Under one of the old Squeak VMs it compiles but depending on the VM version, has issues maintaining a sane state. So this is most certainly a VM issue and not a bug in the image side code. [Pharo-project] Dumb question: Cog and CPU temp??

Hello all, I am clobbering my cherished laptop today. I have it scanning the entire image for references and senders, but have been surprised that the fan has not started. The fan could have died, but the machine does not seem to be unusually warm. In the past, tasks like these always caused it to warm up and turn on its fan. Could Cog be the differnce???? Bill

Hello all, I'm working on my re-underscoring of GSL. It's been a lot of work, but I really believe it will pay off in the future in terms of being able more easily find methods of interest because with underscores, they look like the things one might find in the manual. It was *really* important with PLplot which has names that are surprisingly cryptic to start. Back to GSL, I wanted a list of methods that contain the "old" structure prefix (SGsl - not sure why I chose that...), are not in a category of old items, and are not simply in the old stucts (#fields, accessors). The following seems to do the job: | nav suspects | nav := SystemNavigation new. suspects := nav allMethodsWithSourceString:'SGsl' matchCase:true. suspects := suspects reject:[ :each | each category = 'public-old' or:[ each classSymbol beginsWith:'SGsl' ] ]. nav browseMessageList:suspects name: 'Methods referencing old GSL structs' autoSelect:'SGsl'. Description : Nautilus is a new browser based on the latests system meta model tools like RPackage or Ring. The goal is to ensure this browser has the stability and all the features required to become the next standard browser. Technical Details : Nautilus may be improved on different levels: fixing last bugs, improve the way the UI widget are defined to be able to easily change the UI representation, create some plugins for metrics, better traits integration, better icons. Morphic may have to be improved Benefits to the Student : The student will learn and use the latests infrastructure tools, the different Morphic's layers. He will also participate to a tool which is used and will be. Benefits to the Community : The community will gain a more stable and up to date default browser. Project name : Hazelnut Level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) : Advanced Possible Mentor : Stephane Ducasse ? Description : Hazelnut is part of the Seed project which goal is to bootstrap the system. Technical Details : Ensure the validity of the created kernel and also improved the serialization mechanism. The goal is to clarify and ensure a creation mechanism which can be applied to a dynamically generated kernel or to a statically describe kernel as well. Benefits to the Student : Deep understanding of the system layouts, of the kernel definition, of the meta model and the reflexivity of the system. The student will also learn the object format and the basic of the VM use. Benefits to the Community : The community will gain a way to bootstrap a new fresh kernel from an existing image or from a kernel description. [Pharo-project] Polymorph

Just a heads up. I'll be making some time next week for reintegrating various fixes and improvements to mostly Polymorph related things. Whilst based on 1.4, it has been some time since I've updated my happily stable image and the changes have accumulated to be fairly extensive, all driven by business needs of course ;-) (no reason that nice stuff can be done in that remit!). The changes will hopefully not break anyone's parallel efforts, likely, though is going to be painful to resynchronise as the community has been doing plentiful excellent work in improvement. I humbly ask that fixes/changes to Morphic/Polymorph could be put on hold in terms of submissions whilst I integrate as a stable baseline will be necessary. I'll post again on the list next week as to when I start on the reintegration so I can hopefully get a clear few days of stability, along with letting you all know preliminary details of the effects of changes (won't know full repurcussions until analysed). In addition to fixes etc. I can make available a couple of UI themes suitable for touchscreen devices (Android Gingerbread style basically, in HDPI and MDPI) and a few other goodies. Hi, I just noticed when I load a project with a metacello configuration, all the method's timestamps are lost. I tried with this configuration: Gofer it > squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; > package: 'ConfigurationOfCTranslator'; > load. > (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfCTranslator) load. If then I load the project by hand (i.e. going through the Monticello browser), the timestamps are back. Also, when I add a new method to a class it gets added without a timestamp, just after I modify it the timestamp is added correctly. This is strange since it recommends to use the very same method. I could not find the method I should instead use. Does this method really has to be deprecated? I have to admit that I am a fan of the general "beyond ASCII" idea of which one sees a tiny gimpse of a shadow in Squeak... but the way it was done in Squeak was never really good enough and people did not use it at all. (Partly because both Morphic and it's text model as well as the UI never was any good...). E.g. the first thing you want in comments is embedding Figures (e.g. of Datastructures)... or even life working examples.
