[Pharo-project] [ANN] Amber Smalltalk 0.9.1 is out!

About 4 moons have passed and Amber - the Smalltalk for the web - has during that time moved forward quite a lot. Since the 0.9 release back in september we have made about 250 commits and closed 52 issues of about 75 reported during these months. Now with over 43 forks on github and more than 230 followers the project: http://www.amber-lang.net ...is live and kicking! A lot of cool stuff is being done in those forks and not in the master repository, like for example the gaming framework called Ludus by Bernat Romagosa: https://github.com/bromagosa/amber/tree/ludus ...or Ambrhino by Stefan Krecher - Amber running in Rhino: https://github.com/StefanKrecher/Ambrhino So, why would you take a look at Amber? In our opinion Amber is perfectly positioned for the HTML5 onslaught and the explosion of all-things-javascript like for example Nodejs. Amber plays very well with others and can seamlessly use Javascript libraries! It's a *real* Smalltalk, the environment is all there including Workspace, Transcript, Browser, senders/implementors/references to class, TestRunner, Inspectors, code editing with syntax coloring and a Debugger. There is no image or interpreter, all compilation is incremental. JavaScript is quite a broken language with lots of traps and odd quirks. It is the assembler of the Internet and we love it for that, but we don't want to write applications in it. Smalltalk is immensely cleaner, both syntactically and semantically with a simple class model and a lightweight syntax for closures. It is in many ways a perfect match for the Good Parts of JavaScript. And having a true live interactive incremental development environment where you can build your application directly in the browser is unbeatable... There are cases when PluggableListMorph has is inner list cache in nil: *getListElementSelector: aSymbol "specify a selector that can be used to obtain a single element in the underlying list" getListElementSelector := aSymbol. list := nil. "this cache will not be updated if getListElementSelector has been specified, so go ahead and remove it"* ... But, there are some methods that send messages to that nil list and blow up :D, such as: *backgroundColorFor: aRow | anItem return | aRow ifNil: [ ^nil ]. anItem := list at: aRow ifAbsent: [ ^ nil ]. ... * Now, two solutions comes to my mind: put one more ward in: *backgroundColorFor: aRow | anItem return | (aRow isNil or: [ list isNil ]) ifTrue: [ ^nil ]. anItem := list at: aRow ifAbsent: [ ^ nil ]. ... * Or use #getList, which seems to be the most... cleaner. *backgroundColorFor: aRow | anItem return | aRow ifNil: [ ^nil ]. anItem := self getList at: aRow ifAbsent: [ ^ nil ]. ... * ? While working on Coral we encountered a rather annoying behavior of pharo images when starting up. We wanted to check if we can debug the CoralScriptLoader, but of corse since this happens at image startup time this is not a good ideaâ¦ HOWEVER we were no longer able to run the image as it immediately crashes during the startup. Now I wonder if it would make sense to add a couple of on:do: in SmalltalkImage >> snapshot:anQuit: to collect the errors of all the startup scripts and then only show them after all other startupListItems are processed. All in all the behavior would not much differ from what is going on right now, but would prevent stupid users like me from losing a whole image. camillo

Hi: When refactoring code, I frequently try to find all places where a class is instantiated. Is there anything in the image which would work a bit more precise than a search for the class name in the finder? [Pharo-project] executing a script in headless mode?

Hi, I'm trying to execute a simple script in headless mode in order to setup some basic settings but it seems not to work right now. I've used this idea a lot to build my images. Do i have to install some package?? Hi, I think I found bug in pharo image. I would post it in bug tracker but I don't know if it is not duplicate to this bug http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=3349&can=1&q=ConnectionQueu…. If you create ConnectionQueue to listen to some port, send it message "getConnectionOrNil" and there IS connection, debuger pops out with "MessageNotUnderstood True>>isConnected". I searched through code and obviously it is problem in ConnectionQueue>>listenLoop, that sends bad message to socket (Socket>>waitForConnection:), that returns true or false, not connection itself. It is works in squeak image. Should I post it to bugtracker? Or am I wrong? And isn't it duplicate to that link? Thanks, Jan

Hi people, I was trying to measure coverage of my code and I realized the method *TestCase class>>packageNamesUnderTest* belogs to a category called **sunitgui*, *shouldn't it belong to coverage category?* I was about opening an issue for this, but I wanted to check it first because maybe there is a reason I don't understand.
