Hell guys, I am looking for people to translate Dr. Geo in national languages. Kids need the interface in their native language to use it. Already we have French, Spanish (need some review), German, Chinese, Korean, Russan, Italian,... But we miss many translation in European languages: Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Portuguese, Gaelic,... . Greek will be great as DrGeo is related to Euclidean geometry! Japan is also missing! >From the excellent blog http://playingwithobjects.wordpress.com/ Guille was doing we read The results of the project so far are: * It can create an Smalltalk image living inside another image. * This inner/guest image can be written in a new .image file. * With this approach a small kernel of 1.1MB has been reached. * SpaceTally runs and prints reports to understand how the space is distributed among objects. * A tool to detect every uninitialized class variable/class instance variable and references to unexistant globals was developed. [Pharo-project] Next step in cleaning DataStream

So, so far we have removed SmartRefStream, deprecated ReferenceStream and integrated Fuel. The ONLY remaining user for DataStream is Monticello. We do not want to replace that yet because Fuel may still change the format and we do not want to break monticello versions. But, my question is now...should we clean DataStream and assume its only usage will be the definitions of Monticello? becuase I true, I think we may be able to remove DiskProxy and all its users, togethet with lots of methods like #objectForDataStream: what do you think? -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

[Pharo-project] ClassBoxes... bitrotted, or usable?

I mused with a colleague about how I'd like to see "lexically scoped monkey patching", and he pointed me to some guys that want to add that to Ruby (http://timelessrepo.com/refinements-in-ruby) Note the inspiration for their work: ClassBoxes! (http://scg.unibe.ch/research/classboxes) I remember reading the paper years ago, and started working through it again now. Something that's not clear to me is this: does ClassBoxes require VM-side changes? (Because it changes the method lookup, after all, searching packages for methods before working up the inheritance tree.) If so, how invasive are they? If not, do we have a ball-park estimate of how much work it would be to update ClassBoxes to a more recent Squeak/Pharo? I'm more than happy to do the dogwork. I'd just like to know whether I'm signing up for months of work or not. Thanks! frank

Hi All! Im adding an announcer in my project, 'cause, in order to build a call graph, ill need to know about inferencer-stack movements. I was thinking, the meaning of it is to create an announcement object with it configuration for any push or pop of a stack that's similar to the runtime stack, these are a lots lots lots of objects proably with lesser optimization than BlockClosure. I was thinking in add extension methods that allow me something like self announce: [ StackPush new ] ifAnyIsInteresetedIn: StackPush. Well, i have two questions: a) Am i right? b) subscriptions variable at SubscriptionRegistry is an OrderedCollection, but is commonly accessed to get the subscriptors related with some concrete type, why not a Dictionary? is not faster than an OrderCollection in the tipical case of use? Ok, it could complicate calls like 'remove: subscriptor' but, commonly if you have the subscriptor, you have the Announcement type. Maybe the common ammount of subscriptors in a announcer is too little? Thanks!

Dear Smalltalkers, We apologize for multiple reception of this announcement. The International Workshop on Smalltalk Technologies, is a European Smalltalk User Group (ESUG) Conference joint event, that focuses on research activities - namely academic creative work undertaken on smalltalk use, and more generally on object technologies. IWST was launched in 2009, in Brest, during the 17th ESUG Conference. The second edition took place in Barcelona, and the third edition was held in 2011 at the heart of historic Edinburgh. Next edition will be in Gent, Begium this summer (28th of august). ESUG gathers groups of professionals and hobbyists who share an interest in the Smalltalk programming languages and related technologies. The goal of the workshop is to create a forum around advances or experience in Smalltalk. IWST contributes to triggering discussions and exchanges of ideas. As always, we make a point to have a very constructive paper review process that aims to provide in-depth comments and suggestions to all of them (no one-liners!) This makes it ideal to disseminate new research directions, and is a good venue for early stage PhD students to receive feedback on their work. In addition, we intent to invite best papers to a journal special issue as we did last year. Looking forward to your submissions, and to meeting you in Gent!
