I am just porting squeak/Etoys to Samsung-PAD and i noticed some strange things: In Pharo 1.1 network connections seemed to be limited to 4 connections: In the listenLoop backlogSize is set to 4. Means - Pharo is limited to max. of four simultaneous TCP Connections? But: Some MacIntel VM seem to run Squeak with additional worker thread for event processing. Maybe this limitation may not occur here? Carbon ports of Pharo use ioPeekKeystroke, ioGetKeystroke, ioMousePoint, ioGetButtonState instead of kEventRawKeyModifiersChanged and kEventMouseMoved event Found in Pharo so far: isDraggingEvent isDropEvent isEditEvent isKbdEvent isMorphicEvent isNoteEvent isTempoEvent isWindowEvent Hmmm ... quite a lot of events being polled: Need additional: isOnMouseOverEvent isMouseGestureEvent isTouchGestureEvent isNetworkEvent isUSBEvent isSerialEvent isParallelPortEvents isCtrl-C-Event ... I fear, that this costs a lot of wasted VM Power by polling. UNIX, especially Linux is changing towards a event machine, driven by interrupts. So - Interpreters should also migrated from polling to interrupt driven event-machines. I am missing that in Pharo. Pharo still has too much polling code/algorithm running, that slows down Pharo/Squeak/Etoys ... unneccessarily. Any ideas appreciated ... tnx, regards Guido Stepken

What's the status of Alien in the new Cog VM? I was able to load Alien into Pharo 1.1.1 running Cog, and some simple callouts worked (e.g. `CRLibrary libraryVersionString` in CairoGraphics. But every callout with arguments failed in primFFICallResult:. Alien works perfectly for me in Pharo 1.1 using JMM's VMs when I load the Pharo 1.1 version from ConfigurationOfAlien, but I admit I haven't tried 1.1.1 in this arrangement. Is there something that's changed in Cog's Alien primitive implementation? -- Ken Treis Miriam Technologies, Inc.

[Pharo-project] Why Sets need to be rehashed when loading them from an ImageSegment?

Hi. I was almost sure that Set instances that were written in an ImageSegment, needed to be rehashed once they are swap in. And I even thought I was understanding why. But now, I don't understand at all why is that. I would really appreciate anyway that can give me a hint. So...ImageSegment rehashes all Set instances (at loading time) that were written in an ImageSegment, and then exported with ReferenceStream. Notice that this rehash is finally called from ImageSegment >> comeFullyUpOnReload: smartRefStream. When you export an ImageSegment with a reference stream, you also serializer the "outPointers" array. This is usually the case when you want to load the object subgraph in another image or when do it backups so that to start with a clean image. Notice that the Set rehash only occurs in this case. If we use ImageSegment just to swap out / in, there is no Set rehash. So...I think that this has something to do about WHY Set instances need to be rehashed. For each object ImageSegment write into the file, it writes both: object header + slots. So....the hash (12 bits in the object header) is copied. When the object is loaded back, it continues to have the same hash. It doesn't change. So...if hash doesn't change, why Set instances need to be rehashes when they come back from an ImageSegment? [Pharo-project] Pharo/Seaside UI testing

I have to say, I am loving the Pharo/Seaside development environment. Manually testing TFLogin (a basic login and user account management package for Seaside) using Firefox was taking longer and longer as added features multiplied the number of cases to be tested. I had unit tests for the underlying pieces; testing the callbacks on the rendered pages was where most of my time was being spent. Yesterday I loaded WebClient and Soup from Squeaksource and together they made it possible for me to script tests of the TFLogin Web UI without needing a browser. This even includes verifying confirmation email callbacks. I've constructed web apps in other environments (e.g. LAMP, ASP) and never had this level of automated testing. Its surely not impossible in other development environments, but somehow it never happened. I've been thinking about why in the Pharo/Seaside environment this seemed so natural and I've come up with these reasons: 1. It required no extra infrastructure or products to set up the test environment. Seaside's server, the WebClient clients, Soup, and the TFLogin test app are all present in the Pharo image. 2. No shell scripts or Perl or Python code was necessary. 3. The tests cases are integrated into the development environment, and are not in another tool or language. Regards, TF

Hi! Apparently, the 1.2 image contains only the size 7, 9 and 12 for Bitmap DejaVu Sans. Can we get additional font sizes? Are there a vectorial font police supported in Pharo? I would like to be able to give any arbitrary font size. When I set the list font to Bitmap DejaVu Sans bold 12 and try to open an inspector, I get an error. I can't reproduce it in 1.2, but didn't find an issue for it.
