[Pharo-project] FileSystem. Possible FSReference rename

Hello, I hear many people does not like name FSReference in FileSystem package. Me too. Its not clear to me. But it is main object for end user. Maybe we can rename it to FSLocation? I frequently name variables that point to some file/dir like imagesLocation, settingsLocation and others. Therefore it is natural to me have FSLocation instead FSReference. What do you think?

Hi guys. We are developing Fuel with Martin Dias. Fuel is a binary serializer similar to Parcels. More info in http://rmod.lille.inria.fr/web/pier/software/Fuel For the moment, we are using the "classic" streams we want to give it a try to XStreams. My knowledge on streams is very little, so if someone can give me a hint I would really appreciate it. What I want to do right now is an adaptor of XStreams to classic stream. I mean, I want to create custom subclasses of XTFileWriteStream and XTFileReadStream that implements the same API from classic streams that we use in Fuel. And the implementations of such methods will do just a "self something" where something is the way of doing that in XStreams. So, the following is the protocol we use in Fuel for streams, and what I would love to know is the associated way to do it it XStreams. after having a look with ben at the current refactoring implementation in Nautilus we found that the "Extract into temporary" refactoring is most of the time not that useful. I wonder wether it would make sense to loosen the requirements on conserving behavior... consider the following example where we extract "self foo" into the temporary "tmp": =========================================== foo ^ self foo even ifTrue: [ self foo * 2 ] ifFalse: [ self foo / 2 ] actual result ============================= foo | tmp | tmp := self foo. ^ tmp even ifTrue: [ self foo * 2 ] ifFalse: [ self foo / 2 ] proposed result =========================== foo | tmp | tmp := self foo. ^ tmp even ifTrue: [ tmp * 2 ] ifFalse: [ tmp / 2 ] =========================================== note that the proposed solution is not side-effect free. However the given refactoring hardly makes ever sense, since this action can be easily done manually in less time. given that you first have to find the proper menu-item. best cami

I have started my first project with Pharo (and hopefully Squeak too) called "Ephestos" .Â http://www.squeaksource.com/ephestos.html Ephestos is divided into 3 areas/ elements / concepts : a) Morpheas b) Proteas c) Orpheas Morpheas is an effort to bring Morphic to OpenGL and to implement 3d guis , that can be designed in blender ( probably will implement a addon exporter too from blender to Pharo) and deployed in Pharo , minimising coding and maximising ease of use, since a 3d gui can be fairly complex to program.Â The reason why I am posting here is for your help. I am very new to Pharo and smalltalk and Ephestos is an extremely ambitious project which I hope to be commited for at least the next 5-6 years which I plan to release version 1.Â My first rule is of course , because the project is already very ambitious, "code reuse". I want to be informed what efforts there have been towards that direction .Â Mr Stef published recently a great PDF document Â titled "Pharo's Vision : Goals , Processes and Development effort" in it there is the following quote about Morphic "What have been done so far. Igor Stasenko did the following: â¢ Designed and implemented a new canvas API and all the necessary abstractions to generate adequate code for different backends. â¢ Deep integration to be able to inject frames into existing VMstructure (Igor can you confirmthis?) â¢ Designed and implemented a new textMorph, paragraph and other classes. â¢ Defined a default back-end. â¢ Defined a Cairo back-end. â¢ Defined an openGL back-end (using an OpenGL calling framework).Â " So I guess my question should be directed towards Igor, but maybe someone else also works in this. I am interested in any information about Morphic and OpenGL . I am also interested even on partial support of graphics engine like Irrlicht , Ogre and Open Cobalt. My main focuse is Nativeboost cause it appear to have a new enhance FFI, and of course the possibility of inline Assembly code. Â Has anyone , advice , suggestions , ideas and hopefully some documentation I can use Â ?Â I am already studying both OpenGL and Nativeboost / NBOpenGL .Â

I've been just going through "Computer Programming with GNU Smalltalk" book using Pharo 1.0 as an actual ST implementation. The book mentions "stdin nextLine" as a way to get an input from a user via the standard input. Is there a similar class/method in Pharo?

Hi: While stepping through bytecodes, I noticed a slightly annoying inefficiency in the SUnit implementation. The description string in #assert:equals: is always computed, even if it is not necessary. While that might not be a performance problem, I find it rather distracting when I have to debug on the bytecode/VM level. Since there seem to be only 127 senders or so in the image, you will probably not notice a big performance gain. The change to compute the string only when necessary is below.
