: 'QualityAssistant'; load and you already have the configuration package loaded, the script is not updating the configuration itself. As the result you cannot update to a newer version. Is there a special expression that has to be used to update the configuration package? If not, maybe it does make sense to update the configuration before loading it? Cheers! Uko

Hey all! I have just added large file (chunkwise upload and download) support to Kom/Networking/Iliad in Pharo 1.4 and while testing it I tried uploading a 2.9Gb file. I haven't looked at the exact error message, and I haven't tried writing a trivial test - but the "half written" file on disk is almost EXACTLY 2Gb (2147483647) so I am wondering - do we still have a 2Gb file size limit? This is "one click 1.4" on Ubuntu 64 with ext4. regards, GÃ¶ran

Random access to meta repos?

For example, Dolphin Smalltalk runs this in 4 milliseconds: | stream | stream := WriteStream on: String new. stream nextPutAll: 'foo ^true and: '. 40 timesRepeat: [stream nextPutAll: '[true and: ']. stream nextPutAll: 'false'. 40 timesRepeat: [stream nextPut: $]]. (RBParser parseMethod: stream contents) formattedCode I'm guessing that Pharo wouldn't finish in a day... It takes over 4 seconds to format 16 nested blocks. The way I interpret the rule is that if I draw a rectangle around everything in the block including the brackets, it should not include any text of anything outside of the block. For example, this would fail that test: surroundedBy: aString ^ self class streamContents: [ :s | s nextPutAll: aString. s nextPutAll: self. s nextPutAll: aString ] yes Since the block starts at the end of the #streamContents: line, a rectangle around all the contents in the block contains part of the #streamContents: selector which isn't part of the block. I do not really like all the formattings of kent. Because sometimes it just does not work. But this is why we ask franck (an interns to start to have a look). For example I do not like self xxx ifTrue: [ self bla self foo. in the current default formatter. and I prefer self xxx ifTrue: [ self bla. self foo But here the problem is that the self foo is not tab aligned because ifTrue: [ self xxx ifTrue: [ self bla. self foo So may be this one is a nice compromise I think that we should change some settings. In fact in alpha things are there to evolve until the release :) *) If I fileout a package, it doesn't fileout the metaclass extension methods. The RPackage>>fileOut method needs to be updated with the metaclassExtensionSelectors. Oops this is a bug. Yes it sucks. We are in flux with the key essentially because the VM often does not even gives us the correct information. With the new OSWindow architecture we are putting in place we will have all the events and not just the one the VM does not eat (like shift pressed) and we can manage all at the image level not deep into arcane and old C- code. *) It appears that Pharo is removing subString: in favor of substring:. The ANSI standard defines subString:. I was not aware of it. In fact ANSI is bad and totally incomplete (for example we studies strings and this is a mess and totally incomplete). Now we should probably add it. I will send the mail to the mailing-list and let people decide. *) The ChunkFileFormatParser>>parseNextDeclaration is hard coded to handle only the Pharo format: | substrings | substrings := nextChunk parseLiterals. (substrings includes: 'methodsFor:') ifTrue: [ ^self parseMethodDeclarations: substrings ]. (substrings includes: 'commentStamp:') ifTrue: [ ^self parseCommentDeclaration: substrings ]. (substrings includes: 'reorganize') ifTrue: [ ^self parseClassOrganization: substrings ]. Due to the hard coded nature of the types of strings accepted, I have to overwrite this method to be able to file in Dolphin code. How practical it is to do set-based comparison in TestAsserter>>assertCollection:hasSameElements: ? For example #(1 1 2) has same elements as #(1 2) which may make sense for sets, but not for bags. The main reason I was using it is that in tests the expected collection may be created by hand, which means it is very often an array #(...), { ... }, while models very often return OrderedCollections (at least in my case). So my question is --- how to compare collections irrespective of type, and possibly of order? issue with large file path on windows

For those who had problems with pharo on windows and github based repositories, I built a windows vm with support for long paths: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8yEahnuIem2bmxwdzJuUXFxVGM/view?usp=shari… For browsing directories with large paths (FileList or Inspect), you may need one additional change in the image (But I am not really sure about that) : DiskStore>>initialize super initialize. maxFileNameLength := Smalltalk vm maxFilenameLength ifNil: [ 32767 ]. please test and give feedback. This wasn't as easy as I thought, and I had to make some more changes for the file permissions (the stat-functions don't work for files with long paths). Yet another Athens font thread

Hi I noticed that if I force use "Source Code Pro" as standard font for all elements in the image I never have problems with font rendering. In case of "Source Sans Pro" font is just not usable becasue of rendering bugs on mac, windows and linux(?). If "Lucida Sans Pro" is used - no bugs too. Because bug is reproducable on all platform - it's platform independent bug. Because it's reproducable only with one specific font - maybe it's not an athens issue but bug in font itself and if someone could change/update Source Sans Pro to a newly version or to a similar font the problem will be solved? I pushed some Aconcagua extensions to http://smalltalkhub.com/mc/SeanDeNigris/AconcaguaAddOns/main/ One part consists of tiny (so far) Aconcagua models of various domains - Time*, Money, and Weight at the moment. The other is the Aconcagua-Magritte package. This gives you MAMeasureDescription, which represents an Aconcagua Measure. It mostly acts like a number field mapped to its amount. You just have to tell it which unit to use to convert the amount number into a Measure. Example usage: MAMeasureDescription new accessor: #replacementPrice; label: 'Replacement Price'; unit: AmDollar new; yourself Then, you can type 100 in a Magritte form and "100 dollars" will be saved to the model. Hi All, thanks to hard work by Tim Rowledge and Lars Wasserman we now have a functional JIT for the ARM in the simulator. We're still probably some weeks away from a functional ARM JIT VM; issues like instruction cache flushing on real hardware can be tricky to solve. But we're at least ready to start trying to compile the JIT VM for ARM. Doug, see that I added a build directory for build.linux32ARM/squeak.cog.spur. Hopefully a fast VM for Raspberry Pi and Android is only a few weeks away. -- best, Eliot

Code completion in comment pane and Pillar

Hi, Some time ago I ran into a problem with typing left brackets into comment pane. As you know, code blocks in Pillar are marked with [[[ However comment pane is subject to regular code completion of NECController, which means that every time I type '[' NEC converts it into '[ ]'. So if I type '[[[' then I get '[ [ [ ] ] ]'. Which is good in code, but not here. Now considering we are pushing for Pillar in comments I think this should be resolved. However I don't know how. a) disable code completion for comments (trivial, but loosing CC b) subclass NECController to disable this. This is probably lot more complex, because the current one is hard-wired via Smalltalk tools c) add configuration option to NECControler so it can run in different modes (still a lot of work) d) add setting to options to disable/enable CC in comments and let users decide. d) other better, faster, easier solution? >From future perspective b) could be used to provide more extensive code completion, specifically for Pillar. 16666 CI validation Failure misreported as Success

Of the eight issues currently "Resolved (Fix Reviewed By monkey)" which passed validation successfully, three seem to actually be failures. That is, Fogbugz shows SUCCESS when the validation report shows FAILURE. * 16577 Random should be in its own package * 16634 Rename layout to classLayout (step 2 use new accessors in the tests) * 16645 RBParser should not accept # <whitespace> and # <number> So... Am I misinterpreting the validation reports? Until this is resolved, should we require validation reports be manually checked (with a comment on the Issue) before integration? [Reflectivity] Links on Literal Variables

Hi, Lots of progress on the Reflectivity projectâ¦ What is now working is this: 1) define a simple âHalt onceâ link: haltLink := MetaLink new metaObject: Halt; selector: #once. 2) install on the GlobalVariable that is referencing class Object: Object binding link: haltLink. 3) enable haltOnce in the system Menu â> next time the global variable âObjectâ is accessed, you get a halt. Keep in mind that lots of things are not yet workingâ¦ but every day some progress. trello board is here: https://trello.com/b/m5cxaAxB/reflectivity Next big issues to fix - #after and #instead for LiteralVariable - links on Slots and Temps - more tests - classes should be able to define which methods should use meta-recursing stopper - make "Object methods do: #createTwin. Filtering methods

Hi! I can now type in the method list pane. This is fantastic beginning. However it does not work properly. Can someone finish it? For example, once I started to filtering, I cannot use the keys to select a method. Frustrating.
