Spec wiring

Hi guys, I need a little help to understand how spec works. Iâve encountered a problem, that when all children nodes of a tree are checked, the parent node remains partially checked instead of going fully checked. Iâve tried to figure out how to work with that, but failed. Any suggestions? Uko

Future of Spec

Dear all, A few weeks ago, I read about the dispute on Spec, which has escalated, and as a result of that, Ben has left the Pharo/Smalltalk community. It's always sad when a long term member leaves, but live is going on. >From my (somewhat business minded) point of view one question is currently unanswered: Is there a future of Spec (without Ben)? I'm asking this because I'm the author of a web frontend engine which can be bound to a programming language (like Pharo) to create desktop-like web applications. Currently there is an implementation for the J programming language as well as a rough (but working) implementation for Pharo. My plans for the (far) future is to bind the frontend engine to Pharo in a more elegant way probably by extending Spec. So one may write a desktop application in Spec, and a corresponding web GUI is automatically created as well. So I'm currently a little unsure whether to go with Spec or going back to the good old Polymorph. Is somebody of the core team able to clarify the situation? Many thanks in advance. Martin

Board clarification around Spec

Hi, Due the recent known success, the board feels some clarification is needed. So, here it is: Spec is integral part of Pharo, and we will keep it as part of our distribution. Is our intention that community continues enhancing it, since like always, there is room for improvement. just that :) Esteban

Opal, custom compilers and class-side methods

Hi all, With Opal, if you want to customize how methods are compiled into a class you can override #compilerClass on class-side: MyClass class>>#compilerClass ^ MySpecialCompiler However this custom compiler is not taken into account when compiling methods on the class-side: MyClass class compilerClass ---> OpalCompiler I was expecting to have the same compiler class for the metaclass. The consequence is that right now there is no way to specialize how methods are compiled in *one* metaclass. Is it on purpose or is it a bug? Also is there cases where one wants instance-side methods and class-side methods to be compiled with different compiler classes? My rough guess is that in most cases you want the same compiler class, but I don't fell confortable forcing that. So I propose to add a method #classSideCompilerClass: Class>>#classSideCompilerClass ^ self compilerClass Then compilerClass can be implemented for metaclasses: Metaclass>>#compilerClass ^ self instanceSide classSideCompilerClass Likewise, if I override compilerClass, it is taken into account for both instance-side and class-side methods but I can still say that I want a different compiler for class-side methods by overriding classSideCompilerClass. Tell me what you think about it and if you're ok, I open a bug entry with the slice. Cheers, Camille

still getting vm bug...

Hi, I am still getting the vm bug mentioned here: https://pharo.fogbugz.com/default.asp?11130#103698 See screenshot: in my case, loading from filetree almost always throws the bug. I am using the latest Mac OS X pharo vm. If I change the method in the screenshot by extracting the assignment into a separate statement, the problem disappears. However, I can also still reproduce it reliably with Krisâ code snippet from the same issue thread: 1 to: 1000 do: [ :i | | string | Transcript show: 'Iteration '; show: i; cr. 1 timesRepeat: [ (string := String new: 1000 withAll: $a) reversed. ]. ]. (NOTE: Transcript must be open!) Reopen? Add a new report? Johan
