[Pharo-project] Process browser: next generation

Hello! We are currently working on a new process browser (codename: Loom). You have probably noticed that the Process Browser is not exactly the tool you want to use to understand how processes behave. The process browser may be one of the oldest piece of Pharo code that has not been touched for a long long time. We are going toward something that looks like the Activity Monitor (e.g., [*]), useful to find out which programs is heating up your laptop. We will have nice curves that shows you the CPU consumption. Something that the process browser has never been able to do. What are the features you would like to see in it? or it was like that from the birth?? arrrrgghhhh... | stream | stream := WriteStream on: (ByteArray new: 100). UTF8TextConverter new nextPut: (Character value: 129 ) toStream: stream. stream contents #[129] This is WRONG! RTFM, about utf8 encoding, please! :) --------- nextPut: aCharacter toStream: aStream | leadingChar nBytes mask shift ucs2code | aStream isBinary ifTrue: [^aCharacter storeBinaryOn: aStream]. in my case, stream is binary, so it goes directly to #storeBinaryOn: storeBinaryOn: aStream "Store the receiver on a binary (file) stream" value < 256 ifTrue:[aStream basicNextPut: value] ifFalse:[aStream nextInt32Put: value]. This is not even close to UTF8. If character code is less than 256, it will store a single byte (wtf?), and if more than that, it will store 32-bit integer value in big-endian order (wtf raisedToPower: 2).. i wonder , for what purpose we actually having this code path? this stuff is completely useless. according to implementation of storeBinaryOn: there's no way how you can read the same character value back. because it can be 1 byte or 4 bytes.. but you simply cannot determine which one. this is one of the reasons we using utf8 encoding, btw ;) -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko.

Hi all! I'm currently working in a project related with ROS (robot operative system), which already have a library to develop in C++ and other to do the same at Python. So, there a lot of variables to contrast to make a choice (performance, code-easy-to-prototype, flexibility, and a lot more), but the main variable is the accessibility from Pharo, then the question is, is there any project that use python from pharo? Or, if i select python i should write a library in C that bootstrap python and give access to pharo via FFI? I looked in the list's mails and in google without any success. Thanks in advance! This is gold for the Pharo dev community. I encourage you to bring this feedback to the dev list, or â even better â create issues, or (best option) take on a few so we can integrate them!! A few comments/questions: * multiple selection in 1.4 â consider the browser in 1.4 to be legacy. Nautilus will be the future browser in Pharo, and it will have multiple selection * accessor creation â will you describe what steps you took (e.g. manual creation, context menu (there are two possiblities here), etc)? If you illustrate your ideal behavior, I will create an issue and push to include it in Nautilusâ¦ * Settings â I find this one *really* interesting. Will you highlight the key differences to VA? Maybe we can improve the framework in Pharo, or at minimum create a UI that makes things simpler and more straightforward for you Re Nautilus: it is not production-ready, which is why it was not included in Pharo 1.4, but it is under heavy development by a great developer, Benjamin VanRyseghem. He is very open to this type of feedback. Specifically, I couldnât agree more about the buttons!!!
